It’s more of a combination of the phones being a bit larger, and the design change. I owned the XS for three years, and although it was a little bigger than I like, it was manageable. I tried the 12 twice, and returned it both times. The increase in size is what bothered me most.

That being said, you will learn to accommodate the phone over time, but I doubt you’ll be 100% happy with it if it’s a bit big for you to begin with.

I was always saying this! Yes the flat sides are nice but they’re not as comfortable to hold as the rounded edges of the 11 series

I agree, the rounded corners are nicer and makes the device feel more slim and ergonomic.
The advantage of 12 and 13 is that the grip becomes more stable and that device does not slip out of the fingers as easily.

The rounder edges prior to iPhone 12s were more ergonomic in holding the phones. But when it comes to capturing a quick photo with one hand, the flat edges do help to stabilise my hold better. I have large hands so I use my 11 Pro Max one-handed most times even when taking photo in landscape modes. But I always have the fear of it slipping from my hands. But I’ve tried the same on the 13 Pro Max and it gave me a lot of confidence when handling it with one hand.

Does you get used to holding the 13 (and 12, for that matter)? The flat edges, while aesthetically pleasing, doesn’t feel as ergonomic as the rounded shape of the 11 and older.

Please tell me what's "aesthetically pleasing" about square edges. Isn't it time to stop mouthing the blather of the baby sheep sucking on Apple's teet?

There's nothing objectively "pleasing" about square edges. Heck, I think the rounded edges of previous models were more "pleasing," both visually and tactilely. Certainly Apple itself did when it switched to them from the square edges of the iPhone 4/5.

And yes, to put it bluntly, the square edges are damned uncomfortable, particularly when the weight of your phones keeps going up every year.

It's a combination of size, edges and weight.
Maybe you should try a Mini. My problems with the edges went away, because it is so easy to hold.
Or try a case, but then it will get even heavier.

I agree, I prefer the rounded edges. They went with rounded edges with the 6 and 6 Plus precisely because it's more ergonomic. Apple execs said that themselves very publicly in interviews.

I find the Max phones to be particularly uncomfortable without a case due to those sharp edges digging into my palm.

I don’t disagree with you. But the flat edge design was lauded by posters and media alike.

I think it fits better in the hand, at least for the 12/13 Mini. With rounded edges, I could never go caseless with my phones because they were very hard to pick up off of a flat surface, and not as easy to hold onto- they were a slim bar of soap.

It's a matter of preference. I and others I know never liked the rounded edges, and when rumors came out well ahead of the launch of the 12 series with its return to squared edges, I was ecstatic- the phones look much nicer in my opinion that way.

Just to share another opinion on the square vs round. I’m in the round camp. I came from an 11 and was very much thought I’d prefer the square sides after seeing how great the new deisgn looked over the past year. However, it just doesn’t feel ergonomic.

Alternatively, the square sides are much better caseless. I couldn’t use the 11 caseless.

I found the square design to be uncomfortable at first but now after 2 weeks I really don't notice it any more but I still prefer rounded edges especially on the larger Max Pro phone

I’m team round aka team curves. The 5.8 iPhone X/XS/11 Pro were perfection for my hand. Even with the 11 Pro having some heft to it, you really didn’t feel the weight because the phone fit the hand so well.

Put it in a case, problem solved. ?

Don’t mind the flat edges, rock mine naked when at home, slap it in a case when outdoors.

I had a XS Max for 3 years and just switched for the 13 pro max. Honestly, yes its heavier but I get used to it but it does feel like a brick in my hands and it doesn't feel as premium as my XS Max to me. The XS Max was light, all-in glass design that was easy to use and hold. This one is okay to use, but in the bed its a little too heavy and the overall feel of the phone feel a little buiky to hold and because of that, less premium in my opinion.

Overall I don't know what I'll do. I'll probably keep it due to the awesome battery life but sincerely, the upgrade jump is not as high as I expected. The screen is practically as bright as my XS Max and I prefer the colours calibration of my old phone. The screen is bigger but I don't know if its just tailer or its also larger. The only thing I'm really satisfied is the increased RAM and battery, everything else don't really worth the upgrade cost IMO.

Its the first time I have a new phone and not really excited about it.

I had the 6+ and 8+ for the last 5-6 years and just purchased the 13 pro. It is indeed more uncomfortable, especially naked.

He can't. Aesthetics are almost entirely subjective and generally not something one can convince someone else of. At most, they can explain why they like X over Y, but not why you should find X aesthetically satisfying.

To him, the flat edges are (currently) more aesthetically pleasing if for no other reason than they're 'different' than previous models (more on this below).

I am in that same camp. And, after a couple of years with flat edges I may find rounded edges to be a welcome change when they return.

Isn't it time to stop mouthing the blather of the baby sheep sucking on Apple's teet?

What?

There's nothing objectively "pleasing" about square edges.

Of course not. Just like there's nothing objectively pleasing about round edges.

Heck, I think the rounded edges of previous models were more "pleasing," both visually and tactilely.

Fair enough.

Certainly Apple itself did when it switched to them from the square edges of the iPhone 4/5.

Honestly, as we get closer and closer to the final ideal of phones being nothing more than a slab of glass, there are fewer and fewer distinguishing features from a hardware perspective, with the contours of the edges being one of them. I imagine a big part of the motivation for going from round to flat to round to flat is just to help the phones look physically different from the previous few years of phones.

Flat edges do offer more internal volume than rounded edges, so there's that. But that speaks more to functional differences rather than super subjective aesthetic differences.

And yes, to put it bluntly, the square edges are damned uncomfortable, particularly when the weight of your phones keeps going up every year.

Bummer. I personally don't find them uncomfortable, and they do help me hold on to the phone with a bit more confidence. At worst, I am more 'aware' that I'm holding phone in contrast to the rounded edges of the older phones where that sensation of grip is more subtle.

As someone that never uses a case, the squared off edges offer a slight advantage for me, though I'm quite happy with either feeling in the hand.

I upgraded because of the flat edges.

It’s far easier for me to hold with my nerve issues.

I’m not sucking Apple’s teet. If they’d gone back to rounded edges, I would have held on to my 11PM. I specifically upgraded because of the flat sides and would have gotten the 12 but held out for the new phones, but I couldn’t hold the 11PM anymore, not even with a case. And honestly, I was never a fan of the rounded edges. Only phone with rounded edges I liked was the X. I’ve been waiting for the flat edge return for years, even before medically it made it easier for me to use.

It all matters what case u have on,otterbox symmetry is gonna hurt your pinky because of the hard plastic. Exchanged for a speck grip presidio 2 and it is 1000 times more comfortable. I have the standard 13 . Anything heavier would be a no go
