Right, emailed O2 about my new 3G iPhone I will be upgrading from my current one, basics that haven't been mentioned are...

1. You can purchase a 3G iPhone online. We won't perform another credit check, as you will only be upgrading your current contract and not starting a new contract.

2. You can activate your O2 iPhone using a PC/MAC via iTunes. You'll be prompted to transfer your existing mobile number to your new iPhone contract during the activation process.

What is the e-mail address for O2 support, cant seem to find it on their site...

O2 are having a laugh if they think that this is any way to treat existing customers!

If you have to extend your contract by another 18 months then all the line rental you have paid until now should cover more than £100!!!!!

Its daylight robbery!

and with those prices you would be lucky to get £50 for the original iphone!

Can anyone see them changing their mind?? Doubt it!

I dont understand why you think you're getting a poor deal? O2 would be quite within their rights to not let you upgrade your iPhone at all unitl the 17th month of your contract, just like any other phone contract! When you originally decided to buy your first iPhone no one mentioned anything about getting the next one for free! You agreed to an 18month contract at £35 a month with the iPhone. You're getting out of your contract about 9 months early, and getting to take advantage of the latest iPhone, for only £99, sounds like a good deal to me!

i work for o2 and if a customer buys the latest Nokia, say an N95, and the N96 comes out in a couple of months, do you think o2 will let them upgrade early to the brand new N96 for only £99??? I dont think so. They have to wait till the 18 months is up and upgrade to whichever phone is available then.

So to call it day light robbery is just wrong, think about it!

I really hope the tethering thing is true. Really really really.

But not just because tethering would be handy occassionally (to use Flash based sites on the move mostly), but because it suggests that the entire Bluetooth functionality is actually being looked at, and hopefully it would also mean file transfer and stereo audio (and keyboard support).

Does anyone have any idea what happens if you are an existing O2 customer with an 18 month contract but don't have an iPhone? I want to upgrade to the iPhone 3G but my contract doesn't expire for several months. It appears that only existing iPhone customers can upgrade whilst still within their 18 month contract?!!

Cheers

it says on the o2 website, that if you're currently in a contract that isn't an iphone contract, you can upgrade at the end of your current term

To expect an existing customer to pay the same for an upgrade than that of a new customer is where the robbery comes in.

The is no such thing as loyalty to your customers these days, there are a lot of customers who have been paying O2 their line rental for 'x' months only to find that they do not get rewarded for their custom.

In the past i have seen telecoms companies give a free upgrade to an existing customer 12 months into their contract to a handset worth £500 or £600 sim free, if O2 were to offer such a deal then i would be willing to wait it out, but no such offer has been made so we can only expect to pay £100 at the end of our term and be worse off than doing it now.

Remember we all paid £269 or more for our iphones plus line rental, but still someone who wants to pay £10/month more to O2 gets the free iphone... not those who have been lining O2's pockets.

A little discount is all we loyal customers asked for or expected, instead we are shown that whoever pays the most gets the best deal not those who have shown loyalty to the company.

I've got an idea. Why don't the mods merge all the USA/AT&T related iPhone threads into one thread too?

There are a number of different topics here, and just because they have to do with O2 or the UK doesn't mean they belong in the same thread.

By the way, to any whingers regarding the O2 contracts, from what we've been reading, O2 is doing us right in acknowledging that the price of bandwidth is going down and in ripping up our previous contracts. AT&T is charging customers $10/month over 2 years ($240) for what admittedly will be a lot more data, but in 12 months, these AT&T customers are not going to be happy with the rates that they are paying for data. O2 was wise to keep the same price points while equipping us with 21st century tech. A happy customer is a loyal customer, and customer acquisition and retention is the name of the game in this business.

OK - another whinger here regarding the O2 contract. It's not a question of wanting a free upgrade when the new phone is released at the same price. The pricing plan is entirely different now and people who paid full price for the 2G phone recently have been ripped off. Obviously if you bought it a year ago when it came out that's different but what if you bought it a week ago? Where's the line?

I paid £320 for a 16gb iPhone in March. If I had known when I bought the phone three months ago that a 3G version would be released in June AND that it would be less than half the price, I would have waited. Who wouldn't? Of course, there were rumours then that a 3G version would be released. Strong rumours even. But they were no more than rumours, with guesses at release time ranging from from June to Christmas, or even next year. And there was no suggestion at all that when the 3G version came out it would be less than half the price of the 2G version.

To get the 3G version of the same phone that I have now, on the same tarriff that I have now, I would have to pay an extra £159. That's a lot. The only concession to me as an existing iPhone owner over and above a new customer is that I can tie myself to a new 18 month contract. Phew!

I don't expect to be able to get a 3G iPhone for free, obviously, as it is a better specced phone, but at the same time I should get some credit for what I paid. There ought to be a sliding scale of extra discounts for recent purchasers.

Don't forget that your 16GB bought in March is worth quite a lot of money, particularly if you've looked after it and can sell it unlocked.

I sold an unlocked 16GB (bought in March) on eBay a few days ago and it went for £350! Money recouped in full.

Now I can have the 16GB iPhone 3G for £59 (as I'm on the £45 tariff).

No complaints here. :)

I have a uk iphone under an o2 contract and have a few questions regarding our current iphones;

1. If we give them to a partner and they phone up o2 to join up to an iphone tariff are they tied into an 18 month contract?

2. If I decide to sell my version 1 iphone is it just a case of taking the sim out, resetting the phone and selling it? Is there anything awkward or war I should be aware of before seling it?

Cheers guys

1. Well two options, keep old iPhone, use your new iPhone contract to keep it activated (any O2 sim will work in it then). Or sign another contract for your partner.

2. Yes, pretty much.

Tough ****, I hate posts like yours. I bought some ham from a shop the other day, the next day it was half price, I should get half my money back, I wasn't to know it was going to be half price a day later, where is the loyalty?? For fark sake, get a grip.

Well said that person.
You pays your money you takes your chance. I was lucky enough to buy the original iPhone on launch day in the UK so have been in there from the very start.

I was thinking that there was no way I was going to be able to afford a 3G iPhone and then O2 announce that they are going to offer it for £99. A bargain in my opinion.
I have already registered my interest

ok.. let me put it this way.

you buy a nokia N95 on an 18 month contract, you get it for free..
3 months later, they announce the N95 8gb, and release it a month later.
o2 do nothing, because you are tied into an 18 month contract that still has 14 months left to run when they get this new shinier piece of technology in stock..

o2 are being kind to you existing contract customers. on the basis of, they are ripping up your existing contract, and letting you take out a new 3g iphone contract..

if it wasn't an apple, you'd have to walk into an o2 store, take out a second contract, for your new nokia n95 8gb...

think about it that way.. YOU'RE GETTING OFF SCOT FREE..
me.. i have to pay to get out of my current contract as it is with t-mob, to move to o2... i don't see o2 paying off the rest of my contract, which is hell of a lot less than your £35 x 14.... £490...

and do you honestly thing anyone would just walk up to you and give you nearly £500 for CHANGING phones to the LATEST..

I have a question:

I have been with O2 for around 4 years and I've had the same contract the whole time. It was a 12 month contract to begin with and it gave me the option to upgrade my phone after 12 months....I didn't though because I got a phone from another family member. The same thing happened each year. So yeah basically what I want to know is am I eligible for an upgrade at anytime because I have not once upgraded my phone in the entire time I've been with them?

yep.. you're a perfect customer according to o2... because you've been paying a contract and only getting minutes, and no subsidies on handsets... they love you.. they won't want you to upgrade, but you can!!! maybe you can blag a bit more discount... maybe not...

Score!

The only reason I didn't upgrade the after the first year was because when I phoned up they wanted to charge me 80 pounds to upgrade (i forget which handset it was). My mate had the exact same contract and a week earlier upgraded to the exact same phone for free, so naturally I told they where to go! Fairly certain I've been with them for 4 years and a month. I hope you're right on the discount front! Really need to change my contract because my free minutes are only off-peak minutes and I occasionally forget this and end up spending extra money on top of the 25 quid I pay for my bill.

Cheers for answering that buddy!

If you bought it on launch day, then fair enough. What if you bought it last week though?

.... and sassenach, if you really think comparing the pricing of a piece of consumer electronics to pricing of perishable foodstuffs is a convincing argument then the world must be a confusing place for you. No wonder you're so angry!

Score!

At that stage you should have told them that you wanted to terminate your contract and take your number with you (by getting a PAC code).

They probably would have given you the upgrade for free, failing which you could have shopped around for a better deal with a free phone, or got a better deal by starting afresh with O2.

There have been some amazing deals available over the last few years.

I don't understand the grief that O2 are getting. In terms of the upgrade prices and freebies for existing iPhone customers, I think its a great deal.

There's always the risk that something new will come out soon when you buy tech, but you just have to try and make an informed decision I guess. Also, its not like anyone's current iPhones are going to stop working. With the app store coming online and the fact some people will prefer the metal backed case (not to mention the unlocking and exporting to other countries industry that seems to be in full flow), I'm sure you'll be able to get decent money for your handset second hand.

And this might sound harsh, but if anyone on here did buy an iPhone recently, surely they can't be surprised by the 3G announcement given the amount of strong rumours that have been on here for the last few months? Even the mainstream press have been reporting for a while now that the 3G version was expected in June.

I'm not O2's biggest fan, but I've been very pleasantly surprised by how they've handled the move to the 3G handset. And yes, there's another contract extension, but I don't think that's a big deal if you're happy with your phone and the service.
