The UK iPhone does support those being auctioned off by OFCOM but doesn't list them as so because non of those frequencies are being used at the time of it's launch.

Can you provide a source for this hopefully true statement - Apple would have no common sense reason not to list the supported bands and the 800 and 2600 bands are definitely not listed as supported.

Of course Apple doesn't have to conform to common sense either but there you go...

So you're definitely getting it on launch day? Did you buy it PAYG or arrange a contract?

Contract - though not arranged yet. CPW are just taking deposits tonight (I suppose to keep the calls flowing.) They will call back all of us who've paid deposits once the networks announce pricing to set up the contract. They promise to match or beat the network's pricing.

Have sold my 4S which will cover the contract cost of the new handset, and hopefully a few months worth of contract payments.

Fully expect info regarding Nano Sims to come from Orange, T-Mobile, Vodafone and o2 in the coming days. I see 3 have already said on Twitter they are available as of tomorrow so expect the other companies to follow suit when they put their iPhone 5 pages up on the website. I need to nab one from Orange myself.

It's the old "Caveat Emptor" (buyer beware) with CPW.

They advertise their iPhones as "SIM Free", which is technically true, what they don't emphasise is the fact that they will lock to the first SIM you insert.

So, a very different iPhone to the one would would buy from Apple.

You have been warned! :p

I wouldn't personally say very different though I take your point. I'm lucky since I'm taking out a new contract, so having a locked phone for the duration of that contract doesn't bother me.

Managed to get mine down to £10 last year by requesting my PAC code and they offered me a 12 month contract for £10 p.m. with 300 mins talk or text & all-you-can-eat. Well worth the strategy (with any network) when you're out of contract. :)

giffgaff is still better with 250 minutes, unlimited texts and unlimited internet for £10 plus the opportunity to earn money ;)

Well, the main (and only) difference is that a 4S bought "SIM Free" from CPW for £499 will lock to the 1st SIM you insert, but the same 4S bought from Apple, for the same £499 will be permanently unlocked.

I know it doesn't affect you, but I thought it was worth mentioning.

Whaaaat? Is that a legacy deal from years back? The only tethering they do now is £25

Nope, just the regular 'PAYG All-In-One 15 Add-on' tariff. As far as Im aware PAYG alone doesn't allow tethering, you have to specify the AIO15 tariff to gain tethering.

TECHNICALLY, only the 'One Plan' offers tethering, all other AYCE bundles don't, but it still works and I haven't been restricted yet.

will this be on sale on the 28th Sept then or 21st? in UK?

Just read an article and says that 21st is US date

Officially, the £15 pm tariff doesn't permit tethering.

I know people do/have done it, but you run the risk that they will prevent it at any moment.

This.

You can probably get away with it if you don't go crazy, but I happily pay the £25 because I tether to a tonne of stuff, easily consuming 10gb+ a month.

So do you think this will work?

1. Buy my 32GB iPhone 5 from Apple sim-free.
2. Get a contract with Orange.
3. When it becomes available, transfer to EE for 4G.

Good or bad idea?

just replace number 2 with getting a sim only deal, then when 4G becomes available just get a contract with EE.

Hi guys,

Just had a look on the Apple site and it seems to suggest you can only get a payg phone on O2, Vodafone or 3... are they not doing the contract phones this time?

My contract ended 9 months go and I've been waiting for the iPhone 5 since then and would prefer to get it from an Apple store.

I did investigate that at the time but I wasn't sold on the unlimited texts (not a big texter). 02 speeds are also bit iffy round here and couldn't be bothered to do the goody bag thing every month. But yeah, a very good deal nevertheless.

Anyway, I think I might hold off from the iP5 until there's confirmation with all the LTE frequency compatibilities etc. Can live with the 4s for now but I reckon the missus might be in need of an upgrade pretty soon from her 2.x android. ;)

o2 have appalling data speeds ime. Had to suffer them for 2 years on contract, never again.

Woohoo! Just preordered my iPhone 5!

Carphone Warehouse guarantee launch day availability if you pay a (refundable!) £29 deposit. The deal is only available over the phone til midnight though.

And yes, I did ask some very searching questions of the person I spoke to. To be fair, she had all the answers.

Woohoo! Just pre ordered my black 16gb iPhone 5 as well!

The iPhone is now guaranteed for delivery on or before launch day!

As Garry stated, Carphone Warehouse just took a £29 deposit from me that will be refunded when they call back in a few days time to select what contract I want and pay for it.

Thanks for letting me know about this!

unlocked all the way for me, works out cheaper over 2 years doing it this way with simplicity tarrif from o2

I was intrigued by your comment so I checked the o2 simplicity website and I'm a little confused. I pay around £35 a month with 3 which gives me all the free calls and texts I need plus unlimited data. Unless I'm reading or understanding it wrong you can choose their 2gb data and unlimited texts and calls for £25 a month but then you still have to fork out the massive cost to buy the phone offline. Is that your understanding too?

i'm currently on a O2 sim only plan, its a 1 month simplicity plan...

I'm considering buying the iphone 5 from apple, but not sure if o2 will still be the cheapest sim only deal! Hmmm anyone considering the same? My phone is a personal business line, so need to be able to call up the provider easily if I have issues!

My original plan was to go get the iphone 5, and get a nano sim for my current number, then go looking at sim only deals to see what i can find!

But the 850Mhz band is different from the 800Mhz band that is being auctioned off by Ofcom.

850Mhz (LTE band 5) is 824-849Mhz for uplink, 869-894Mhz for downlink. 800Mhz (LTE band 20) is 832-862MHz for uplink, 791-821 MHz for downlink. Although the uplink part has some overlap, the downlink doesn't. And spectrum immediately above 862 is reserved from other uses.
