Hi, I am getting a US Bank card for the same purpose to use in the UK. I wondered if you knew about international transaction fees, I'm assuming that if your bank charges them the you pay them like with any normal debit/credit card transaction?

I travel a lot for work, so most of the cards I use have 0 international transaction fees. My AMEX Delta and CapitalOne Venture are intl-fee free. They do, however, carry a yearly membership fee which I'm sure makes them plenty of money.

It is just the same as using a UK debit/credit card overseas to pay for things in another currency - there is always a fee!! You are right, it is not really a good idea but useful to have if you are visiting the US because you can use the US card there and not get charged any fees!:)

Yep true about the latter point I suppose - I am lucky to have an old UK credit card that has 0% spending fee abroad. They don't offer it any more and are always trying to get me off it but I'm keeping it!

I'm in Wimbledon and have been using my Apple Watch with apple pay at various shops around the village. (I'm American, so I have apple pay setup with my US banks). It's pretty slick, people are loving it.
Wait until you get the bill with the Dollar based card and transaction fees and lousy exchange rates.

2GBP at Carluccios converted to 3.02USD on my Amex, no other transaction related fee. That puts me at 1.51, not bad at all, that's market rate.

I think Amex is different to cards issued by US banks - I definitely get a charge if I use my Bank of America debit card to pay in sterling.

Just been reminded that Cineworld cinemas also use Passbook for their tickets.

Pay for tickets using the Cineworld app, add that to Passbook and the attendant scans your Watch before you see the film.

Ace.

I have booked into Cineworld to see Avengers tonight just to use Passbook on the watch. My local cinema is Odeon...

Forget twisting your arm out paying for goods
I'm waiting for retina scan, now that's the future !

I paid at Starbucks twice yesterday. I was so nervous it wouldn't work and would look like an idiot, but it all went well! The girls on the till we're very impressed, I must have been their first.

I feel passbook has been neglected in the UK, the possibilities are endless, especially here in London.

I went to mcdonalds yesterday to get one McChicken just so I could try ApplePay with my watch. Worked like a charm and the girl behind the counter was like "what just happened"? Hahaha I loved it.

Just went into town and paid with the watch passbook app at Greggs and Starbucks. Worked flawlessly, although the Greggs guys seemed to need to switch payment method on their til which one of them didn't know how to do.

Just surprising how few retailers (i.e. Only these two!) are a) supporting loyalty cards on iOS b) integrating them with Passbook and c) allowing for payments to be made via them.

Here's hoping we see Apple Pay in the UK at some point...

Do you need a registered US Apple account or can you just add it to your UK phone?

Using Passbook!

Greggs has an app that allows people to buy food and drink at its bakeries, so I topped up my Greggs account with £10, added the Greggs account to Passbook and used my Watch to pay instead of my phone.

Feel amazing. Like actually buzzing. Felt a bit nervous as there was a queue of people behind me and I wasn't sure it was going to work, but it did. Oh boy did it work.

So now I need to know: What other shops and restaurants over here use Passbook?

I know Starbucks does, and Subway uses it for its loyalty points scheme, but who else? Is there a list somewhere?

List of UK participating retailers that use Passbook apps (that we've discovered so far)

Cineworld - tickets bought through the Cineworld app are added to Passbook for scanning
Costa Coffee - loyalty card only
Greggs - pay for food/drink
Starbucks - pay for food/drink
Subway - loyalty card only

Can't wait to get my replacement now, pay for my steak bakes with my watch, yussssssss

Paying for stuff with Watch is cool, but I'll be super excited when I can use it instead of my Oyster

Yes!

It's a real shame the Apple Pay capabilities are taking so long to come to the UK. What with the UK always towing the US line, you would've expected immediate compliance lol!

Yeah, I need to try out Starbucks too.

After this morning's experience, I can't wait for Apple Pay to come out over here.

In 2019.

I can't even use it at Starbucks here in Japan. There's been IC based payment for the longest time, but it's all fragmented and a mess to be honest. In a land where ATMs close at night and have holidays, I can't imagine apple pay ever happening.

You're admitting to eating Greggs food ?!?!

You just need supported (U.S.) banks/cards. Set your region to u.s. and you see the option, but it will only accept us cards, I believe.

Tried to use my Costa loyalty card on my Watch yesterday, ended up opening the Camera app by accident then the watch stopped responding...

Had to sheepishly get my phone out as the person at the till wondered why on earth I was swiping furiously at my wrist...

Oh well, I think that one goes down to user error :p It's worked fine before and is a lot more convenient so it won't stop me using it.

The subway app doesn't work on passbook for me. I tried to add it to passbook last weekend but it comes up with an error message saying you need to be connected to the internet.

I sent them an email and got a reply saying they are waiting for Apple to fix it.

Is anyone able to add it to passbook as a new pass?

I had that when I tried to add mine yesterday. I just kept force closing the app and trying again and eventually it worked and I now have the card in Passbook - "waiting for Apple to fix" my arse.

Thanks, just done this, after three attempts it works!

This is what subway said:

Thank you for your email. We've found that there's an issue with Apple's Passbook application, which is causing the connection issue. We are awaiting improvements from Apple to correct this. Please try again in a few days.

In the meantime, please continue to scan your SUBCARD directly from your app.

Please let me know if you require anything further and I hope you continue to enjoy SUBWAY(r).

Kind regards,
