You also forgot the: "I already have an iPhone 3G and plan to sign another contract with O2 to get a 3GS." option.

That's what I'll be doing. Taking out a new contract is easier than battling with O2 to modify or let you out early of your existing.
O2 have a policy that they let you out of your contract in the last month of the contract. It's always been like that and, I assume,
will always stay like that.

That's a very good point - if you end your contract early you pay the same but don't get the benefit of the contract. At least this way you can pass the phone on to someone else to use while you use your new 3GS. You also only need to pay the minimum contract rate £30 each month rather than paying (eg. £210) all at once.

Another good reason why O2 should have a reduced rate for early contract termination. They get the money up front and have less utilisation of their network. I would say somewhere around 50-60% of remaining contract revenue would be a fair "cost" recovery rate.

Craig.

I Don't own an iPhone and didn't justify the 3G update last year good enough reason to buy one and this update isn't less significant. This rate I won't own an iPhone until 2011. I'm annoyed at Apple for doing little to resolve the crap camera situation - 3 megapixel is not an improvement its still crap - I would of settled for 5. O2 charging so muchfor the 3GS ON Payg is also ridiculous. I can't comprehend how a phone can cost more than a laptop.
One more thing, are apple going to keep adding letters to the iPhone's name or can't they just call every new iPhone "iPhone" and put (3G) on the end to let you know its the third generation. Will the next one be called iPhone 3GS2?

3GS Pricing Fiasco

I sold my 1st Gen iPhone and put the money towards my upgrade fee for the 16Gb 3G which meant that I only had to fork out £50 I think. Even if I could upgrade to a higher spec (i.e. the 32Gb) I would still have to fork out £274.23 on an 18 month contract. Firstly, it's too much to pay when locking yourself into a further 18 months contract and secondly it ain't gonna happen because I have to wait until next year and then pay full price (£274.23) and lock myself into a further 18 month contract and all for a phone that will be close to its shelf life.

Well done O2, cake or death? Better figure out what to do with all those iPhone 3GS that will be lingering in the old O2 towers warehouse this time next year.

p.s. I still enjoy my 3G, will talk to it anyway, have bought a magnifying glass for the lens and will stick a compass on it.

The iPhone, whether it be the original iPhone, iPhone 3G or the new iPhone
3GS is a true mobile substitute for your Apple laptop, or desktop computer.

IMO, with all it's functionality, they have a certain right to charge what they
are doing.

So it sounds like O2 is keeping most of us 3G users without subsidizing another phone, a win for O2.

It also sounds like Apple won't be moving too many 3GS phones in the UK as there is such a large base of 3G phones that will be keeping what they've got.

Here's hoping that the next iPhone is a major upgrade. To tell the truth, I'm not too bothered about keeping my 3G. No real 3GS lust here.

I'm sure the 3GS will sell just fine to new subscribers

I read on O2's twitter that they were treating iPhone customers in the same was as regular customers so no special upgrade plans for us...

My contract doesn't end until May 2011 so it looks like I'll have two refreshes to skip before I can upgrade :B

Wirelessly posted (Mozilla/5.0 (iPhone; U; CPU iPhone OS 3_0 like Mac OS X; en-us) AppleWebKit/528.18 (KHTML, like Gecko) Version/4.0 Mobile/7A341 Safari/528.16)

Unless I win the lottery I'll be keeping my 3g.
Was thinking about the payg option but nah!!!

Much as I'd like the improved camera and video functionality, it's not worth paying the upgrade fee for. I'll wait until my 2 year contract runs out. Not complaining - I knew what I let myself in for when I signed the contract, and didn't expect the upgrade to be treated any differently to any previous phone I've had.

Don't forget that with Windows Mobile, with very few exceptions, significant updates to the OS required you to buy a new phone when your contract expired. I strongly appreciate Apple's efforts to make the new OS available to existing owners. I appreciate it even more that they're making it available for free. After all, it wouldn't be difficult or unwarranted for them to charge for it.

I won't be upgrading my 2G. I just won't pay an 87% price increase on principle.

I'll also be taking my iPhone tariff off and putting the phone on PAYG or Simplicity, reducing O2's revenue from me by about £30 a month. This stupid attempt to grab money will cost *them* twice as much now.

I might have paid that much for a twelve month contract... but definately not 18.

If I sign on a new contract for 3GS and be given a second O2 number
while keeping my existing O2 number (in which the contract will end in Jan 2010), can I cancel the original contract in Jan 2010 but move the original number to the second contract?

i.e. I wish to keep my original O2 number....

is that possible?

You forgot:

"I am waiting for O2 to offer a deal for existing iPhone customers, otherwise I will wait until my contract expires, but then I might as well keep my 3G and put it on a rolling simplicity contract for £19.58 per month"

Not very snappy, I know, but it needs to be an option...

Exactly the same here. 3.0 is the big upgrade as far as I'm concerned and I get that anyway - I'll save some beans on a cheap contract when this one expires (Jan) and have a look at the 4th iteration in a year's time.

I'd expect O2 to be offering 3Gs handsets for free some time in 2010 - several of my friends on O2 were given free 3G handsets in the last few months.

The poll says it all to O2.

That's hilarious! And very true. I don't think this phone is going to fly off the shelves the way the 3G did.
