It's nice to see them running so well, but as someone pointed out, these games are pretty old (like 3-4 years old).

Can you try with some of the modern games, like the DoW2 beta that just came out.

while I don't doubt that the mbp is a good gaming rig for a laptop, you didn't test any modern graphics-heavy games like Crysis, far cry 2, or fallout 3. Those games can be driven by ur rig at maybe medium or medium-high settings. Probably lower at that external's native resolution.

awesome! any news on nfs?
sorry mate hate those games :p

Yeahh i know mate, ive put far cry 2 and fallout 3 on the MBP since this post, not at home atm though so ill report back :D
And not quite 3-4 years - stalker is about 1 and a bit, TDU a year and a bit also, and l4d is brand new :D
Far cry 2 and fallout 3 run good (all settings at high , HDR with no AA) at the screens native res, dunno how it would do on the monitor at that res though :D

Got a 2.53 Unibody with the default 4GB DDR3 and the optional 7200RPM 320GB hard drive.
I use bootcamp with XP Pro 32 bit. With the latest drivers from Nvidia's website in Crysis I average 30FPS peaking around 50. This is with the res at 1024 by 768 and all settings on high, I have the shadows on low and the shaders on medium. If I set the shaders to low as well it peaks around 70 FPS! Well impressed for a laptop less then an inch thick, and it is wwwwaaaayyyyyy better then the Penryn 2.4 15 inch MB Pro I got in November 2007.

So yes impressive. I have Killzone 2 and Resistance Retribution to look forward to next though. Are their any amazing first person shooters coming out on the PC only to look forward to?

I'm gonna have that exact setup in a week or so.

The current PC I use for my sporadic gaming has the following specs :
Pentium4 3.2GHz
1GB RAM
NVIDIA GeForce 6600 (the 128mb version I believe - not sure)

How do you think the MacBook Pro is gonna compare ?

Very nice, once I eventually upgrade to an Intel Mac I will definately experiment. As for right now, my PBG4 runs Quake 4 on High Settings with Shadows which looks plenty good still imho. The Doom3 engine has aged very well.

Excuse the noob question, but how do you measure FPS? Is it a program you're using?

I'd like to see what I'm getting out of my MBP...

any updates to left4dead framerates with new drivers?

does anyone (including you SVD) have framerate info for L4D using nvidia's new drivers? specifically, FramesPerSecond during high traffic scenes, ie lots of zombies?

just got my MBP. CS:S runs fine through crossover. I'm still trying to figure out bootcamp so when I get windows on i'll let you know how it works. is there a good place to look for help on getting bootcamp going?

I'm now rocking Half Life 2 Episode 2, every setting is maxed out, the screen is at the display's native res and it play's absolutely fine. I'm not sure of the FPS but it must be around 50 or 40 I'd say.
It's just a shame about the game, sure it's the usual HL greatness, but the control of the vehicles is just plain stupid, you have to steer with the side step key's which for me are F and V, so I have to remap the key's every time I get in a car!!!! I think HL is starting to show it's age? I should of got the Orange Box for my PS3.

update please!!
Sorry, im a busy man :D ill update when i can.

Noope, not using the new drivers - my mbp works just fine, not running the risk of messing up the fans with new drivers... i can get you a framerate though, give me the resolution/setting and ill let ya know :)

Bootcamps eaaaasy, tell me what you want to know about it :)

I'm a bit sceptical over the HL2 & L4D. Not too sure about the other 2 games cause I'm not familiar with them.

First of all, from both of your screenshots in HL2, it's very clear from the jagged edges that AA is completely turned off.

Secondly, in L4D, there is no mention of the resolution, shaders, or the fps that you are getting. For all we know, you could have ran it at 640x480 with low shaders, or at 2048x1152 and getting 20 fps, which is still 'smooth' to you. High shaders on L4D will deal a huge performance blow to the 8600M/9600M GT. (drop from 60 to 30 fps for me)

Also you should try using the latest drivers from Nvidia. They officially support the MBP and they are the most stable drivers that I had so far.

Umm, first of all the Penryn MBPs were only released in 2008. Secondly, there shouldn't be a drastic difference in the 8600M GT and the 9600M GT, since they are both based on the same core. The 9600M GT is like a 8600M GT with slightly more transistors, smaller (built on 65nm process), and higher clock speeds. It's only about 15% more powerful.

Either that you have the older SR MBPs where the 8600M GT only has 128mb of VRAM, and this may have caused a performance slowdown in games which requires more VRAM. :p

No, they have AA on, trust me...
I might do a new screenshot of HL2, cause that one does look pretty ***** :(
Ive been playing ti recently with even better settings, fiddling round in control panel etc.

L4D res is up. as i have said, everything is at full, when i say that, i mean EVERYTHING. And its quite evident from the screenshot im not running it at 640x480 :S
And yes, i have no way to prove the FPS just yet, i need to get fraps, then replay every fecking game and screencap it, takes a while, i dont have a lot of time!

ALAS, i will tets it with COD4, and get some solid FPS ratings, with the screenies. And a new hl2 shot as well.

Hmm, I just ran HL2 and found out the problem. It seems like 6xAA doesn't work properly and is equivalent to turning it off completely. 4xAA looks better. I figure you should still get pretty good fps anyway even at 4xAA.

But umm, L4D. Still finding it really hard to believe. I remember it could only get around 30 fps on my uncle's iMac with a 7600 GT (pretty much the same as a 9600M GT), and that was at 1920x1200, shaders low and no AA. Type in cl_showfps 1 into the console, take a couple of screenshots, and post them here. :)

Well im afraid your going to have to start believing it, I just installed Left 4 Dead a few days ago through steam, and i can play it in maxed out, i mean MAXED out graphics settings, and it runs perfectly, smoothly, not even juddering, its absolutely amazing. (Thats on 1920 x 1200, with the 9600M Card). How can i take screenshots on Windows using my Macbook Pro keyboard while playing and i'll show you?

To see FPS in L4D, TF2, CSS, etc.

In console type just one of these options (they all do the same thing but have different visualizations) and then hit enter.

net_graph 1
net_graph 2
net_graph 3

On the bottom right hand corner you will see your FPS along with some connection settings.

I have vista 64bit installed via bootcamp and I can tell you no one is running L4D or TF2 with max settings and getting "perfect" and or "no jutter" from their mbp.

In L4D with everything turned down to low, 1440x900, I get about 65-80 fps depending on what's going on. If I max everything out I get about 20 fps just standing there and about 10 with zombies. Same goes for TF2.

And before some fool tells me my machine must be broken, it's not.

I have a unibody mbp 2.4, 4gb ram.
