Definitely going for 16" maxed out, or nearly maxed out (max RAM definitely, storage at least 2 TB). My current laptop has seen its best days and I need the raw computing power for work. I can remote in and use our computing farm for power, but being able to do a lot local and in parallel or on the go is a great timesaver for me. Hopefully the 16" will have a bigger GPU than the 14" or can be upgraded.

For me it might come down to what else they release. I need one machine which has a lot of CPU cores and RAM, but my laptop doesn't need to be that powerful, so if they were to release a larger, more powerful iMac, I might get that and a 14" laptop.
But that's clearly more expensive than just getting a 16" laptop which can do both things and has the benefit of being a lot more comfortable to work-on when not plugged-in to the external display.
I guess if they released a new cheaper display with built-in webcam, that might be the ideal situation to go with the 16".

I'm waiting for a new iMAC with at least 4 TB ports, and I need to keep 10GBe too......

I'm still not going to order straight after the event. I ordered the 16" half a year after the announcement and I thought the overheating was a minor problem hitting a few people. Better safe than sorry again!
I've been trying to replace my 2016 MBP for a couple of years now. I've been waiting for a 16" M1 MBP. Saved the money and has been burning a whole in my pocket for a while now. Fingers crossed for the 18th.
It's a shame there isn't a lower-end MacBook with a display bigger than 13" (soon to be 14".) I've been using an old 15 inch 2012 Pro and the extra screen does make it a lot comfier like you say. I have an external monitor but being able to work anywhere, especially for those of us without a permanent office, is really handy. But if I want to get a 16 inch with Apple Silicon I'll have to shell out at least £2400. Maybe one day there'll be a 15 inch Air...
I'm actually really excited for the 14".
I had the 15" 2016 MBP, and was waiting for this release, but couldn't stop myself picking up the base model M1 Air early this year after everyone raved about the M1. I LOVE the smaller 13" body size, but the screen *is* a little on the small size, so I'm looking forward to what will presumably be a bit more screen real estate in a similar (if slightly thicker) case.
(Worth noting that I've got a 40" Ultrawide 5K2K monitor for when I'm not on the go. So the need for a 16" - which had been my original plan - has kind of dropped. Just hoping that the specs are similar between 14 and 16, unlike the Intel years)

I'm in! Massively overdue an update and was waiting to see what Apple Si would bring since first rumoured, then when it did, waiting another year for these higher end larger ones.
Probably a 16" (it's to replace my 17", even though I'm often using it in conjunction with a monitor >95% of the time)
May go 32GB (future proof - as I make these things last, and 64GB may be a bit OTT/too expensive)
Gonna have to be 4TB storage (as current one has 3TB in, and 8TB is too much £££)
If there's a higher graphics option I may go with that if reasonably priced (since I might do some gaming on this thing since it'll be about 10x the speed of my current one and should actually be a portable Mac that's half decent at modern graphics!)
At this point an M1 would be amazing, but I want the extra storage and bigger screen, so may as well have my mind completely blown when I get it! Pretty much no more audio production glitches in Ableton again, ever, while not caring about freezing tracks, mixing sample rates, or worrying about how many plugins I run!!! Woo-hoo! Christmas every day!

BTW, anyone know how fast an SD card slot is likely to be? I don't tend to use SD cards often for much, but rumoured having one on here means I kinda get future "internal" storage upgrade options. An SD card can basically live in it permanently and I can keep my photos library/iTunes or something that doesn't need fast access times with me, not hanging off drives on dongles, or stuff being left at home. So I can probably add another 1 TB SD storage in a couple of years, no problems, without disproportionate prices or it no longer being a laptop I can take anywhere with *all* my stuff on? 🤔
Base 14" should be fine for me, I have several other laptops and PC's. Looking for something powerful and portable with great battery life. I have a Macbook Air already which has been great.

I'm hoping the 14" comes in around £1799 but bumping the RAM and SSD will take me over £2k quickly!

Sounds like it should be congratulated and may well be due retirement, but I think the gold award for long service as a main computer goes to my Mid-2010! 😁
Until I got my iPad Pro last year, the number of days of its life it didn't get used I could probably count on just my fingers and toes. It's been on stages, holidays, DJ sets, a part time uni course, and outlasted a marriage and is older than my niece. Since the iPad arrived it's had a few days off, but still used most days for hours. You definitely can't say I haven't got my moneysworth.

You wouldn't think I worked in tech on all the latest things, would you? Maybe it's just I appreciate the tech more so see the greatness in it, even when it's old and there's tons of far newer stuff. Steve Jobs was still in charge when I got this!

I got the Touchbar 2019 Intel but it's just not... very good. Fan goes on A LOT for what i would deem basic tasks and for what the Air i had before could handle just fine so I can't say i've been too impressed with it tbh.
More screen space, M1x and FINALLY a 1080p camera* is all i wish for!
*Tired of having zoom calls and looking like an extra from a home movie in 1992

I can definatley understand your caution. I would hope we won't see overhearting issues on the Apple Silicon chips due to their lower power usage. But, that's not to say there couldn't be other issues.

If the 14" 16/1TB costs what people expect, it'd be €2820. That's about what I paid for my late 2013 8/256 13" + inflation. Not cheap, but worth it. The 16" with my current 64GB/2TB upgrades was way more, and way less worth it... for me.
I don't think overheating should be a problem with the M1X. But who knows. Worst case, there's the trusty "old" M1 to fall back to. Everybody in the office that I got one for is loving theirs. They seem to be what a laptop should be - very solid, and first time right. Though my M1 mini starts flickering on HDMI if I don't turn on HDR
