Firstly, it is spelled Gene "When is the Apple flatscreen coming out?" Munster.

Secondly, this is part of the cycle. It has happened in every generation of the Mac since the original iMac. This effect is already built into every reasonable analyst projection of Apple's performance. In short, non-news.

The fact that they are about to unveil a new Mac Pro, and just last year did a redesign on their Macbook Pro and iMac lines leads me to think they still do care about Mac's.

They just need to update quicker.

Especially with Broadwell supposedly having a shorter lifespan than usual, Apple cannot really wait several months before updating to it, because by that time Skylake will be right around the corner.

i'm fine with the mainstream shifting to ipads. it means they can go back to making laptops into the "trucks" that us demanding users want, without any worry of alienating the broader audience.

Very much agree with the first part, but "hey are still tied to Intel and being dragged behind the times by that company." So who is ahead of Intel?

No one... yet. Apple should break from them, or they should adjust architecture, or they should be dealing and negotiating for Intel to have some dedicated chips being done for Apple on a timely basis.

What Apple might be best doing is cutting away and designing and making their own processors again.

Whatever the option or best path, it is clear this path is hurting them while they could be working a path toward maintaining and broadening their ancient, pro-customer base. The benefit of catering to high-end professional markets is that the development for those computers hones and benefits efforts later used for the pleb tech.

more often. We are waiting for the mac mini to update to Haswell. Seems to me they could have done this when they updated the iMacs. My circle has been changing to mini's as the low end imac is tough to justify with the lack of user upgradability in terms of HD and memory. I think they are losing sales because of this as well. :(

That'll be easy for Apple, they will just prevent the mini from being upgradeable in the next model. ;)

I think the Ax chip will take care of that in the near future :)

Most Macs are technically 'outdated' and the MBP/MBPr price-points are very steep at the moment.

Update the hardware. And turn the Pro prices down a notch. Or two.

Off-topic: The day Apple discontinues the hires MacBook Pro (15" 1680x1050 - not retina) will be a very sad day for me — I'm totally addicted to the hires resolution and would prefer it any day over retina.

In regards to making their own chips, Apple is certainly heading down that road. Look at their mobile chips, each year they are starting to be more and more Apple designed. I could see a future where their Tablet SOC's are powerful enough to drive a 13" Macbook.

The problem then would be moving away from x86 and all the issues regarding existing Mac software.

I know a lot of people who have been waiting since the Airs were refreshed in June.
That's a long time to wait for a MacBook Pro computer.

Apple shot themselves in the foot when they teased the public with Haswell and the updated PCIE Flash Storage.

Let's face it, for work, most people use the computer provided by their employer's IT department. For the most part, these are windows machines updated on a frequency determined by company policy. So when people on this forum talk about doing real work on a computer, they need to realize that most of that is done on corporate issued windows machines. Macs are a very small portion of the "doing real work" market. Don't get me wrong....I am fortunate to have a Mac at work and love it......but, this is the exception in most corporations.

For home use, people just don't need to update their computers nearly as frequently as the past because they are doing most of their day to day computing on smartphones and tablets. You don't need a full desktop computer to answer email, browse the web, organize photos, listen to music, write simple documents, track finances......the list goes on and on.

I just can't believe that sales of previous years model that costs the same as the next years model are dropping. It just doesn't make sense. It's like these people know that Apple is going to update their products and are waiting for the new one before buying.

Why would it be difficult? They had OSX running on x86 chips, years before it was made known about the switch to Intel.

You seriously think Apple haven't kept a few boxes with other chips going, running versions of OSX? Given the speeds and number of cores per chip, wouldn't be shocked if Apple still had OSX capable of running on Power Chips.

As for running on Arm, that is probably a thought, but would guess it'll be a fair few year down the road.

I predict the prices of the new Mac Pro will make even the wealthiest people's eyes water.

It really feels like Apple should move to more often updates on their Mac line. It used to be that only Mac diehards followed the cycle, but it sure seems that the general population is watching it now.

Why bother. Most people are using tablets or are buying on price. Updates cost a lot of money for Apple and are not worth it unless their sales go up considerably.

I want to say college students will shift towards the iPad, but then again, I feel like it's too light for a college student.

So what does Apple have .001% of the OS market? Developers are going to be dropping by flies.

Count the days before the Mac is dead.

iOS is a LOCKED toy.
OS X is much, much, much better UNLOCKED computer. Get in control. Get a Mac.
Now, Apple should make a truly light (400 to 600 g) and pocketable Mac.

This is merely an observation but I don't know anyone who owns an ipad that doesn't ALSO own a computer/laptop. Of course the ipad is going to eat into cyclical buyers pockets but can one really conclude that the incarnation of ipad/tablet = death of the PC? As much as I use my ipad, there are always times when a computer is more useful and necessary. I just don't buy that the ipad is going to kill off the PC.

I for one have not but a Mac yet because they haven't been updated, not because I use my ipad more.

Updated machines:
MacBook Air updated in June.
iMac updated late last month.

Still waiting:
Retina MacBook Pro
MacBook Pro
Mac Mini
Mac Pro

No **** there is a sales slump.
