click click click

I just adjusted mine and its much quieter! I really got tired of the loud click every time. This is the way it should have been from the beginning!

I always called the little red things nipples.

Lol, I actually like those things, they're pretty easy to use. As far as clicking the trackpad, I have to agree with the other "tapping" supporters here. I just don't enjoy clicking at all. It's nice that it's adjustable though. Clickers can make it more quiet, and tappers can make it stronger for better tapping.

Just to make sure, what size flat head did people use? I just tried vairous kinds and I couldn't screw it easily. The last thing I want to accidentally strip the screw also

Yeah, it's hard not to strip the screw.. try using a cloth inside the triangle screw.

i have same problem, this really difficult to click it now, and sound if i click it just too loud :(. let me try . .

I don't know if I want my trackpad button looser or tighter. If you make it less loud do you have to push down less?

This solution improves things DRAMATICALLY, but it's still not as quiet as the previous models with a button.

I've heard rumors the new model (released at WWDC 2009) has an improved trackpad that is quieter. Can anyone attest to this?

mine definitely seems quieter and easier to click than the several previous generation MBs I tested out at stores. it still a little loud and I'd rather not have to push quite so hard but I'm not popping out the battery and risking a warranty issue to fix it. I'd guess that it will loosen up a bit over time

all these posts that say "tapping is better..." or "just use a mouse..." are really missing the point here!

apple has included a clicking feature because they intend for it to be used. i own both an early 2008 15" MBP and a late 2009 13" MBP, and the trackpad clicking feature on the new MBP [at least in its out-of-the-box state] is quite cumbersome to use. i am an architect, and i do 2D and 3D design work using my older MBP; being able to click efficiently is imperative for working efficiently. tapping just doesn't cut it for how i work - i find it much slower and less responsive than clicking. for me, doing all my mouse work with tapping instead of clicking would be like having a keyboard whose keys did not depress down, and only responded to light "taps" of the finger - no feedback at all for the fingers.... how annoying would that be?

also, as far as implementing the fix described above, the battery pack on the 13" MBP can only be removed by an apple technician - so i guess i'll take the computer in and have them try to adjust it - hopefully at no charge.

anyways.... i guess its too much to ask apple that one of the very basic functions of the computer should work at least as well as in the previous model.

I agree with you: there are situations where a real and quiet button is needed. For example, now in conference rooms you can say without any doubt whether or not there are unibody owners "clOcking".

But I am sure that someone will reply to you that you are using the notebook in a wrong way: you should use a mouse :)

Who cares how old this thread is? It helped cure the problem on my late 2008 unibody. The loud and stiff clicking was driving me crazy and making me stay on my old classic 17" MBP as my primary laptop. I even asked about this in the Apple Store and they didn't have an answer. Glad the OP took the time to post this thread back in early '09. It is still useful info for anyone with these MBPs.

:)

For those curious I actually wrote a review on all three of the MBP models; the 13", the 15" and the 17, which I currently own. The 13" is whisper quiet and clicks the way I think it should. The 15" is louder and the 17" is abnormally loud. Given the above I'll have to take it into a store and have them adjust it I guess. What a pain. They need to get rid of that void-warranty crap.

For those saying "just tap!!!" Tap is annoying. It's not responsive enough when I want it to trigger and it's oversensitive when I don't want it to trigger. I'm used to left click/right click and that's how I want the trackpad to work. I like confirmation of actions. Click always for me.
