Time is all they need....

what about ipod touch users? Could the same things, the unplug, re-plug thing end up working?

Apple sure has everyone by the b***s. Same problems as last time, the phone ultimately costs more with the new AT&T plan and still everyone lines up.

Really amazing.

BTW - I own a ton of apple computers and other products so I'm not trashing the company.

the unplug and replug isn't necessary. just quit itunes and then keep opening it so it will recognize your touch each time. that's what i did with my iphone and it worked

First the -9838 error, now I'm getting -4. I know that I'm minus a phone right now, that I was shut out of the 3G this morning (ATT store in Indy got 30 phones, no 16 gig units), that Mobile Me is still a mess, and that this is the first time I can remember Apple really, really screwing something up quite so bad. Problems, yes, I expect and understand, but doing all this at once just seems so unbelievably dumb that I didn't understand it yesterday and understand it less today.

I'm going to stop waiting and just hope that by this afternoon it's back up. If not, well ...

listen apple does things for a reason, the dropped mobile me yesterday so they could relaunch it when the time was right....meaning the iphone situation was cleared. They have always had problems with servers, like when they first released the beta for the iphone, the site crashed each time.

they underestimate the number of people who are going to be trying to download this stuff......remember its apple, they do things for a reason. have there been any reported problems with the software??? i think not. so dont blame then with the issues. they do things for a reason. Now your service issue...thats all ATT. nothing to do with apple.

ah, well, still can't activate after trying for a long time. It's the price early adopters pay, I guess.

For those who bricked their iPhones trying to upgrade to 2.0, did you try restoring from backup? My friend did and it worked fine for him so now he's back to the old iPhone OS but at least it works.

and how do you do that if your phone is stuck on the "connect to iTunes" screen!?

Apple Store Ridgedale here... their still doing activations in-store despite all the problems plaguing activation recently.

In Japan, everything went smoothly. Typical local style:
- I was given a ticket in the morning with a specific time in the afteroon for buying the phone
- the activation took 80 min (they like to explain everything in details 3 times and Japanese love paperwork, so you have so sign numerous forms)
- they didn't open the box in the store. I was given the iPhone and a SIM card to be inserted in the phone
- back home the activation went well, it was only a matter of seconds before my iPhone was functional
- I followed the link for Mobile Me tryout and it seems to be working already even if the main page says the service will come soon.
Good lord, you call that "smooth"? 80 minutes?

Pop sim out. Go to target and by a cheapo GMS phone (15 bucks). Use it until your iPhone works and complete transactions normally. No need to panic.

You're saying this would work by taking the sim out of the iPhone 3G and using it in another device?

Somehow i dont see it being that simple.

CONTRADICTION with article!

So all the AT&T locations selling the iPhone in my area sold out shortly after they opened (there is no Apple Store in Dayton, OH).

They said they are NOT TAKING ORDERS--contrary to what MacRumors states in this article!

They also said they have "no idea" when more phones are coming in, how many will come in, etc.

Basically, they were completely unhelpful and lacked the common courtesy of an "I'm sorry but..." prior to any of those statements.

Come one AT&T, even if you make your employees get up a little bit early for 1 day a year you still need to make sure that they provide polite and satisfactory customer care!

Pathetic.

I also completely fail to grasp why :apple: doesn't ship more iPhones to stores (or why the stores don't order more, if that's the problem). The store I went to had 20 this morning. Give me a break! Even if they were stuck with 500 iPhones that didn't sell this morning, they KNOW those will sell within the month at the very least. I just don't get this. And please tell me that :apple: isn't pulling a Wii here, because the result isn't "buzz" it's frustration.

That doesn't work when people are desperately trying to get ahold of you from OVERSEAS on a SHIP and the only number they have is you iPHONE number!

lol, epic post. once u switch ur sim card to the new phone, the number goes over as well, the beauty of GSM

iphone activation

I have been trying to activate my phone all morning. Finally my phone is currently retoring from back up. I think it is going to activate when done. I'm keeping my fingers crossed. While it is in sync, my phone currently displays "Activation Alert - No signal detected. Signal is required to complete activation." I hope this will be solved once the restore is complete. Ugh!

Denied

I waited over 4 hours at my local AT&T store and came up empty handed. I was there at 4:45 am and was number 20 in line. The guy in front of me got the last black 16 GB which is what I wanted. I didn't want to settle for white so I did "Direct Fulfillment" and should hopefully have mine in a week of less.

Apple Store in Cincinnati

The news at 12 just said that there were over 300 people in line at the apple store in kenwood Cincinnati at 12 PM The store opened at 8 AM.

I am glad i didn't go today:apple:

I'm totally screwed at the moment.

First, I was 57th in line at my local AT&T store this AM....and they were sold out at 50! WTF??!!! They offered the opportunity to wait in line and sign up for delivery on Monday... BUT I'm going overseas tomorrow morning and now won't be able to get a 3G for two freaking months! Can't believe that the store only got 50 frigging phones!!!!

NOW... I went to update my 1st Gen iPhone to 2.0 which went well UNTIL the end when I am now getting the same errors as others. My phone is stuck on EMERGENCY CALL only when sliding the button... AND I need my phone NOW for my final flight reservations, and at the same time, my company is trying to reach me on the phone from Asia, and can't! This SUCKS!!!

If they don't fix it by tomorrow morning, I will be completely without cell phone while traveling, and that is simply UNACCEPTABLE!

Apple looks like Microsoft this AM!:mad::mad:

People bitch and piss and moan at Apple and AT&T being unprepared... but read this... why in the world if all this stuff is so important, would you even try to do something that's not proven and true... Maybe you should have been prepared yourself and had a backup plan before you go bashing AT&T and Apple for your own impatience.

Apple Store Biltmore Phoenix, AZ

I went to the Apple store last night around 10pm, the security guards said no one on campus (or in parking lot) until 6am.

I went two blocks down the Brand New AT&T Store and was first with my buddy around mid-night. AT&T gave us a folding camping chair with umbrella attachment (first 20 peeps or so), AT&T shirt, Dunkin Doughnuts, Coffee, Water. Much better experience and very organized and calm. Very quick.

Waiting to unbrick at home. AT&T store only got 70 and they were a huge corporate store for AT&T. Sold out (based on people in line). Went back by the Biltmore store and there were probably 200 peeps in line. Good luck everyone.

Sorry really weird just happened

So I had my bricked 3G iPhone plugged in and have been trying to activate using iTunes 7.7 and I just received a text message on the new iPhone from AT&T saying "Welcome to AT&T"

The "Slide for Emergency" disappeared and I was able to "Slide to Unlock" and it took me to the iPhone's homescreen. I'm able to access all iPhone stuff on the actual iPhone, including getting on the new app store, but the iPhone is still not connecting to iTunes to "activate."

What the hell just happened?

I mean, this is a good start, but I haven't "set anything up" really via iTunes.

itunes doesn't show anything but the phone works! just kept trying (30 mins at the Boylston St store and an hour at home) and now the phone shows AT&T 3G and i can receive calls. itunes still spinning though...

They DEFINITELY knew that everyone was going to try and do this immediately, this is EXACTLY what happened last time. And with Wii. And with 360. And with PS3. And with PSP. This is the nature of these releases, they sell out asap, period. And for something that has to get activated as opposed to just plugged in, everyone will try to do it immediately as they have in the past and always will in the future. Especially when it's a bunch of enthusiasts waiting in line for a release, they'll be the ones out of all the customers to try and sync/use/update as many features as possible as soon as possible.

Fiasco

This was a fiasco. Against my better judgement, I went to one of the many At&t stores in my area. It was 7:45, and there were about 200 people already in line. The line started moving about 10 minutes later. Everything was looking good. The sales staff was chipper, and they were advertising their Jawbone headset/case/car charger package deal. The system went down for about 45 minutes, around the time that Central was opening their stores. Two and a half hours of standing in the sun later... They announced that they were OUT.

They said that we can go in and preorder, and that we would get priority as soon as more came in. About 10 or 15 more people came out with phones. I figured the announcement may have been a fluke. I waited 45 more minutes, until I got toward the front and could talk to the rep guarding the door. Apparently, we did not get priority, at least not for another 7-10 business days. All of the shipments coming in were going towards new sales. Well, I sucked it up, and finally got into the a/c cooled room. Talked to the rep. The rep inside ran my number, and said that I had a past-due bill of $305. Okay.. that was a surprise, considering i had just made a payment two weeks ago. Apparently their in-store system hadn't updated payment info until then. He recommended to make the payment and then call customer service, I assume to get a credit back. I thought about it, and once again asked what the payment amount and breakdown was. All of a sudden, the payment went up to $385. That was the last straw. Not only are they taking away 4 hours of my life, but they are hustling me for money to pay for the subsidy.

I no longer have ANY interest in the 3g iPhone, and am seriously considering closing down the rest of my AT&T lines. The sad thing is, there are alot of these stories popping up in the forums.

That's ok! Looks like I'll just be going back to Blackberry later this fall!

Apple has done this for a reason, huh? So they are intentionally incompetent? Wow, that really makes me want to buy their products...

If they have server problems time after time, that's THEIR problem and they are responsible for it. Apple is completely to blame for this--period. If they have insufficient servers, then they need to beef up their system. This isn't rocket science, people.

And this is not an issue of "underestimating" anything--Apple seldom underestimates things, and this is the 2nd iPhone launch and what Steve was quoted as calling "the biggest launch of my career." They knew this would be huge, and they dropped the ball. Period. They are 100% to blame and should be ashamed of themselves, and will not only get a LOT of bad press from this but will likely loose some buisness, as well they should.

These problems are not intentional, that would be rediculous.
