I thought that is what we wanted? Don't we want Apple to rule the world and all others to go by the wayside so we can feel superior and high five each other? Then since we are all so different for choosing Apple, one day soon we'll all be the same. What goes around comes around.

WHAATTT!! When that happens, Apple would be a bloated company .. which could have been lazy, bad, expensive and .. bloated :p It's called monopoly in case you don't notice. And when that happens, shoot happens too.

I love using Apple, doesn't mean I want other companies to get off the grid and going down. I want other companies to innovate, not just imitate what Apple has done. And so far, they're still disappointing.

And what do you like about Steve Jobs, huh? All of us admire him because he started a company from his garage, having up and down, struggle and innovate with great ideas .. not being a lazy bloatware person in describe of Steve Ballmer, big .. dominant .. but bloated as I said earlier.

I'm really happy to see not all MacRumors user are typical blind Apple fanboy. With a few exception :rolleyes: ... most of them just using Apple as part of life product, you don't drive iCar, you don't keep your food on your iRefrigerator, you don't build your house using iRoof, iWall? :eek: .. Apple is just a great computer ... and when something bad happens with their product, I don't mind to criticize them. Be mature, would you?

I'd buy an Air if I could get the OS (which is useless to me) discounted out, Ctrl/Meta/Alt in the right order, and the Escape key enlarged... but as it is, the Air is basically only good for running one OS... OS X, upon which I can't be productive.

Looking forward to the UX21. And hoping I'll be able to get *its* OS (which is useless to me) discounted out as well.

Out of the box Ubuntu runs well on just about any PC between one and six years old, but anything newer will usually have to rely on a volunteer to write a driver for it, and if it hasn't made it into the main repositories yet you'll end up in the Ubuntu forum asking why your wifi card doesn't work, and someone will point you to what you need.

The generic drivers for any given manufacturers' hardware generalize quite well to new products. This is slowly becoming less of an issue.

Linux does have a lot more market penetration in the enterprise/business setting compared to the home consumer market.

If growth in that sector continues due to the inhibited economy causing cost benefits for using Linux, those that use Linux at work will become more likely to use it at home.

Together with Android popularity, I think it is possible for Linux to see a lot of growth in the future. Especially in markets where both Linux in business and Android are more popular, such as in some European markets.

Ultrabook? I'll give my sincere & humble personal opinion on the "Ultrabook".

ULTRABOOK MY ASS

Out-of-the-box experience with (several) WINDOZE laptops so far
* decrapify
* windoze update
* past half a day updating Service Packs Hot Fixes Drivers Bios Whatever, finally machine is ready... NOT, because some whatever either needs reinstall or caused conflict or was redundant or whatnot
* FINALLY, after much patience, and after installing needed software, I still have a machine that a) randomly does not wake up from sleep b) randomly does not go to sleep d) randomly does not hibernate e) randomly does not shut down without long power button presses until OFF f) randomly takes ages to start / wake up

---

Out-of-the-box experience with Macbook Air 11" 1st gen:
* turn on
* use

Wakes / Sleeps in seconds, reboots in seconds, built like a tank, everything thought out in detail (packaging, charger size, cord wrap, magsafe), plays half-life 2, runs Windoze in Parallels for when its needed, updates are fast and issue-free, overall I can bear with quirks and live a comparatively frustration-free computing experience. Would buy, not twice, but twenty times over.

IMHO:
can not care less for Ultrabooks.

Wow !
Using computers seems really hard for you ! You seem so confused.

Did that mean ol' Windows Machine call you names too :confused:

Hey .. you sure about that? Out of the box .. sometimes OSX has to be updated too, it doesn't have Aperture, iWork or Adobe installed. I had a failing Macbook Air out of the box, severe backlight bleeding I have to return it and get a good one.

Out of the box my MBA can't play flac, you have to install something like mplayerx or vlc, it can't play some video format too. Everyone has different needs, so custom setup and hassle on the beginning is NORMAL for both PC and Mac.

So what do you mean by turn on and use? You mean use for browsing internet, listening to music? FYI Windows 7 can do those tasks too out of the box :rolleyes:

"It just works" is just Apple's marketing slogan for blind fanboy. Sure OSX is better, but saying Windows is totally bad .. wow that's bold .. You know Sony makes ultrabook priced $3000? You may feel proud buying an expensive Macbook Air. But there are more elite options out there if you have the cash

That image!

Thanks for the picture. It answers many questions all in one gulp. To my eye, it seems that the non Airs are pretenders more than killers.

I invented the word Appleonian and it is NOT dumb. And it isn't used in defense.
Whatever the reason may be there are 2 things that it is not. It is neither clever, nor is it witty. Dumb works in this scenario.

Secondarily and more on topic, people tend to forget that not everyone is happy excepting the "norm" and just running Windows. While I won't dispute hardware facts, and claims. I will say that on a personal use basis Mac OSX is more visually appealing and quintessential, than MS Windows as of late.

So the article says that they want to test the water, and macrumors prints a headline that it's due to the macbook air, and then the headline becomes a fact to most reading here, when it's actually an opinion. I mean, I've read a while back about low supplies related to this, but here, it all revolves around the macbook air.

Reminds me of the head line of Windows 8 being inspired by the iPhone, and the video showed a completely different interface. It turns out that it was probably the opinion of a friend of whoever wrote the article.

Judging from your signature, I wouldn't expect you to post anything less. After all this is MAC rumors, not MS Windows rumors. Almost like going over to phandroid and complaining about the Android bias.

Secondarily, while the UI of Windows 8 might look different than that of iOS, it's no secret that Apple developed the first truly great finger/touch friendly OS.

quintessential ?!
Really ?

The macbook air is a great machine but it wouldn't be possible without Intel's technology. Other manufacturers are just taking advantage of Intel's chips to make high performance ultraportables. Right now, if you want a good ultraportable, there's not many choices, and the air is the best choice by far. But in the near future, there'll be many more choices. BTW, Apple isn't the innovator, Intel is. Just so you know...

what sucks about ultrabooks and the macbook air is that the graphics chips in them SUCK so bad. Why would I want an i7 if I can't pair it with a nice GFX chip? All you can do with these things is browse facebook and type crap but why would anyone pay $1000 to do that instead of getting a $200 netbook?

They need to create external video cards for these kinds of laptops using thunderbolt type technologies so the CPU makes sense and has a purpose.

Right now, if you don't play new PC games, Intel's integrated graphics is fine for you. A majority of people don't need a really good graphics chip. I suspect that dedicated graphics chips will become external. and in the future, you can buy it as an extra peripheral.

Because $200 netbooks are utter garbage, even for simple browsing. An iPod Touch is a superior computing device. Maybe you should compare to a decent product. I'm sure there must be a Lenovo laptop that isn't utter crap for under $1000.

Conversely, a majority of people do not need ultra mobile computers. Why so much fuss about the mobility? Unless you are a college student, what is the benefit of having ultra mobile laptop? Modern phones can do just fine for mobile e-mail handling, facebook, internet browsing etc. Why to sacrifice performance for the sake of mobility at all?

Just so you know, there's a reason Ultrabooks have been very problematic for other manufacturers. It's Apple's supply chain management tactics. Apple has used economies of scale to great effect. It's actually a simple concept-buy large quantities of components to get the best possible pricing deals.

This is why competing tablet manufacturers have run into so much trouble. Apple has the ability to single-handedly create component shortages. Apple buys up massive quantities of components and secure excellent deals on them. As a result, there is either no supply remaining for competitors or there is such a major shortage that competitors pay through their nose for components, which squeezes their margins.

We're at that point where we don't have to sacrifice very much performance for portability. A few years ago, you can begin to use a laptop as a desktop replacement. Now, you can use an ultraportable as your main computer. The technological progression is that great. I only see uses for really high performance computer for specialized uses, such as gaming, encoding, video editing, etc. For general purpose uses, you just need a good performance computer, which now can be done with ultraportables.

Give credit where it is due. As I see it, Apple has earned every ounce of their success. Are you trying to say that Apple succeeded through underhanded/illegal means?

A $200 netbook can do just about anything a macbook air can do because the macbook air can't do anything extraordinary. It's just a fancy netbook and everyone knows it.

Also a netbook is probably 5-10x faster than an iPod touch.

Previously, this was true. But now the air performs very well. And can do just about anything the vast majority of people needs it to do, keeping in mind that its not a powerhouse, nor is it supposed to be. I give a lot of the credit to Intel, and not Apple.
