There are some internal differences ... Ultra has a larger battery, water temperature gauge, better water proofing, more speakers/louder for telephone, bits for brighter screen, and better gps. SourceFor a watch that has the same imterals I am cheap so with a base series 8 GPS. I understand that the Ultra but it doesn’t fit my lifestyle so series 8 is fine for me.
Who says you can’t use some paint thinner to remove the orange anodizing on the side button and dial?Went for the Ultra but left with the S8. The orange makes the Ultra…ugly to me. If they have just the titanium without the orange or even make the buttons black. I prefer neutral colors such as black or silver. I don’t even get cellular options because I hate the red circle in the crown.
I feel like I’m wearing a digital futuristic version of a divers watch, it’s bulky and rugged.Love the Ultra, could never go back.

I can't speak for the running part. We don't have a lot of traffic where I am, so the pausing on a run isn't a big deal. On the bike, I can say it only takes me putting a foot down, and it's paused. Pick foot back up and clip into the pedal, and it's going again. To those who have an Ultra: Does the better GPS also lead to faster auto pause/resume detection than in the 7/8?
The standard models use to take a second or two until a run pauses. Wondering if that's faster / more accurate with the Ultra...
And that’s faster than for series 7 or 8 in case you have/had them?I can't speak for the running part. We don't have a lot of traffic where I am, so the pausing on a run isn't a big deal. Had a 6 before the Ultra. Can't say I truly noticed the difference, but probably a hair faster on the Ultra. I can say with certainty that the GPS tracking itself is markedly better. There's one section in particular where I run sometimes that winds up and down this parking lot 4 times. The 6 was fairly accurate, but struggled to tell exactly where I was within the parking lot, especially when going back and forth. The Ultra tracks it to the T with zero issue. Now, I'm not winning any races, nor receiving awards for faster splits than yesterday by any stretch, but it's good to know that with better GPS comes better accuracy in numbers. Certainly helpful in the long run.And that’s faster than for series 7 or 8 in case you have/had them?
