Hi guys - I've just had the same thing happen to me - it's 10pm, so I'm guessing I'll have to wait till tomorrow to find out what they say.

As with Hustle, I've never had a problem before, paid all my bills (including most recently, a £125 mobile phone bill to Orange).

I'll let you all know what happens. Pretty sad about it, too.
Hopefully just a glitch in the system. Good luck getting it sorted.

I got that "O2 needs more time" message last tursday too. Waited 24 hours and decided to give them a call. As it turned up, when I left O2 (had a contract there for a friend of mine) 2 years ago I left the last bill of £85 unpaid. Paid that over the phone and was told to try activating my iPhone in iTunes again. Had it syncing 1 minute later :)

Try logging into your O2 account with the username you picked during the activation process. If you see your number (half way down the page) make a note of it and call iPhone activation help line. The will tell what went wrong.

Thanks guys. I've just realised it's probably the same problem I always have. My bank details have my full name and I've had problems setting up direct debits before, when I only provide my first and last names.

I really hope it doesn't cause me more hassle, or I'm going to go to my bank and tell them to change my name to just my first and last names. :)

Hi guys,

Small update: It's been 22 hours since I first tried to register the iPhone online. I called and emailed today and just got told to wait 24 hours for the credit check to happen.

I'm desperately trying to figure out what it could be. Especially since:

  • I’m currently in credit with a £2000 overdraft.
  • I’ve always paid my credit card bill immediately by Direct Debit
  • I’ve never been in debt.
  • I've always paid my (often £100+) Orange mobile phone bills and direct debits in full and on time.
  • I've spent over £6000 on Apple products over the last few years.
  • I've spent over £2000 on iTunes (although perhaps I’m just quite stupid to have spent that much)

I did move six months ago, but aside from that, I can't really think what the problem could be. I'm also slightly concerned, since I heard if they do turn you down, they don't tell you why. So what - if they turn me down, I can never get an iPhone?

No offense at all to people who hack their iPhones! I'm fine with anyone else doing it, but I just didn't want the hassle of having to do that and I'm more than happy to switch to an O2 contract.

Anyway, enough of my moaning - we'll see what happens I guess.

Are you on the electoral roll at your current address?

Did you enter your address in the same format as it is displayed on the Post Office website? They are very fussy about this.

I have no idea, but I doubt I did enter it exactly the same, to be honest, Sneeks. :) I did offer in my email to take my passport and most recent bank statement into my local O2 store, if there were any discrepancies about my name or address, and they said I didn't need to do that in their response.

So you may be right - it could be that I input my address incorrectly.

Have you ever had a loan? I think you can get a bad credit rating simply because you've never borrowed any money and therefore don't have a track record of paying it back...

Yah - I know about that - but I've had an overdraft and paid that back in full, and I've had credit cards which I pay in full by direct debit every month.

Hi guys,

Okay, new update. I paid for a credit report with Experian (the people O2 use) and my credit report has gone from great, to completely crap, because Experian don't have my latest Royal Mail or Electoral Roll information, despite the fact that the local council registration people came round and registered us six months ago. Brilliant.

Experian basically have no information on me at all, so how and when do they update this information? And how do I register my new address with Royal Mail?

I still haven't heard from O2, but I presume/hope they're getting Experian to update their information. I've got in touch with Experian and have to wait for them to get back to me, too, but hopefully I'll be able to get them to update my credit information a little sooner.

I have to say, this is a little crap. I've worked very hard to never go into debt, always pay my bills on time, and generally be a good consumer and citizen (I know how lame that sounds) and in return I'm basically non-existent to the credit people because I've never had any problems before.

Anyway... rant over... for now. ;)

Hi Source

I hope you get this sorted soon, it must be highly frustrating.

Try the free online credit report facility with Equifax. If you signup for the 12 month subscription at a cost of £69.99 then you have 30 days free. So long as you cancel within this time you will not be charged anything.

Thanks Sneeks. :)

I called O2, they were very nice and said "This is almost done for you Mr X. Please just wait till tomorrow afternoon and it should be all organised."

Whether they mean they'll know whether I can have the phone or not, I'm not sure. They did mention the option to put down a deposit, which I'm also perfectly happy with. Anyway... As is quickly becoming my catchphrase: We'll see.

My iPhone was finally activated!!!!!!!!!!!

O2 SUCK.

I did a credit check with Equifax which arrived this morning which said my credit was great!

O2 really screwed the pooch on this one - they kept me waiting 3 days for the exact problem with my address I told them it would be on Tuesday morning!

They kept on saying "Please wait a further 24 hours" So this time I just said "No - please find out what the problem is and let's get it sorted out together."

So they did and it's all sorted. FUNK SAKE - THREE WASTED DAYS!!!

I'm very happy, but I'm a little peeved about the way things went.

Thanks to everyone for their support and for listening to me moan (still moaning!) over the last few days.

Great news!

I had a similar problem with O2 refusing activation without giving a reason. My credit rating is great, and I only ended a 6+ years contract with O2 6 months ago!

It turned out (after lots of calls) they simply wanted two proofs of my address (why I don't know as I've lived in my current place for 7+ years including during my last O2 contract). I gave details over the phone and was activated shortly after.

Never had such a problem with anyone else. Sigh.

Thanks again guys - the iPhone is well and truly awesome... I love it. :) Absolutely incredible. I'm still not exactly enamored with O2's service so far, but I can appreciate it was an issue with the records. I just wish they would have listened to me when I called them three days ago and told them exactly what the problem would be - but they just ignored me and told me to wait. Sometimes the customer might be able to help you out a little bit, you know?

Me too! I think it's because they're trying to rely on computers as much as possible, and computers aren't perfect and can't work out silly discrepancies in information, so it just stops and "Computer says no!".

I had the same problem but fortunately only for 3 days. Very annoying days but the anger was eased when the iPhone was finally activated.

After 2 weeks I can still say it's the best mobile I have ever owned.
