Wasn't everyone complaining that the iPod wasn't in a color screen and now that it is they are upset about it, I am hoping for one of these for xmas this year.

Well, one person complained Apple should've introduced a new photo device and left the iPod alone (too much convergence). Another complained it doesn't play video (not enough convergence). It just goes to show that no matter what Apple does, they will never please everyone.

I've never heard so many people bitch and complain about a new product in my life.
Stick around here ;) :D

Or just visit the folks here who hollered about what a horrible idea the original iPod was:

Some people seem to think if Apple EVER releases ANY product that they personally don't want OR can't afford RIGHT NOW, the company is doomed

Are you serious? How could this be?
No, I'm not. But I bet I'm not far off...

I didn't think you were serious, but had to ask the girlfriend to be sure...

You know it's funny...the digital video thing...

It never really made that much sense to me why Apple would make a device like that until Steve explained it to me today at the Keynote. It just clicked.

Umm how did you do that? I checkmark the iTunes toolbar but nothing shows up?
right click on the task bar, then pick toolbars, then check itunes toolbar. then see in the itunes preferences under the advanced tab and make sure "minimize itunes to system tray" is unchecked. then minimize itunes and it should show up. i love the feature! i just can't get over it...

I really like the iPod photo and think it will be a great seller. And honestly, I'm surprised at how many people out there think there is no use for the TV slideshow feature. I just returned from backpacking through Eastern Europe and I have lost track of how many people have asked to see my photos already. Since they're digital, I haven't had time to print them off or organize and upload them to a site yet, so it would be great if I could load them into an iPod and run a slideshow that way.

Maybe those people just have boring photos no one would want to see...

"iPod Mini Pic" anyone?

Has a nice ring and zesty "teen" feel, doesn't it?

So given that we have 60 GB iPods now, why does the 12" iBook come with a 30GB hard drive?

The photo iPods are thicker than the 40 GB regular iPod, which is a turnoff. These will probably sell well, but I'm content with a 3G. In a couple of years when the 60 is 299 and as thin as today's 20 I'll probably upgrade.

Agreed.

And it seems to me like this is the only decent way to make a videotape slide show to send lots of pics to people without DVD players or broadband-connected computers. Connect to VCR. Play slide show. Record. Done.

Edit: or, of course: Make DVD slide show. Put in DVD player, connect to VCR, do as above. But that's more of a pain in the butt.

Also, for the record, I personally don't like the U2 iPod's color scheme, but hey, that's just me. I do think it's pretty cool though that you get their signatures etched on the back of the iPod as well as the gift certificate for all their music. Although I'm not a U2 fan, I think this is great for any fans out there...

Also, in what respect is this a limited edition iPod? Limited in the period of time in which you can buy one, or limited in stock?

NON-photo usage

Think of all the fun NON-photo uses you could have for image display.

* I'll put my design portfolio on my iPod--you never know when I might wish to show it, and now I will be able to carry my laptop "just in case" a lot less.

* Presentations from Keynote/PowerPoint etc. can be saved as still images and made portable too.

* Maps. I'll have mini-maps of the trails I hike/bike, for sure.

* Album art playing to TV while your music goes.

* Take some Visualizer screenshots and shuffle them with transitions enabled. Something to look at while you listen :)

* Make some "minified" fake screenshots of OS X, Safari, UT 2004, MS Word, Photoshop, GPS display, satellite TV menu, or whatever, and impress people who don't know any better :D

* And I HOPE Notes Reader's hypertext format can link to images the way it can link to audio. Interactive multimedia of all kinds! Educational, promotisonal... even Myst-like "multiple choice" gaming on your iPod!

Well, most of the "limited" editions I've seen have been accurately described in that there were fewer than an infinite number of them produced... ;) But I doubt that the U2 iPod will be all that scarce once production ramps up. So I think the "limited" is mainly a marketing slogan, although I'm sure they'll make fewer of them than the normal iPods.

Thanks jsw, that's pretty much what I was thinking too... :)

Definitely, that would be slick and save me a lot of time as well. Very useful...

Great, only one small detail - now I need an iPod photo! ;)

not sure if this was already mentioned...seeing as the thread grew while i was away at dinner....but can we consider this as the 5th gen iPod's being sold along side the 4th gens?

I don't think so - the iPod photo is separate, and should basically be considered a 1G iPod photo. After all, when the iPod mini came out no one called it a 4G iPod at the time...

Good thought. Pretty cool to be able to make an audio/video tape right off the iPod!

Note that ALL Macs (even eMac) now have video out built-in and can output composite or S-video. Only the PowerBook actually comes with the cable to do so, though. (It's under $30 for the others.)

That reminds me of a classic line from a recent comic...

"... and these idiots that want electric cars because there's 'no polution'. Yeah, because electricy comes from magic!... not an electic plant. They just go home at night and plug in their car and get electricity from a Jelly Bean Field!" - Dave Mordal (from Last Comic Standing)

I read through those 7 pages.......that was great! The only MacRumors member I recognized though was Arn....and he was kind of defending the iPod while most were bashing it. Maybe their shame led to them no longer posting on MacRumors after the iPod exploded in popularity:)
