Mine has the issue from time to time as well, I have a feeling it may well be due to whatever else is running on the iPhone at the time as simply pressing Home doesn't exit out of the app completely, to do that you need to hold home down until the app closes so it could just be a system resources issue.

To those experiencing SMS lag, are any of you using 3rd party apps with 1.1.1? If not now, did you have 3rd party apps installed prior to updating to 1.1.1?

If any of you with the slowdown are running 3rd party apps, try installing the Terminal app and BSD subsystem, then running a "ps -xcu" to see if there are any rogue processes stealing clock cycles. I've heard that the ssh server installed during the jailbreak/hack can sometimes run in the background and use more processor than it needs to. :)

I posted the OP while running stock 1.1.1, no apps, within a couple of days of its release (I've since downgraded). Others also reported experiencing the lag before jailbreaking was available, so I have a feeling SSH is probably not the culprit.

I asked if people were running 3rd party apps in the hopes that if no one getting the lag was running them, it might mean that jailbreaking somehow fixed the lag. Wishful thinking I know...

I really want to upgrade back to 1.1.1 but I text a fair amount and 5 seconds delay every time I open the app is unacceptable.

Ugh..Today I waited almost 10 seconds for a simple SMS to show up. And for some reason when I get a new text and go to open it, it opens up the previous message (from a different person) instead of the new message. I thought that was fixed in 1.1.1. O well.

Lag is getting really bad here.

I think there are a few bugs in 1.1.1 that need worked out. This delay is one of them. Another issue I have with 1.1.1 in SMS is sometimes the keyboard click sound gets stuck and will click about 10 times or so even though I only press one key. I also have an issue with the main toolbar always telling me that my iPod is playing when it isn't. I am sure Apple is aware of these issues and is working on a fix that will hopefully be released very soon. I think these bugs are normal considering 1.1.1 is the first time Apple has really added a bunch of things to the phone in one update. I'm sure as time goes on the updates will get better and contain less bugs.

i would have to agree with this assumption.

since upgrading to 1.02 i've had safari crashes and ipod crashes. can't seem to use the two at the same time.

Have the same issue here. Got my phone replaced yesterday due to the negative black issue, that phone didnt have this problem. The new one does, and the screen also seems to be lacking in contrast in a way. I don't know how to explain it but everything seems soft and not sharp like my other two iPhones have been before this one. Different thread though...I have the same SMS issue. No mods.

Hmm. Anyone who IS using 3rd party apps and getting the SMS delay?

I am glad that I am not the only one with this problem.

Once I went up to 1.1.1 it got extremely slow to the point of 5-6 seconds before the text messages would come up.

I'm noticing a significant lag going into the 'settings' area of the phone..not as bad as SMS but a real lag.
Do you have a lot of apps open? You might want to press the Home button for like 4 seconds anytime you have a program open if you have a lot of them open. It will quit that program and free up some memory.

I am also having the issues mentioned above where on the main toolbar it says that the ipod is playing but it is not.

I then go into Ipod, click play and then pause and it goes away. No big deal but annoying enough.

I'm running 1.1.1 and have the same issue. Sometimes if the phone is waking to the SMS screen I'll get a black screen with just the status bar on the top for 5 - 10 seconds before the SMS screen loads. This is definitely a new problem since 1.1.1.

I'm looking forward to an update soon with a fix for this.

Well I found a fix for this, if you uninstall the SSH,SFTP,SCP install from independence, the issues goes away after you reboot the phone!
Pain in the Arse though.....

Glad you found a fix for you. Many people who are experiencing this did not use iNdependance and do not have SSH, SFTP or SCP installed. Some don't have any mods at all.

I did read from one user somewhere though that after upgrading to 1.1.1, if you don't choose to restore from a backup that the delay does not occur. You will lose your photos, notes and settings in the process. I haven't tried it, but it kinda makes sense.
