Shareholders should be looking very closely at Tim and whomever else thought it was wise to approve this. Regardless of how much is in the coffers this appears to be a poor business decision on Apple's end.

U2 on the other hand made out like a bandit.

Yes, because Tim has the power to spend $100m without the consent of the board.

Clearly I included others in my statement but feel free to act like the President and spin it to read what you'd like it to read like so it suits your argument.

How can I hide it from my music library on my iPhone? I can't seem to figure it out. :(
You can't do it from your iPhone. You have to click on the iTunes Store in iTunes... log in... then click on "Purchased" from the menu on the right. From there, select the music tab and hide whatever songs you wish. You can do this with apps, books, or anything else you don't want appearing in your purchase history. You'll never see it again unless you unhide it.

That said, it really was a horrible waste of shareholder dollars. Apple clearly is out of touch when it comes to music and that should be the most concerning issue for shareholders.

I couldn't agree more. And, with a $100 million marketing campaign, it's actually costing Apple $200 million. For what I ask? What did they except to achieve with this expenditure? Customer good will?!? Forcing it into the customer's "purchased" list seems to eroded what little good will the action generated.

I seems more or less like a "Stay with Apple" and you'll get free stuff ploy. It won't work (ask M$ about it). A lot of below 30 somethings are jumping ship to services like Spotify and could care less about that grandpa U2 band.

Well, they did show a phone at the end of the tv spot. I'm guessing it's an iPhone.

One silver lining here is that this will force a lot of people to learn the ins and outs of iTunes music management who would have otherwise never had the opportunity

Wouldn't it be nice if I could just "drag and drop" mp3s that I've ripped myself into a real file system and just have them magically work? You know, like an mp3 player is supposed to?

Nonsense like this is making me re-examine the whole farce-- forcing me to maintain a bloated, clunky music library, putting in place all sorts of barriers to prevent controlling my media on my device. Apple loves making us jump through hoops. "Buy somethin', won't ya?"

Android is looking better all the time...

Apple forces the download of an iOS updater to iDevices without device owner's consent (consuming space that cannot be reclaimed without installing the update): a small, but vocal minority complain (me included)

Apple adds a free album to iTunes user accounts: Torches and pickforks sell out everywhere... peasants demand Tim Cook's head on a pole.

IMO there is more to this deal. U2 has a foothold on the music industry and they are respected on many levels. Apple might be using them as leverage to get deals done on that arena.
Tim is a smart guy, I doubt he is just throwing money away for small stuff.

You can not delete it, you can only hide it. It will stay in your purchased receipts forever AND iTunes starts to recommend (genius) you other U2 music because it thinks you bought an Album...an so on.

Robert Kondrk should be fired immediately!

You can delete any purchased item, whether it is an app or music. Yes, it shows in your list of available purchased items not on your device, but wth? Everything you've deleted is there, every app you downloaded and didn't like is there. All the bitching and moaning about Apple giving something away is pathetic.

Steve was just a big groupie with the dollars to fulfill his fantasies. Now, it's just ridiculous.

You are right on, Apple appears to be working on a new album format that includes viewable lyrics, likely with a higher quality sound, according to several stories out this morning. We had already heard Jimmy Iovine was likely pushing for a higher quality format like Neil Young is promoting, and Iovine produced U2's Rattle and Hum, so there already was a long standing relationship. So if U2 becomes one of the first bands with that format it will help get other bands involved and get consumers more interested. FLAC is fantastic, but takes up a ton of storage space compared to MP3's. Apple is probably working on a new format closer to FLAC quality with smaller file size that also can embed visual art like lyrics.

U2's music sucks. It's very VERY unoriginal. How are they going to "innovate" music? Stupid move by Apple.

Also, I thought they absolutely were not going to have any part in the iPhone 6 keynote according to their manager...

Yep it's selling so well that they had to force Apple users to have the album on iTunes even if we didn't like it or want it. Really, on my Purchased Songs Apple?

Interesting.. It doesn't show up in my itunes app on my iOS devices or mac. I use iTunes Match btw.

Yep. Most people here are shortsighted and think Apple is throwing the money away only to give the album for free.
Apple is using U2 in many ideas and tech for music relate content. Besides this I am sure have some business projects that having a partner like U2 can help get it done.
People gotta have more faith on Tim and his team. Steve Jobs was a very smart guy and he believed Mr. Cock could lead his company. So far I don't doubt his choice.

This. Who the hell cares, just delete it, or is that too hard?

I am not sure the order, but on my list of favorite bands I am sure that the following exisist --
  • Beatles
  • Queen
  • CCR
  • Lynord Skynard
  • Styx
  • U2

There are a few that I would add to this list that are not english singers like Mana.

Bottom line, I am okay with this move by Apple and happy to have a free album from one of my favorite bands. if it was from Miley Cirus, I would delete immediately and complain like hell.

If someone came into your house and placed a "free" glass of piss on your kitchen counter, wouldn't you complain?
Just because something is free doesn't mean we want it or should be grateful.

Oh man, just spat out my breakfast. Well said.

On another note, if they start showing up as "recommended for you" based on my library....that is some shady chit.

tim cook..you suck at being CEO...go back to your first job...retails..

he was supply chain
