I was getting the -4 error as well, just keep trying and sooner or later your iphone will hook up with the server (mine did and is almost fully restored right now, which takes fooorever)

I arrived at 5AM at the East Madison AT&T store. I was number 9 (number 1 arrived at 3AM). It appears I could've arrived at about 6AM and would've still been in the top 20. By 8AM there were over 70 people waiting.

They had 11 computers/registers set up. They took the first 11 people in line at exactly 8AM. I was finished at 8:38AM - the iTunes servers were hanging right from the start. My activation was not complete when they told me I was ready to go -- I had no data access at all. That came about 5 minutes later.

I don't know if the guy was joking, but after the first 15 or so people went through, they said they only had 3 of the 16GB black ones left.

Restoring my contacts, etc. was only a minor nightmare. About 15 minutes of shifting focus from the iPhone and the associated -9838 error to the Library and back again got the sync completed. Now I'm syncing again to add music, photos, etc.

So far a cleaner experience than many have reported. I'm sure saying that will be my kiss of death.

listen apple does things for a reason, the dropped mobile me yesterday so they could relaunch it when the time was right....meaning the iphone situation was cleared. They have always had problems with servers, like when they first released the beta for the iphone, the site crashed each time.

they underestimate the number of people who are going to be trying to download this stuff......remember its apple, they do things for a reason. have there been any reported problems with the software??? i think not. so dont blame then with the issues. they do things for a reason. Now your service issue...thats all ATT. nothing to do with apple.

Work for Apple much? How is Apple's inability to predict the number of people who would be trying to access THEIR iTunes store to download the software update NOT Apple's fault? They know EXACTLY how many 1st gen iPhones are out there and they know EXACTLY how many 3G phones could potentially be out there. Assume 1 connection for every single one of those phones first thing this morning and be ready for it - to be prepared for anything less is just negligent and has NOTHING to do with AT&T. This is Apple trying to monopolize the news cycle with a giant event again - otherwise they could have rolled out the software update to existing users yesterday and avoided this whole problem.

This is an enormous problem for Apple. THey've spent months building the hype for this update - primarily among existing users - and plastering "JULY 11th!!!" all over everything they can get their hands on, and then can't deliver? If this were any other company this would be disasterous. But as usual, everyone will forgive them because the product we'll all get (EVENTUALLY) will still be amazing...

the unplug and replug isn't necessary. just quit itunes and then keep opening it so it will recognize your touch each time. that's what i did with my iphone and it worked

whats supposed to happen? I get the update notice. i click it and i know the itunes app store is down for the updates....but i had some weird box come up, saying it was connecting....but nothing happened.

Apple has done this for a reason, huh? So they are intentionally incompetent? Wow, that really makes me want to buy their products...

If they have server problems time after time, that's THEIR problem and they are responsible for it. Apple is completely to blame for this--period. If they have insufficient servers, then they need to beef up their system. This isn't rocket science, people.

And this is not an issue of "underestimating" anything--Apple seldom underestimates things, and this is the 2nd iPhone launch and what Steve was quoted as calling "the biggest launch of my career." They knew this would be huge, and they dropped the ball. Period. They are 100% to blame and should be ashamed of themselves, and will not only get a LOT of bad press from this but will likely loose some buisness, as well they should.

These problems are not intentional, that would be rediculous.

I would have to disagree. Although nobody will see this post, i would like to bring up an important fact. Although AT&T was using iTunes, they were using their servers. Their servers failed so they went to Apple. Apple was anticipating that this was gonna happen, but not on this kind of scale.

My Gen 1 iPhone is up and running 2.0. I just came home at lunch to see how the update went this morning and luckily I didn't have a brick waiting for me.

However I did start my update prior to 8:30 this morning. So I guess still be warned.

iTunes 7.7 with iPhone 3G 16gb
At first itunes was giving me the could not connect error. Now it says it's accessing the server and then I get a timed out error after only 30 seconds. Anybody else getting this? Any way to change the time out time limit?

I stopped at the Columbia, Maryland Apple store at 10:45am and they still had 75 people in line. I asked someone who was just leaving the store with his phone and he said he had been there since 5am and was on of the first in line. It was taking over 2 hours to activate. I asked one of the Apple people to see if they would be open late, but he wasn't sure. He did say they had plenty on hand and expected another shipment today.

So all the AT&T locations selling the iPhone in my area sold out shortly after they opened (there is no Apple Store in Dayton, OH).

They said they are NOT TAKING ORDERS--contrary to what MacRumors states in this article!

Huh, then your AT&T store sucks. The one I went to here in NJ were taking orders for 16GB black after they had run out.

They also said they have "no idea" when more phones are coming in, how many will come in, etc.

AT&T for some reason want to make their employees extremely tight-lipped. The employees at the one I was at this morning wouldn't even tell us how many they had received. They just took a look at the line and said they had "enough".

I also completely fail to grasp why :apple: doesn't ship more iPhones to stores (or why the stores don't order more, if that's the problem). The store I went to had 20 this morning. Give me a break! Even if they were stuck with 500 iPhones that didn't sell this morning, they KNOW those will sell within the month at the very least. I just don't get this. And please tell me that :apple: isn't pulling a Wii here, because the result isn't "buzz" it's frustration.

Being an Apple product it's not surprising that they keep the bulk of the stock at their own brand stores. As for how AT&T distributes their allotment, obviously they have their internal sales figures for how the first iPhone sales went so I'm guessing they'll send more to the stores that have sold more historically.

Updated & Activated

I updated my iPhone 2G to 2.0 about an hour ago, and after about an hour of trying, it is now activated! It is syncing my music now. Can't wait to try it out!

So, looks like things are improving!

Kind of - my old iPhone that I'm putting on another line is very very slowly making it through the process but now has gotten hung up on verifying the .mac account with the Apple servers. My new (white ) iPhone 3G periodically starts connecting to the store but then keeps getting the -4 error message - it hasn't even gotten to the first step of clicking to start the process which only took the old phone about 15-20 minutes to get to.

Some of us were only trying to update our existing phones and had no idea this would happen. I didn't even think that I'd have to re-activate the thing.

For me and others like me, it's not impatience. Many of us are stuck without a phone with zero information as to when it might work again.

That sucks and it's not our fault. If a software company posts an update, the update ought to work. At the very least, they should give a warning or offer a way to back out of it if it doesn't. There are people I need to call and I can't call because this update that Apple released bricked my phone. You can't defend that.

Ted

People bitch and piss and moan at Apple and AT&T being unprepared... but read this... why in the world if all this stuff is so important, would you even try to do something that's not proven and true... Maybe you should have been prepared yourself and had a backup plan before you go bashing AT&T and Apple for your own impatience.

iPhone 3G Woes

I just got the white iPhone 3G and cannot get it to work with iTunes.
Keep getting an -4 error message.
It took 45 minutes for the Apple Store at Aspen Grove, CO to activate the first person in line. This is going to be a huge black-eye for Apple and AT&T. I am still trying to get it to sync and both my original iPhone and my new one are completely dead. Not good. :(

No i partly agree with what your saying. Yes they know how many people have a 1st Gen phone, they do potentially know how many 2nd Gen Phones they will be seilling, but they dnt take account for the ipod touch users who are trying access the store, all the people who are curious to see whats new in the 7.7 itunes. The product has been out for release, yesterday, they spotted it, you were just unable to activate. ATT was not ready for it!

IMO, in regards to getting people waiting in line the new iPhone 3G that they've been waiting for, iTunes isn't an issue.

The line at the Norfolk, VA Apple store wasn't moving because because AT&Ts servers were down, not because iTunes was running slow.

When iTunes was having problems activating in-store, Apple employees there were told to let the process run for 2 minutes, and if it still hadn't activated, to let the customer leave with their new iPhone 3G (to be activated at home, later). It didn't stop sales.

When AT&T's servers went down, the Apple employees were unable to complete the sale. The whole process had stopped as of 11:30AM. There were about 40 employees in the store doing pretty much nothing. No sales.

Good to see some light at the end of the tunnel!

Most disappointing day ever...

I think it is fair to say that AT&T is the worst thing that ever happened to Apple and that the tail is truly wagging the dog.

After waiting three hours to get an iPhone 3G, I just had to give up. As a current iPhone owner, based on my previous experience, I was just truly annoyed with having to wait and wait and wait because the activation server was not working.

Let alone the gas to get to the store, and then this. What a waste of time. I mean, these plans are expensive! I'll convert eventually, but I have lost some respect and admiration for Apple.

What an awful day,
Adam
:(:(:(:(

I'm sure that's true, but it doesn't explain the fact that almost EVERY STORE is sold out already. That's just sad. Targeting a "sold out" status near the end of the day is ideal (that generates buzz) but sold out after a couple hours is retarded and simple makes people angry.

anyone recall that interview with the CEO of AT&T this past week? Think it was in the NY Times. "We are fully prepared for Friday........"

RIM must be so happy right now! The story just hit Yahoo! News and CNN.

Apple really screwed the pooch on this one. Let's watch the stock begin it's decline...

I may have a bricked phone, but they're going to have a lot of really ticked off shareholders!
:D

Now people will associated iPhone with "software problems". RIM couldn't afford this kind of marketing!
