a bit pricy

Is it just me, or does anyone else think its a little bit overpriced? The 4G 40GB iPod is $399. The 40GB Photo iPod is $499. I don't know. I'm just tired of spending a lot of money. I just bought my PowerMac in June and I'm trying to pay that off. How much longer will we wait for the sub $200 iPod's? I guess I'll keep right on using my 30GB 3G iPod and use my iBook to show photos.

Its not only you - $599 (add tax and shipment) for 60 GB, a color screen and the option to watch photos...? Maybe some people need it urgently, I can see the geeg factor and it sure is nice and points to an interesting direction for future developments, but I think it is way too expensive (for me anyways) - what about a cheaper iPod below $200, lets say in the $150 margin with 10 GB? I have an old 10 GB 2d generation iPod and still 5 GB free - and use my PB to see all the photos.

But the 'hidden functionality' doesn't do anything for the 4G owners.. Apple gave this impression that in the future their 4G iPods would offer more functionality. really it doesn't, its for iPod Photo.

If you bought a 4th gen just because some magazine mentions hidden features, then you and everyone else is a sucker.

I didn't, my 2g is fine.. but the photo is extremely tempting.

Teach those g4 owners to be cutting edge, doesn't it! ;-)

U2 iPod Black&Red . . . Red Hot Chili Peppers Black&Blue

Anyone given thought to the fact that this iPod idea leaves room for many color options on the click wheel? Perhaps there will be a Red Hot Chili Peppers model (Black & Blue), a Michael Jackson model (Black&White), a Madonna model (Black&Pink), a Black&Green model (Greenday), I could go on forever. I think this is the approach Apple is going to use to keep these special edition iPods comin'. It allows them to sell a 40GB over and over again, (like they already do), but just sound new everytime.

this may have been previously posted, and i apologize if it was, but did anyone notice this new feature? it's what i've always wanted mini player to be! i can just keep it down there and not have to open itunes just to change the track or volume! best of all it's not distracting! this is one of the very very few times i'm glad to be a windows user :p

This has been available for Mac OS X users since the Begining! :p

how crappy that they cut the song off so early but then left all that time at the end just watching people file out of the room. fair enough, they didn't want us to rip it off but there were other instruments on the stage too so i guess they played more than just the one song, they could have let us see at least a little more.

in any case, i wish steve would get a white clicker

For the 40GB price I'd rather have the Dell Axim X50v Handheld. The color iPod does look very very very nice though. I'll buy it anyways because it is the latest and greatest.

Aha! So that's why they were there. Was wondering about that myself.

Hahahah.... was thinking the same thing myself. Cobalt blue is so... last year :)

I think before they come out with an iPod Video, they will need an iVideo program like IPhoto and Itunes. Don't care for the U2 edition that much, but the photo pod looks sweet.

Irony

I like the black iPod with red click wheel, it's a pretty striking contrast to your average iPod. But what's up with only offering it in a 20 gig version? Strange choice. I guess if you were going to buy this U2 "digital boxed set" anyway, spending the extra $50 on the U2 iPod is no sweat, since you'll effectively get it back. Bottom line is it's kind of neat visually but limited (and I don't like the fact that they didn't include losslessly-compressed versions of the album). I wonder how the lawyers feel about this: they certainly have no argument now about not shipping music on physical media in regards to the Apple Corp lawsuit...interesting.

Has no-one noticed the irony of Apple launching a black iPod in honour of Ireland's most famous rock band, yet managing to exclude Ireland from the new Euro territories that may access iTMS?

Yes, we've noticed. There's already a few posts about this injustice.

Damn. That is pretty ironic. Guess licensing works in mysterious ways.

(Oh man. Even I'm cringing. :D)

No direct transfer of photos from Digital Camera?

At first I was excited about this photo iPod, but after looking through the specs, it seems there is no direct way to transfer the photos from my digital camera (or memory cards) into this photo iPod. I still need the Belkin media reader or my laptop to transfer the photos, is it true?

I do a lot of location shooting and I was wondering if there is a faster way to transfer the photos, instead of carrying my laptop around. The Belkin media reader is much to slow for the job. And this photo iPod doesn't seem to solve the problem

Watch the Quicktime Stream of the Music Event.

Steve talks about how some people think the next big thing is Music + Video. Says its wrong cause the devices are too big and heavy with too small screens. Also, very few people have enough video content that they want to take around(except mac users with iMovie of course). Movie and TV shows would have to negotiate for licenses and stuff.

He then plays a clip from "Raiders of the Lost Ark" with Indy and Sallah saying "They're digging in the wrong place"!

Apple believes the next big thing is Music + Photos because most people have digital cameras or cell phone digital cameras. There's no licensing restrictions or copyright issues, and it's easier to build into a small product.

The $64,000 question then is, Do enough people want to carry all of their photos with them wherever they go and show others? I don't know, of course I thought no sane person would pay extra to take 640x480 pictures on a cell phone. So, time will tell.

btw, iPod Photo isn't made for professional photographers it's made for the average person. Pros can still dump pictures using the belkin card reader, they just can't see them immediately (to the best of my knowledge) in slide shows and such.

60GB and only 25000 "thumbnails"?

Interesting that you can only get 25000 220x176 images on a 60 GB drive. Are the images output to video much higher resolution? Even uncompressed 24-bit PAL or NTSC would only fill about half the drive. I suppose this is a software limitation. It would be nice if the iPods did HDTV.

Ah, I love you guys. You make me laugh.

It's the people who buy those underwater subs, the tablet pcs and such, it's for those who want something nobody else has. That's the U2 iPod. There will be a demand.

As for the photo iPod, get over it. If you want the iPod to be thicker than the origional iPod 1g, then the media reader is good. Until Apple can shrink it, we won't see a media reader. Plus, when the add a media reader, all the Belking/Griffin people will whine and cry about how another 3rd party is being screwed over.

And finally, yes, the iPod is a mature music device. Good. What else can it do? It's not called the iMusic or the iJukeBox for a reason.

Personally I'd love to see an Iron Maiden iPod!

Yes but my point is the only way to make "gapless" playback of mp3's i through cross fades. Wheater it be winamp, itunes or your iPod.
You're completely wrong. I've written an mp3 player, and I can tell you unequivocally that gapless playback is easy as pie. All you need to do is keep the mp3/aac decoding into the same output buffer, even while switching songs. A little clever programming and it'll be seamless.

There's nothing inherent to mp3s that makes gapless playback impossible -- it's just a matter of doing it.
