Maybe the reporter asked someone what they like to do after the pubs shut and they replied "coke and something six inches long".

An easy mistake to make :)

Oh hells no. Everyone around my way seems to quietly like it but you'll never catch me in there. I've got a good enough diet and I don't eat out much, so when I go into town I'll grab a Macdonalds.

A little off topic but I've been slightly underweight and trying to gain it for the last 7 years. Earlier this year I decided to eat more Macdonalds and it worked. It's not all bad. But lots of folk seem to abuse it.

Dude, there are healthy ways to put on weight and unhealthy ways to put on weight. Eating more McDonald's is an UNhealthy way to put on weight.

Lethal

Tried. I doubled what I ate, even took weight gain suppliments (Creatin? or something). Nothing worked. But at the time I was walking to and from college which probably kept the weight off.
It hasn't affected any performance though. Blood pressure is the same etc. I wasn't even having the most calorie loaded food there, not sure why it just stuck to me.

Subway, every single "restaurant" has the most god awful smell in the world, food is acceptable but I refuse to go inside.

Subway or any fast food trendy. I just threw up in my mouth a little™.

I don't know, there's a few "trendy" fast food places.

If I recall correctly, there have been periods in our nation's history when both Jack in the Box and White Castle were hipster go-to spots.

There's virtually no nutrition to be found anyway in Subway's ever-so-resistible fare - never-mind the fact that the company seems to be run by chimpanzees from what I've observed.

I have never seen anyone hang out at a Subway. Dunkin Donuts yes, Subway no.

Woo! Jack In The Box!

Subway's not horrible but I've had better sandwiches. I want to go work there though, it's not too hard, and it's good pay.

I only get Subway food if I am nowhere near a good mom and pop grinder place.

I wouldn't mind trying a Subway at some point. Just doesn't seem like good value compared to a Boots Meal Deal, where the sub-of-the-day is like £2.99 or something? A whole Meal Deal is £2.99 and they're very good. (a shame Boots realised that and upped the price for a bit)

Most of the meat is that processed deli crap, which is usually the lowest quality protein meat you can find.

It's still healthier than a lot of the typical restaurants that most people eat at. If health was my main concern, I'd take a cold Subway sandwich over the food at most restaurants.

I'll admit though obviously it's still not as obscenely horrid as CrackDonalds and Taco Hell.

Exactly. On the other hand, McDonalds doesn't have to be as unhealthy as most people claim it is. The Quarter Pounder burger isn't so unhealthy that it should be avoided. People who complain would be willing to have meals at restaurants that are worse for them, and it's Ok because it's a sit-down restaurant, and they pay more.

I have heard it said that the food in all the sit-down copy-cat chain restaurants (Applebees, Chili's, TGI Fridays here in the US) is often just as poor nutritionally as the fast food shacks and the portions are indeed that much more.

I'm wondering the same thing, are Subways even open that late? I know in the States, the ones in Walmart Supercenters are open 24/7, but why would anyone want to go there after a night of partying.

There's a 24-hour walmart near my college in the states, and while we've never been there after partying I have been there a few times between 2 and 4am. :D It's creepy as hell being that it's deserted, but that also means we're spared the presence of the typical wal-mart clientele. Typically our late night excursions are in quest of cheap and greasy microwavable food...which is in abundance, though once we did buy a gallon of hot pink paint at 3am.

Better than Mac D, BK or Wimpy - Yes
Restaurant, trendy - No

I will definitely choose a Subway when I need lunch but if it is late at night, nothing beats a Kebab! Of course, health is out of the window by that point!

Have you ever tried to eat a doner kebab sober? It is horrible :D

There's a lot of bad kebab places, but I found a really good one in town that makes dangerously delicious 'royale kebab frites'. Need to ration them carefully though as they're about a full day's meal.

If there's a Planet Sub around you, go there. They're so much better than Subway or Quiznos. There's a Planet Sub across the street from where I work, so I'm there often and I never get sick of it.

I think the chain might only be in the midwest though

Hah, you guys have those over in STL now. Cool. Me and my workmates had Planet Sub today for lunch. They started in Lawrence Kansas (the lone hippy college town of Kansas) under the name Yello Sub... they've been around here in Kansas City for awhile... guess they're expanding. Their sandwiches are orders of magnitude superior to the unbridled foolishness peddled from the likes of Subway.

The Subway in my area closes about 9/10pm, it's open fairly late on fridays and saturdays though I've been there at around 1am before cause the que for the MCDonalds drive trhu was to long.

Then again when I goto one of my mates Uni campus or something the Subway round there are open alllllll night, ALOT of uni student do goto Subway after a night out or something just cause it's cheap and everyone thinks its healthy etc
