The special offer is that most people will be able to sell their iphone for the price of buying out their contract(maybe more), so it allows people who wouldn't have been able to upgrade to be an early adopter for the same price as new customers.

Pretty cool if you ask me.

I wan't to leave O2 when my contract expires next year so there is no way in hell I'm renewing my contract.

Will buy it PAYG, get a microsim and finnish my contract using iPhone 4.

O2 have just announced the iPhone 4 tariffs - pretty much as the iPhone tariffs currently are, though unlimited data has been replaced with 500MB inclusive (and optional bolt-ons for an extra 500MB for £5 or extra 1GB for £10).

Looks like a good time to switch to...
whats the best sim only package?

currently have simplicity with o2 but want to go orange - the packages dont seem as good though....
Well I moved to giffgaff in January and I'm very pleased I did. They are a low cost SIM only PAYG outfit that runs on the O2 network (they are actually owned by O2 as well - they kind of spun out of one of O2's marketing departments and set up on their own). As well as having some of the lowest PAYG prices (8p calls, 4p texts, free on-net calls & texts), they also have some very attractive monthly bundles too (they call them goodybags).

Probably of most interest to iPhone users would be the £10 for 100 UK xnet mins + unlimited UK texts + unlimited UK data, £15 for 300 mins etc., and £35 for unlimited mins etc. They also offer payback for helping out on their forum (this is in lieu of a dedicated call centre and so far seems to be working pretty well - it's also supported by a core team of web-based support staff too for dealing with account-specific issues). There is also payback for helping to promote giffgaff (they do minimal direct advertising themselves) - for example you get payback for recommending giffgaff to others, so if you want to give them a go my username there is simon69c... ;)

As far as I know they won't be doing microSIMs - at least not initially anyway, so you would need to cut the SIM down yourself (or get one of those natty little SIM-puncher things to do it for you), but I think that's a minor inconvenience for the savings (and payback) you can get.
