And what's the difference? The second glacier moves at twice the speed of the first one?

Whenever I see Kbps, it signals that the transfer speeds are so slow that the manufacturer doesn't want to casual users to know the truth.

So divide by 8 to get to KB, then calculate sppeds per minute. With error checking, I calculate the Belkin Media reader comes out to about 1.5 MB / minute, while the Camera Link (on PC) might end up at 5 MB / minute.

So even simple 1 GB compact flash card, ont he fastest option, will take about 3 hours. Do you expect a pro photographer with 2-4 GB of daily downloads to spend an entire night with this garbage? Even an amateur with a 512 MB card upload will almost 2 hours ...

I agree these transfer speeds are unacceptably and painfully slow. Just thought I'd point out there are options, however mediocre. Hopefully Belkin and others are working on more satisfactory solutions.

Your last edit was misleading - USB uses MBps (Megabytes per second), while the Belkin uses Kbps (KiloBITS per second). So you have to divide the Belkin by 8 to get real speeds (which I'd assume are transfer speeds, not allowing for error checking.)

I pulled my numbers from the usb.org website. They state 1.5 Mb/s and 12Mb/s for slower speed USB and 480 Mb/s for higher speed. It's not my fault if they have Mb (Megabits) and MB (Megabytes) confused. But I don't think they have. They mean Megabits.

Photo what?

There is nothing glorious about the photo iPod. It's more expensive than the original 1st Gen 5GB iPod. It falls out of better technology for the same price that Apple seems to stick to. If you want 60 GB you have to get the photo iPod. Why can't you get a monochrome iPod with 60 GB? Not that I care. I've no intention of buying a colour photo iPod. Though if I were to buy a BMW and the latest most powerful one only came in an automatic rather than manual, I would look for another car.

Not everyone wants all the bells and whistles. Be it a car or an iPod. But some people demand performance without leather and wood trim. Personally I think colour ruins the iPod. I've no use for it.

U2 iPod. Very cool. Music and very U2esque feel. Improved battery life, also very cool. FOR MUSIC. If you want a Palm, Newton or PDA-phone, get one. If you want a portable video player, get a portable DVD player with a decent screen for less money, get one. Don't make something great into everything else. How about an iPod that makes toast, coffee and checks your oil automatically before you take off in the morning? How about an iPod that handles legal proceedings? How about an iPod that designs what type of iPod you think and iPod should be. Photo iPod, move in the wrong direction.

Oops, sorry CalfCanuck, didn't see your previous edit before replying. At least we agree it's too friggin' slow, especially for pro-photographers!

But an photo iPod seems useless.

useless to you -- as a digital photographer who can easily fill up 1 gig Compact Flash cards on a shoot i think this is awesome --- the belkin card reader solution was great with my iPod, but the ability to connect the pictures to a TV, or simply review them on screen to make sure you go it, is awesome

While the iPod Photo looks very nice, I can't see it being that useful until they add the ability to directly import from a digital camera. That would let you take tons of pictures at maximum resolution without having to buy some huge flash card for the camera. The day thats available is the day I'd consider spending $500 on one. Till then I'm sticking with my "boring" 15GB 3G iPod. :p

You'd think they would've just waited to release the 4G iPods......

So are these '5G iPods' now?

The great thing about this is that they are seperating the iPod lineup. This is not the 5G....it's the iPod Photo. They are keeping an iPod that is dedicated to music....those are the 4G's. There are 4 in the lineup now:
iPod (4G)
iPod Mini
iPod Photo (hopefully they will enable video output after Tiger and it's better video encoding abilities are released)
iPod Special Edition (hopefully these will continue with other bands/artists)
-hopefully they will add a 5th to this lineup with a flash iPod for under $150

Greatest day Apple has ever given to true iPod fans...whether you're a 1G owner or a 4G owner......a true iPod fan should happy about any kind of advancement and evolution.

I wish I was a U2 fan.......or might even make myself a U2 fan before I get to Hong Kong to buy one...........but the color iPod is not possible to ignore...but its thickness is getting to me......they they should be making things smaller...I mean the extra 3 hours battery life isn't gonna change much.....they should've just left the size...it was already thick as it was....

I knew those rumours where true. And how they really were....except disappointments in size increase and no 20GB release....

These are not thick at all.....remember the 1G & 2G iPods? They are making iPods smaller....the minis:)

The photos stored on the iPod are not the photos stored in iPhoto

Maybe the ones it display are thumbnails. But the iPod Photo page also states "Copy full-resolution photos to iPod Photo as a backup or to transfer originals to another system".

Ummm.... I love the new iPod Photo, and I might get one, but you can't see photos on it (on the screen or on a TV) unless you first upload them to a Mac (or PC), process them, then download the large thumbnails. Of course, you can still use the 'pod for storage.

Of course, you can do this with any iPod.

Remember the 'Hidden functionality' crap in the G4 iPods?

itunes 4.7 doesn't deliver any of this, I wonder if any thing ever will?

No doubt ( I suspected this all a long) that the 'hidden functionality' was a ruse to get people to buy it.

iPod Photo.. I think its excellent addition and a natural one at that given the iApps. If Apple had implemented a card reader people would be moaning about the extra cost and / or that their chosen media format isn't supported.

The hidden functionality was in the processor, not the iPod itself. The same processor is used in the iPod Photo as the iPod, and mini. This processor allowed for photo viewing, which the iPod Photo does.

I think in the future the iPod Photo will be dropped. I'd say look for a proPod (think mini iMac G5) that will show video and such, that's once they get the battery life up and the design down. I don't doubt that Apple is working on a video Pod, just not in an iPod form factor.

Cool - I hadn't read it in-depth and had assumed that it just kept the thumbnails up to date. Nice feature!

Yeah, I wish that image of the iPod Preferences in iTunes was larger so you could more easily see that "Include full-resolution photos" option.

New iTunes Windows Preferences

The new options to "Keep Mini Player on top of all other windows" and to "Minimize iTunes window to system tray" are great. I don't use the mini player much, but I really like the ability to minimize to the system tray. I've wanted this feature for a while now. Since I need to have iTunes running for my girlfriend to access my music library on her machine or to use AirTunes, it's nice to leave it running all the time and not have it taking up valuable taskbar space.

CNN Headline News had several minutes devoted to Apple today at about 4pm.
First they talked about the U2 iPod.
Next they talked about the iTunes Music Store expanding into other countries and soon into Canada.
Last they talked about the iPod Photo.

Kind of neat to see so much time dedicated to Apple....and to see the stories switch b/t the 2 anchors.

Another downside from todays news would appear that we Australians who actually might have wanted to buy a U2 iPod, get to pay the premium price but miss out on the benefit of the (US$50 equiv) iTMS voucher to offset the purchase of the U2 'Complete' album. That seems very unreasonable to me and Apple should reduce the price of the U2 iPod in 'Tuneless' nations to recognise this fact. Apple should expect this product to BOMB in Australia because I guess many U2 fans like myself will baulk at paying a premium price for this iPod, knowing that we are not getting a fair deal in comparison to the Tuned-up nations.

But the 'hidden functionality' doesn't do anything for the 4G owners.. Apple gave this impression that in the future their 4G iPods would offer more functionality. really it doesn't, its for iPod Photo.

Dirty Buggas!

I was just watching the keynote and U2 started to sing one of their new songs from their upcoming album, and then it jumped to steve jobs and bono hugging! I guess they're worried people will record the audio from the stream and spread the song, haha
