Probably a simple solution here that I am just missing...

I plugged my usb drive that has my stuff from my old windows machine into my mac pro and I can read and transfer my files to my internal HD's, but I can not write to it. The usb when plugged in was named back up.. maybe I did, but I dont remember ever labeling it Backup? The error message I get is "items can not be moved because backup can not be modified". I right clicked on the drive to change permission settings but couldnt find anything like that... your help is much appreciated.

Most likely, the drive is formatted in NTFS. You cannot natively write to NTFS in OS X without special software. You can try the special software (MacFUSE or Paragon) if you please; it may or may not be mature enough for your needs at this time.

Alternatively, if you still have free space on the external, use Disk Utility to create a partition and reformat the partition to a Mac-writable file system.
