20 FPS? Uh, that's not acceptable by any means.

20FPS is not acceptable for an FPS game.

I play at 1920x1200 w/ Medium to keep the FPS up. Especially in a FPS game, I need the frames to be high rather then the quality of the textures to be high.

so you think i should lower the quality a bit to gain fps? hmm i'll try it, to be honest i was expecting a bit more from the laptop, i was shocked when i saw the fps rate on L4D.

I would keep the resolution, but turn off AA/AS and such.

Personally 40 is a minimum, 60 or more is preferable.

The frame rates are very good for the 9600GT. The 9600GT is a mid-range card with mid-range specs... if it was a 9800... well, thats a whole different story.

Well im afraid your going to have to start believing it, I just installed Left 4 Dead a few days ago through steam, and i can play it in maxed out, i mean MAXED out graphics settings, and it runs perfectly, smoothly, not even juddering, its absolutely amazing. (Thats on 1920 x 1200, with the 9600M Card). How can i take screenshots on Windows using my Macbook Pro keyboard while playing and i'll show you?
Haha, thankyou ;)

To see FPS in L4D, TF2, CSS, etc.

In console type just one of these options (they all do the same thing but have different visualizations) and then hit enter.

net_graph 1
net_graph 2
net_graph 3

On the bottom right hand corner you will see your FPS along with some connection settings.

I have vista 64bit installed via bootcamp and I can tell you no one is running L4D or TF2 with max settings and getting "perfect" and or "no jutter" from their mbp.

In L4D with everything turned down to low, 1440x900, I get about 65-80 fps depending on what's going on. If I max everything out I get about 20 fps just standing there and about 10 with zombies. Same goes for TF2.

And before some fool tells me my machine must be broken, it's not.

I have a unibody mbp 2.4, 4gb ram.
Hmmm.. vista eating resources :)
ALl you people which arent getting as good a result as i am, do remember im running XP home 32b.
However, it seems this thread has sparked up some discussion!
I was going to go to bed, but i shall now boot into windows and get some fps for l4d.
Ill be back shortly :D

Can the original poster please share the FPS he got with Test Drive Unlimited? I play 1440x900, and I only averaged between 40-50fps which is good, but seems a little low still.

Well, if you're gonna call 20 fps smooth, then yea, I believe you. Like I said earlier, 'smooth' is a very vague term. :p

You can try 2 things to get an FPS boost. Try turning down shaders to Medium, or try lowering your AA, or both. At 1920x1200, AA isn't really necessary. What is the level of AA in this screenshot anyway?

Haha, thankyou ;)
