Hello all,

I am having an issue searching within Settings on iOS 11.2.1 on an iPhone X that was set up from an iCloud backup of an iPhone 8 that is on 11.2.1.

Everything has gone fine with the backup/restore with the exception of being able to search within the Settings app... a really minor gripe in the grand scheme of things but I would like to get to the bottom of it since I like searching in there.

The only search results that are showing in the Settings app are the apps installed from the App Store. For example, I can search for "OneNote" and it will show in settings but if I search for "Brightness," "FaceTime" and such I don't get any results.

Any ideas? I would hate to have to wipe everything and start over. This is in contrast to my iPad, which shows every settings search result twice on 11.2.1.

Any ideas appreciated... only thing Apple support could come up with was to start over for the 2nd time in 6 hours.

Thanks!

Did you check settings>Siri and search>Settings?

This kind of thing is also discussed at https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/search-not-working-in-settings-app.2093798/

Yes, the settings were all correct. For kicks I restored from a backup and the issue persisted. I ended up setting up as a new device and then everything worked as planned. The ironic thing is that my iPad has the opposite issue and was also set up as new. All of the results in the settings search are duplicated on the iPad and have been since iOS 11. Not sure what happened there.

I’m having the same issue using my X.

Searching in the Settings on my iPhone X shows every resultat also twice (same on your iPad...). The regular iPhonesearch (swip down on homescreen) works fine. I didnt restore an backup; "clean" iPhone X. So a little buggy... also the batteriestatus (usage and standby are the same on my iPhone X).

After backing up my phone, wiping it clean and restoring from a back up didn’t work, I went to Apple Community and found the easy solution:

Settings>Siri&Search and turn on/off search for messages. All working again.

'reset all settings' fixed the problem for me

You’re right. After posting this, that’s actually what it took for me to search settings too. When I bought the X, I restored from my 6s, that had zoom enabled. I had that for a bigger keyboard. Since the X doesn’t have the zoom setting, but the back caused the X to start up with Zoom Enabled, I think that was causing the “hiccup”.

[doublepost=1518699321][/doublepost]I have new iphone 8 with same issue. Changing setting to Siri and Search>Settings didn't help.

If you’re coming from an older iPhone, try resetting your phone completely. Don’t restore from a back up. That’s what it took for mine to finally work. Some of the settings on older iPhones don’t seem to translate well to the newest phones, and it seems to cause system issues.

Thanks. I am going from iphone 5s to 8. Verizon backed up old on iTunes and restored. After discovered the Settings/Search issue I got on Twitter DM with Apple and they were having me reset from iTunes but I have a slow network so it kept failing. I finally tried something I read about somewhere -- go to Settings/General/Language and change to a different language. Then change back. Amazingly it worked for me! I told Twitter about it and they gave me an idiotic reply about how it was a "settings" issue to which I responded (shouting) that it wasn't a "settings" issue, it is a BUG!!!!! They refuse to acknowledge it. Hope this solution works for other folks!

you’re so right. Glad it’s all good for you now. Enjoy the bigger phone. Now that the worst is behind you (fingers crossed), you can relax and enjoy a better UX moving from your 5s to the 8.

I had the same problem with my new iPhone 8 Plus. I went into Settings\General\Reset and then selected "Reset All Settings." That fixed it for me.

I can’t fix this problem, I have an iPhone 7. I just got this phone last night.

Not sure if this is still an issue for you, but here is how I managed to regain the search functionality in Settings, without any reset or clean start. I changed the iPhone language from General / Language & Region to a different one (one that I could actually understand - italian in my case). By doing so, a new keyboard has been added automatically by iOS, namely the italian keyboard. I then proceeded to change back the language to my initial one (English US). The italian keyboard remained in the General / Keyboard menu. I then manually removed the italian keyboard and, voila, the search in settings started to work. Just as a side note: the search in settings only works three menus deep (e.g. you cannot search for Reduce Transparency, since it is 4 menus deep: General / Accesibility / Increase Contrast / Reduce Transparency). Hope this helps.

I know this is an old post but just wanted to confirm that I had the same issues as I couldn’t search in settings.
However I changed the phone’s language to Arabic and then back to English again and all was good

Doing the language change above did the trick for me after upgrading from a 6s Plus to an Xs Max and restoring from backup. I am running iOS 12.1 beta 4.

I fixed this on my iPhone X by turning off the items in Siri settings and in Messages settings under Siri.. then turning them back on. After that it was immediately working again.

For me the settings search had stopped working after wiping and restoring the phone.. it had worked prior to that. Fortunately resetting the phone fixed all the crashes I had been having though.

I just ran into this after setting up a new iPad Pro on iOS 12.1.4 from a backup from an older iPad Pro. cindy999's solution involving changing the language fixed it for me.
