I am 18 and go out on the weekends here on campus and drink. Yes I get faded (drunk) but not to the point where I can't control myself and act like a fool. I just like the feeling of a buzz. Some people around here though drink way too much but thats the price you pay for going to a college labled as a party school. Like stated before, I do not think age is the problem here, many people I know my age are more responsible than some of the adults I have met in my life. The age should be 18. I don't know about other places, but I know that every year of grade school, we got counciled on the effects of alcohol and drugs. Obviously to some extent it worked, I would never drink and drive or drink so much I black/pass out. If people (parents, teachers, community leaders, etc.) just taught kids the rights and wrongs of life then being 18 and being able to buy alcohol would never be a problem. Look at Europe, my sister bought alcohol last summer (Italy and Spain) and she was 14 years old.

I've never had a drink before due to being underaged. The drinking age in the United States is too high, though. Kids in different countries drink at like... 14. I do think getting drunk is wrong. Espessially for a minor to get drunk. But drinking in general is not wrong for a teenager. Just be responsible about it.

Out of the many many many 15-18 I know, none would just buy beer to have one beer and chill. You do that when you are 21 as I have come to see. The kids who do drink underage buy to get drunk every time. Hence is why they buy cheap beer like Busch Light and Keystone Light (*yuck*)

That reminds me of this really foul wine over here 'passion pop' (haven't tasted it, but it smells sickly sweet) and costs $2 for 1.5Litres or something and I overheard some people my age (About 15) saying "hey mad there's this passion pop, we can get like 10 each and totally get pissed!". It's pretty sad really.. They don't even care about the flavour anymore  So in general, that statement is true, though there are responsible ones. I have never had a drink myself though, just occasional tastes..

illegal drugs...

I don't know if anyone house touched upon this but as a college student I know that its easier to get beer at school and yet when away from that atmosphere it is illegal narcotics such as weed that kids find easily accessible.

I disagree with the drinking age and I also don't think that our country is better off having weed as an illegal drunk (people in prison, money in the hands of cartels and terrorists).

But hey I am very liberal in my views and I do recognize that there are extremely bad outcomes for the lives of people who abuse any controlled substances. If the U.S.A. truley wants to practice what they preach then they should modify the drinking laws to allow for 19 year olds with valid college i.d.'s or 18 year olds with military i.d.'s to be able to buy beer (not hard liquor), just beer!

It's foul. Leave it well alone.

But seriously, have a drink every now and then, it's not going to kill you or anybody else if you have a beer or a wine or two. In fact, doctors recommend a glass of red wine a day saying that it's good for you. A glass of wine a day is not going to kill you.

As for the people saying "I don't drink cause I'm supposed to stay in control" do you really lack the eency bit of self control that you simply cannot allow a glass of wine to pass you lips for fear that somehow "The Devil" will possess you and make you do horrible things?

I drink fairly regularly, not heavily, usually a max of three or four drinks total in a session at the pub (I'm a big guy) and never drive after more than one drink. Most of the time I'll have one glass of wine or less often, a beer at night after dinner.

I have neither the cash nor the inclination to drink to excess but see the occasional drink as totally harmless - certainly not evil as the US would have me believe.

Back when I was underage I didn't really go to parties (bit of a loner in my teenage years - much better to be out of the home and at uni) but always had a drink at dinner. My folks taught me about wine, how it tastes, how to drink it etc. and introduced me to spirits and liqueurs as after-dinner drinks. It gave me an appreciation of alcohol rather than give it a air of the forbidden.

Alcohol is a part of our society - since they figured out how to make it it has permeated out civilisation and it always will do so no matter what people try to do.

IT IS UP TO PARENTS TO EDUCATE THEIR CHILDREN
Yes, keep an age limit on alcohol, 18 is perfect. But stop the whole "drinking is evil, mmkay" attitude and you will dry up most of the mystique held by kids towards it. If society treats responsible alcohol consumption as something ho-hum rather than something to be kept to darkened alleys and smokey bars the less kids will be willing to risk a lot to get to it.

Yeah, it's long and rambley but I don't care. I was just sick of the whole "Don't drink, it's bad" attitude.

Drink, just don't get drunk. Very easy to do.

Yeah good points chundles. I just haven't really acquired a taste for it yet...

This is very true for me too. Here at college I could easily get someone to buy me beer or any kind of alcohol. My roommate smokes weed on ocassions and he has the hardest time finding it out here. Going home though, it is the exact opposite. I find it funny not only the differences (college is 300 miles away from home in the same state) but the fact that illegal drugs are easier to get than alcohol.

Quiet, chyeld! Read the thread and learn some more about a lot of minors (such as myself)
Well then props to you all. Its good to see kids who actually do this. But growing up around a college and now actually going to college and knowing many people my age, I have rarely ever seen any one my age just having a beer or any kind of drink to relax. I do it every so often but from what I have learned, it is not common.

I'm 20 and have been chronically drunk for the past 6-7 years. Drinking age should be 18, no doubt about it.

For all who don't know; there is a reason the US drinking law is set at 21 years of age. If you don't know; do some research.
Whats the reason?

Hasn't done me any harm. Drinking since I was about 16 (drinking does not = drunk, I do have self-control unlike some others round here) and I'm fine.

I'm with you mate. Everything in moderation.

My cousin, who in her teenage years was quite a heavy binge drinker had an interesting theory about alcohol and the brain: drinking alcohol kill of all the stupid brain cells, leaving the smarter ones which then take prevalence. :D It worked for her! She ended up finishing school with good results, went to uni and got a degree. The amount of drinking she did was pretty damn stupid, but the thing is, she knew that and she soon got over it and turned into a responsible drinker.

This is a good (and unfortunate) example that the disease of alcoholism can start at any age. :( Alcoholism ultimately destroys not just your own life, but others as well by your actions - hopefully one day you can admit you have a problem and will seek help.

Self-control is definitely a virtue which many people lack - good for you. If I was there right now I'd take you out for a pint. ;) :D

hey that is a quote from Cheers by Cliff Calvin. It is his buffalo theroy. Here is the full quote.
"Well ya see, Norm, it's like this....A herd of buffalo can only move as fast as the slowest buffalo. And when the herd is hunted, it is the slowest and weakest ones at the back that are killed first. This natural selection is good for the herd as a whole, because the general speed and health of the whole group keeps improving by the regular killing of the weakest members. In much the same way, the human brain can only operate as fast as the slowest brain cells. Excessive intake of alcohol, as we know, kills brain cells. But naturally, it attacks the slowest and weakest brain cells first. In this way, regular consumption of beer eliminates the weaker brain cells, making the brain a faster and more efficient machine. That's why you always feel smarter after a few beers."

That's funny, because I'm pretty sure she made it up on her own. Good to know, she wasn't completely alone in her theory. :D
