Meh. The fisher Price joke was cute the first 20,000 times. Now its just getting old.

I only repeated it because earlier in this thread someone said OS X looks like Fischer Price. I found it ironic.

I can't believe that someone said apple is afraid to change the interface, or something. Apple completely changed almost everything about the interface with OS X, and people complained constantly about it. Now, we all know that OS X has the best interface out there. I'm glad that Apple was able to do it then, but there's no reason to redefine the interface as often as Microsoft does. It seems like they do it with every release of Windows. Once I got used to the stupid task pane in XP, now it's gone in Vista. It's ok to stick with a good interface once you find it (although that may be Microsoft's problem)

Just my opinion.

Apple is obviously not afraid to change the interface because they keep looking for one that works. We're up to 7 different examples, right? I can't believe I complained about Linux having so many different GUIs. :p

I think that once Apple focuses on one in Leopard, we'll all be a lot happier. At the time of the initial Public Beta release, we were all a little shocked by the changes. The liquid effect of the progress bar was attention-getting to say the least. It certainly killed the old barber pole look. I'm not sure anyone was truly happy with the look, we just didn't know what to think.

These few years later, I can truly say that I dislike the brushed metal as much as the first day it was on my Mac OS X desktop. The Unified look without the brushed texture seems much more pleasant and probably takes less time to render.

i dont expect much changes in leopard. but i do see that the next HUGE OS (not X but 11) I would like to see more realistic interface. I want to be able to feel like I'm playing with the OS, kind of how you can interact with Wii. I think that would change the way we compute and use the computer. that just me. it is very possible for that to happen. I mean we a little over 3 years away from 2010 so anything is possible and technology changes so drastic so why not?

Is there anything wrong AT ALL in force quiting while progs are opening? What's the 'official' line? My persistent pre-X mentality always tells me it's wrong.

I do it practically every time I use the computer, because I always mess with the dock and accidently press on an application. Nothing bad ever happens from it :).

I agree. I've never loved or hated brushed metal, but the less it's used, the happier I am.

itunes...ish look to all OS apps.

maybe a black theme. :p

Other than that, I couldn't care and just want it to function flowlessly.

I really don't understand why everyone hates the Brushed Metal, much less why they think it's on the outs (so what happens to all those gazillions of third party apps that have embraced it? They all look out of place now despite what the Human Interface Guidelines say?).

Nor do I see the problem with an "inconsistent" UI -- ok, the way some UIs have drawers while others have sidebars is a little confusing, but other than that, as long as the *behavior* of the UIs are more or less the same, and are all attractive and functional in their own ways, and don't clash with one another, I say the more the merrier. Brushed metal, the Unified toolbar look, and, in very simple utility-like apps (like Preview or Terminal), the standard Aqua look, are all just fine.

Oh yeah, about drawers, and specifically changing the Preview UI from Aqua to Unified -- is anyone else upset about this? Preview is one of the few apps where I really, really *prefer* and appreciate the way Drawers work, and now they're changing it with a space-wasting sidebar. Blech. Preview windows' size and shape should be defined solely by their contents, not by a sidebar attached to them. Unified makes it look like a much "heftier" application, rather than the small document-viewer that it is. And the plastic buttons look stupid in the Leopard previews of Preview (oddly enough, I think they look fine in Mail -- an app that's *supposed* to look like a more substiantial app and not just a document viewer).

One thing I hope they don't do is use the iTunes 5 look... anywhere else. It's awful. Bland, monochrome, squared-off, a throwback. Besides, any app that uses that look is going to look too much like iTunes.

As far as colors go, I'd love to see Graphite become the default look (with the "jolly rancher" theme available for those who, for some inconceivable reason, prefer it), but I doubt that would happen. I hope that for once, this time, they don't mess with the menu bar, or the Apple or Spotlight icons in it -- it looks *perfect* the way it is now (in Graphite, anyway. Icons are a li'l too blue in Jolly Rancher).

I would hope they finally kill off the oldest and ugliest OS X UI elements, that often show up in older parts of the system (some Utilities apps, for example) that haven't really been updated in awhile -- like those rounded-off yet square buttons with the pinstripes, or the square pinstriped toolbars in some apps with very, very dark drop shadows... ewwww. Unattractive and increasingly out of place.

Hey, maybe they'll surprise us. That would be awesome, would have me with my guard down. I also would love a black theme.

The graphics for these apps are just pulled from the system resources anyway. It would be a graceful transition. Kinda like installing UNO.

OS X rules over Windows now. Always did. Always will.
One improvement I'd like to see is a built in "beam me up , Scotty" thing.
srf4real, your icons are beautiful!!!!! what sets are they from? wow, your UI looks great. installing uno would make it look even better, IMHO.

Nautilus!!!

So basically what you want is Windows?

No, cuz Windows has other problems. I want OS X with a good GUI. The current one really leaves a lot to be desired.

Basically, I'd like to have Gnome Nautilus running natively on OS X. The shape and colour of buttons and widgets are just details, what I need is a proper "file manager".

I agree with much of this. Some of what people are requesting reminds me too much of Windows. OS X has just enough eye candy to stand out among other OS's but that doesn't mean (IMHO) that apple needs to reinvent them every couple of years. I still love my blue scroll bars and gum drop or jolly rancher etc, buttons. I DONT want anything dreary and dull looking. Of course its shouldn't stand out too much, but it shouldn't be slapped together. That is part of the "sleekness" of OS X. I thing some mac heads worry to much over what Redmond will TRY and offer (remember the iTunes for Windows rush?).

And I don't understand why some people don't like the "Traffic" buttons. I think it's a really smart idea.

I agree, and seeing how they're from the NeXT era (i believe) I think their a safe bet to stay. The concept is not so much cool as it is simple and not well..........insulting. The consistency never bothered me much. In fact in some cases i like it. I use Logic and can say it would REALLY suck if every app or "everyday" apps had the same feel. But in logic I prefer it as opposed to Cubase.

IF nothing else.......LEAVE THE GUM DROP BUTTONS, SCROLL BAR, and PROGRESS BARS alone!!!!!
