U2, the rock band you back when you want to offend absolutely no one.

Just just feel so bland. I never understood how anyone liked them after the 80's.

They basically reinvented themselves after Joshua Tree. Kinda like they flipped off their 'fame' from that album. To me, that was rather huge. I mean, they could have been like so many 'manufactured' groups that stick to a schtick and ride it to the grave, but they said 'Nope, let's do something very different'.

The gnashing of teeth with Zooropa and Achtung Baby was epic. You would have thought they crucified Christ again...

Joshua Tree was SO OVERPLAYED! I heard it damn near everywhere, and over and over again, and they could have just kept doing Joshua Tree formulaic tripe and likely had a good retirement...

With a 'deal' this monumental

With a deal this 'monumental,' I just wish U2 could have come out with a better collection of songs. There are a few out of the 11 I consider 'good,' with everything else falling into what I would call 'B-side territory.' I mean, five years ought to be plenty of time to come up with an album people say 'Wow!' over. But this isn't it.

As for the 'politics' of the deal, I say this: CD revenue has been supplanted by fractions of cents from Spotify and Pandora and other 'streaming' pipelines. I prefer to enjoy my music that way, anyway, realizing (correctly) that CDs equal clutter. I don't need a tangible disc and its requisite plastic case to enjoy the music I like. Indeed, Spotify exposes me to all sorts of bands and artists I'd never discover if my sole way of doing so came in the form of BUYING a CD.

OK, I'm not a U2 fan at all. But is it so awful to get a free album, even if not your first choice? Maybe I'll listen to it some day. Maybe not. Meanwhile, I can easily ditch it if I decide it takes too much room on my phone. All this angst about something that cost nothing, that can be easily thrown away if not wanted. People are interesting -- "I want a different free prize." Get a life. "I'm so mad I'm going to get a SamDung." Good luck with that.

People just like to complain. It's free and if you don't like.... delete it. BIG DEAL!
I am sure if Apple would give free iPhones people would still complain. I guess is part of human nature.

Finally something in "Purchased Songs", and there was me thinking that area would remain empty forever

Well lets not get over the board here, it's been been 15 years since U2 released anything worth listening and my guess is that it's just a PR-stunt to relaunch a slowly fading carreer.

Also some should reread the article, the whole campaign us estimated at 100000000$, nowhere does it say how much of that goes to U2 (a tiny fraction I would guess).

did what you suggested and no result.

If you really want it, just go to the iTunes Store - Purchased, and download it from there.

It's sickening watching people literally complain about being given something for free. If you don't like it, delete it, move on.

It's not the fact that it's free that people are complaining about. I's the fact that Apple seems to be shoving down their customers throats that's the problem.

It can not be deleted, you can only hide it. It will stay in your purchased receipts forever AND iTunes starts to recommend (genius) you other U2 music because it thinks you bought an Album...an so on.

i find being forced to have this record in my collection pretty insulting tbh. thinking twice about continuing with my large itunes-bought collection

If someone came into your house and placed a "free" glass of piss on your kitchen counter, wouldn't you complain?
Just because something is free doesn't mean we want it or should be grateful.

That's the new Illuminati sign.

Wait, so this downloaded into my iTunes? I thought it as just there, free to download?:eek:

You are correct. It hasn't downloaded. Just available to download. However, depending on settings it would show up in your library.

well

If you really want it, just go to the iTunes Store - Purchased, and download it from there.

thats what I'm saying... It says purchased on the download button but there is no download option. I thought that might be because it already was. It was not. It has not appeared on any of my devices.

Woahhh so much hate.

It'd be hard to believe that I was one of the only ones that was actually happy to see this pushed on my device.

They could have made a more clever algorithm though - if you fire up iTunes and have some U2 songs in your library, then go get the new album for free.

Personally I really like the album, and i'm not really a U2 fan. But it should be on the iTunes store as a free download, certainly not in people's libraries if they don't want it!!

If they did the same for Iggy or Nicki's album I'm sure there would be a huge backlash too.

That's the point: the music you listen to is a personal thing. It's not just "snobs" who don't want this album foisted upon them, it's pretty much everyone besides U2 fanboys.

The album and its lead single "The Miracle (Of Joey Ramone)" are the cornerstone of an upcoming marketing campaign by Apple that is worth an estimated $100 million

I'm confused about the $100 million. The Billboard article says there's a $100 million ad campaign, and U2 got paid by Apple for the album, but I'm not reading it that Apple is paying U2 that much money.

When they announced the album giveaway, I assumed that U2 gave it away and it was intended to be a loss leader to increase ticket sales for their next tour. According to Wikipedia, U2's last tour was the highest grossing concert tour of all time.

they gave us music for free that was designed for, and will be sold to grocery stores. u2 has always known extremely well how to make the most money.
