What model are you getting?

The iPad is still one product I’ve not still bought in to. I’ve not found one scenario where I’d pick it over a MacBook or phone.

Kids love them though… but glorified robolox (sic) and YouTube screens for them.
Don’t get me started on Roblox.

That app seems to be impenetrable to apples screen time. I can control all other games on my children's devices except Roblox!

On the topic of iPad, still using my trusty iPad air 2, however, these days it stays wall mounted in the kitchen now.

So as expected 14 Plus flopped miserably.

Whoever makes these iPhone line up decisions needs their head testing.
You can’t hike prices on a barely refreshed 2013 model and expect it to shift. I think people will either want the 14 pro because that’s what all the adverts are for, or the cheaper 13.

My Air 2 is still going and being used however just picked up an M1 Pro after the announcement the other day and my god does it feel dated next to the Pro. Like stepping into a completely different era.

I got the Belkin iPhone mount and woven USB-C charging cable today.

Hmm.. as a fan of apple tech, of course I would like the latest and greatest iPad, but it would be a splurge for me, as nowadays, my iPad usage really is just for watching catchup tv and YouTube whilst doing the dishes, plus its the home hub to control my homekit accessories.

I don’t game on it like i use to, take it around with me and have rarely used it to take photos or videos.

If i could pick up a sealed or refurb last gen iPad that had released within the last year or two for under £300 - doesn’t have to be a pro but needs to be significantly more powerful than my iPad Air 2, then maybe I would..

Totally with you. However it was not a splurge for me as a voucher for Length of Service at work paid for it.

The Air was due an upgrade (as is my mac but cannot justify the cost given the issues with the base air and don’t need the Pro and upspend to get there). Especially as I’m now using it more and being able to travel a bit more again it was getting used everywhere.

If it lasts me almost as long as the Air 2 had it’ll have been more than a worthwhile investment

plus its the home hub to control my homekit accessories.
I can't even use that as an excuse.. got nest cameras, wifi and thermostats which are not natively HomeKit compatible. had google home mini's (accumulated a bunch of free ones over the years) and tried the HomePod mini.. but really struggle with the basics with Siri on it...

but... tied into the apple ecosystem with my apple one sub!

I hope 'matter' does grow in its adoption which might make my home automation a lot easier in the future.

Have you looked at Homebridge? It's allowed me to see my Nest doorbell and external camera through HomeKit as well allowing me to control the myriad of Tapo smart plugs and bulbs.

I currently have it running on my iMac, but I'm planning to move it to an old Raspberry Pi I've got kicking around.

(this would negate the need for you to buy an iPad, though - sorry!)

You thought of running homebridge (https://homebridge.io) on something like a Raspberry pi or in docker?

I use it as part of my home automation systems (along with Home Assistant, Conbee deConz for Zigbee and zwave) and homebridge makes non compatible stuff, work.

I have Blink, Reolink, Nest, Ring doorbell, yale locks and various non HomeKit zigbee devices all in my home app now

My Belkin mount arrived today - really impressed with it. Going to update my Mac Air to Ventura RC after work to test it out!

It is really nice. I have had to order an Xtremeskin for MacBook as doesn’t work with a clamshell on.

You picked the right day. Another RC released!!

Returned briefly to ask for a bit of (OT) advice. 😉

I was going to buy a M1 IPP last year but was waiting to see if they trickled-down the mini LED panel to the 11” this year. No luck on that, but i didn’t want to wait another 18mo for the rumoured OLED upgrade (my 2017 10.5 is dying, white patch on screen and battery well past its best) so I was going to buy an 11” M2 1TB cellular through the education store. However, I found a heavily-discounted M1 11” 2TB cellular on Amazon for £440 less than the education price for the M2 I was going to buy so ordered that. Do you think that’s a better buy or should I just suck up the extra cost and get the M2 I was originally going to get? I don’t need the extra storage I’m getting with the M1 but would like to hang on to this for 3y or so, wondering if the M2 would be more future-proof with the faster processor, BT 5.3 etc.? I guess partly it’s just me thinking “but it’s not the latest model”…

I think it depends what you want it for maybe? The only difference between them that might have affected me was the hovering Apple Pencil dot!!!!
I never use my iPad for its camera so that’s pointless and I don’t need the faster processor. One thing I did want was the better FaceTime camera as, since lockdown, I do a fair amount on teams/zoom - I‘m loving the iPad Air at the moment (it’s also M1) and it’s fine for my needs - I’ll think again next time round if the pro actually has something new and interesting.
