I have to wonder, and mind you I'm strictly speaking out of curiosity and nothing more, but if you find Christmas to be offensive (referring to your agreement with robbieduncan's post), then why does it bother you to be away from your family during that time of year?

Maybe I misinterpreted your agreement as being something it isn't, and if that's the case please forgive me.

I think Christmas is a sham but nevertheless my family celebrates it in a big way and I love and miss them dearly.

I have to agree, it's a sham on an amazing level. It's a disgusting "holiday" and doesn't mean anything even close to what it used to.

But... lol there's always a but, right?

I've made it my time of year to gather with family and friends and just enjoy the time together, give to each other what we can, and celebrate nearing the end of the year. Sure, I've stripped the religion from the meaning, but the point is that now it's got it's own meaning for me.

I think that's a very forward thing for holidays lately. People aren't so stuck anymore on what a holiday is supposed to be or how it started and rather we're just making it our own and choosing whether or not to include certain interpretations of it into our lives.

When they start advertising Christmas doesn't bother me too much.

For commercial television I use my DVR regularly or watch commercial free content on premium channels. So I don't see many of these ads.

My family lives nearby and I already bought my presents so I don't have any stress this time of year. Also for presents I usually save money buy purchasing used high quality products rather than new low quality. I've also made a few pieces of wood furniture instead of buying a present.

I hate the entire season. I wish I could go into hibernation from November 1st through December 31st - waking up in time on New Years Eve to start getting hammered.

Celebrating the birth of an invisible man in the sky's magical son by a woman whose never been schtupped by skipping Thanksgiving dinner with family to stand in line in the freezing cold at Wal-Mart for a not so great deal on a flat panel TV that you can buy on Amazon for less any other time of the year just seems ridiculous to me.

I'm with you on that. 'Tis the season for commercialization!

And this is probably my biggest gripe with the whole thing: It feels fake. "Peace on earth. Goodwill towards men". Really? Where is this the rest of the year? We should only feel this way during a certain time of the year?

"The season of giving": Yep, we should only give during this season. The rest of the year? Screw 'em. Seriously, why are we bombarded with all of these charitable reminders during this one season? Why aren't the Salvation Army bell ringers out during, say March? Why don't we see Toys for Tots during June? Why do we only see news stories about homeless shelters feeding people on Thanksgiving and Christmas? Do Americans only care about charitable giving during this season?

Christmas music is one of the biggest reasons I hate Christmas creep. Two months of being blasted with Christmas carols is enough to make me want to start smashing stereo speakers everywhere. It's the same stuff over and over, and it's everywhere. I do like some Christmas music, including a couple of albums called Merry Axemas V1&2 (various guitarists doing their take on carols) and some TSO stuff (yes, they are cheesy. I still like 'em), but hearing the same old songs in the same old way drives me bonkers.

Aw, Steve, you need new Christmas songs. I got it.

Aww, Nomnom, don't frown. Christmas is wonderful.

If you're like me and don't celebrate Christmas, it's just a major inconvenience. Nothing sucks more than having to fight crowds of people at Target trying to buy Tickle Me Elmos and Furbys or whatever the latest craze is so I can buy laundry detergent and toilet paper - you know, stuff I need.

And the music is awful. Just awful. And I know many people who celebrate Christmas who think the music is awful.

No kidding. You go to Target to do normal household shopping and need an NFL offensive line to clear a for you to be able to move around.

Wow, sounds like you guys have it a lot worse than here... Guess there are benefits to a 5 mill population after all, such as less crowding at the stores near Christmas :D

I'm with the people who arent against Christmas, but it's encroachment further and further out. Places here have been doing it since mid September. It's just stressful. I have little money, and seeing retailers push their wares under the guise of Christmas so early just makes me resent them. I mean, can't we have just a little break? Come January 2 the Easter eggs come out.

Maybe I'm in the minority...but I'm the mommy of 4 year old twins, and they know Christmas is close when they start seeing the decorations.

Which means I now have 2 whole months to use Santa as ammunition when they are not being perfect little angels! ;)

Guilt FTW!

I do feel for you, bro, I really do. Please let us know if you get some good news, I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you! :)

Thanks, I had an interview with an engineering consulting firm a month ago and had all but forgotten about it until today when they sent me an email saying they were still interviewing (that's a lot of interviews...) and that they'd get back to us with decisions by the end of next week.

First choice job of all companies out there, so here's hoping. It would be nice to have something by Christmas so we can stop spending our house downpayment on getting by.

I'm with ya. Scrooges of the world unite! Bah....HUMBUG!!!
I stopped celebrating Christmas the second year after my Mom passed, so about the last four years. Haven't missed it one bit and I have money in my wallet in December. My brother and sister probably stopped respecting me over it but I'm ok with that.

I should also point out that I don't celebrate any holidays anymore as well, Thanksgiving included.
