My uncle had the same situation as he lived out in the sticks. He said he talked to lots of representatives and got nowhere so the next time he drove down to civilization (I kid, it's not THAT remote) I took it to a repair depot for him.

This highlights my biggest issue with Apple desktops: you can't just buy a $20 replacement drive and fix it in 10 minutes...

So true. I knew the risks when I bought my iMac, but that's why I bought the AppleCare so I could mail it back to Apple in case the problem ever arose to have such a component replaced.

Had I known then what I know now, I would have not bought AppleCare and just bought a cheap external drive and still came out cheaper.

A little update to my saga...

I tried calling around at the locations Apple gave me to get my iMac fixed and these are my results...

Palmeral Solutions, Lexington KY - phone disconnected

Murphy's Camera, Lexington KY - they don't even service computers

Best Buy, Lexington KY - they'll fix it, just not under AppleCare

What the heck?! Why did Apple even give me them as an option if my warranty isn't going to pay for the repair or if they don't even fix Macs?!

I'm so close to just selling my iMac as-is and buying a Dell. Is AppleCare transferrable?
