I can't help but think that this is some kind of thing that Apple is doing for the DOJ so the DOJ stays off of Apple's back.

Why else would they implement something so ridiculously bad?

What a disastrous change since Apple 's iconic Super Bowl ad ..

According to their stated policies, Apple can not break the iCloud encryption

"No one else, not even Apple, can access end-to-end encrypted information"

So if they can review the pictures, it has to be an as-yet undisclosed capability to pull the photo from your phone before it is stored in iCloud or Apple's posted statement is a lie. Neither option is palatable. Apple plays word games but they tell the truth when they are cornered.
In the iCloud Apple owned the keys. On your device you do.
We keep wishing that Apple inside E2EE in the cloud but at three request off the US has not.
Might want too fact check your statement.

That’s not how this works. And again, if they mandated 10 years ago to monitor all activity on hour phone and they said yes, you’re already in the system.

It amazes me how folks can get it so wrong. Try looking back at the San Bernadio incident and see why Apple was successful at holding off the FBI in court. A Company cannot be compelled to create a back door. This, as designed according to Apple, can be leveraged as a back door. Apple lost that “argument” if they go live with this.

The problem is that there is no such thing as a system that can't be hacked, exploited or has a non-zero chance of a false positive. If a bad actor could find out how to ensure a false positive and upload enough false positive content to an innocent person's iPhone/iCloud to trigger the threshold, get that person reported to the authorities and effectively ruin their life because of the way law enforcement and our society responds to even the slightest accusation in this area.

I've seen this happen. While this has nothing to do with Apple's tech directly, but it is a pretty clear example of the damage a wrongful accusation can bring: While I was in college, I worked for the local government access TV station in my city. Guy that worked for the water department used to come in and use one of the Macs for editing. One of his co-workers at the WD thought it would be funny to add a bunch of porn to the flash drive of photos he was using for one of his video projects. One day he had someone from the mayor's office in the edit bay with him and they started clicking going through the folder of photos. Apparently, many of the images were very age play-oriented and the age of some of the performers was not immediately apparent. The lady from the mayor's office freaked the f out, made a scene, took the flash drive right to a friend at the PD and within 12 hours all hell had descended on this poor guy, 32, with an 18mo kid at home. The co-workers admitted the "prank" a few days later and the suspected photos turned out to be fine, but they still took 3 weeks to search every piece of electronic media he owned. By that time he had quit out of embarrassment and was having to move his fiance and daughter back in from his in-laws' house.

Such a shame.
But then google scan our emails, facebook scan everything and block posts that doesn't fit with their views, youtube block media outlets that dont publish articles they like, NSA scan and record everything, Government's the world over monitor and record the citizens internet browsing habits.
So now Apple decide to start scanning our photos. Next will be our emails, our messages, our data and our telephone calls.
I guess I shouldn't be surprised.

Apple is already scanning emails

And not just for images.

So if Apple is already scanning PDF attachments for words that may indicate you’re talking about illegal pornography, why should I believe they won’t extend their spyware scheme beyond images?

I almost wish I could do that. Hello Mobile in the US has a plan with unlimited talk and text plus 500 MB of data for only $5/month. It would be a simple life. Lol
After iPhone 3G, I went a decade on iPad (& then mini) with a cellular plan and Skype number. I've saved enough thousands to pay for a car. And, I get no spam calls, and people don't bother me with texts bc I tell everybody skype doesn't text worth $&!#, because it doesn't. It's great. This summer some busybody in my life convinced me to put service back on an iPhone 6 I inherited, and while I appreciate that it's safe from iOS15 Spyware, I can't understand why anyone likes phones. The screens are too small and the service sucks and is needlessly expensive. For the birds, this entire endeavor.

Okay, I admit I remain highly sceptical about the furor over this issue and think concerns are overblown. But there is no “win” in this for Apple at this point.

Before everyone celebrates this probable Pyrrhic victory keep in mind this technology is used online by almost every other service provider. If the threat is real it is still present even if Apple does back down.

If you feel Apple was wrong from the start then you better disable facial recognition, time-and-date stamps, even Lidar, on all of your Apple devices because if you believe Apple could be coerced into exploiting this new technology then why would they not give up all of the rest? And then where is safe?

So with this we will all be potentially safer. Well, except people who share child pornography, they will definitely be safer. Hmmm…

🙄
This argument you are using had been beat to death. Oranges and Avocados.
Other services do it cloud side while Apple wants to do it client side.
Kindly show me any of these that are used to report you to the authorities.

Why am I even surprised. Tim, *never* say privacy again. Tell everyone what you do and why, and base your business on that.

The more I dug into this to understand Apple‘s position, the worse it got.

I started off with, “Okay, they must be doing the right thing; they’ve just explained it badly.“

Where am I now? Dumping iCloud and cancelling future underHisEyePhone purchase.

Tim, *never* say privacy again. Tell everyone what you do and why, and base your business on that.

Well, that’s just it, isn’t it? Google is a privacy dumpster fire … but they don’t lie about it.

No need to suck so hard on those sour grapes; Apple isn’t going to change their position. They’ve already burned their privacy reputation to the ground, so they either double down, or die on the hill.

Apple, just cancel this on device surveillance software
Not ideal.

I get the worry and “potential future implementation of expanded use fears“ which are valid.

honestly reports like this, from respected ppl in their fields, I’d granted FAR too much worth without reading carefully the words being used and their meaning.

A foreign government could, for example, compel a service to out people sharing disfavored political speech. That's no hypothetical: WeChat, the popular Chinese messaging app, already uses content matching to identify dissident material. India enacted rules this year that could require pre-screening content critical of government policy. Russia recently fined Google, Facebook and Twitter for not removing pro-democracy protest materials.

COULD /= WILL or SHOULD. There words have different meanings for a real good reason, yet so many are jumping on this bandwagon and inferring like it’s gospel or like a conspiracy theory (a conundrum of words and meanings to begin with).

WeChat headquarters is IN China and operates under Chinese laws according. Should their eXecutives not want to follow would face fines and charges etc if denying China‘s ruling body/regimes weighted hand. USA companies are not under such scrutiny. They can bow out! Take the fine and choose to ignore doing business therein. If I may another certain company was exiled almost completely globally and it really hurt that company but they’re not like what they used to be I terms of prominence outside of China like they used to be. Collectively all outsized companies could collaborate to exit for change and cause an implosion of technology policies which can only grow so far where changes in policy to work in a global commerce will and must change. Only coordinated will this work regardless of money power incentivizing confusing deals/business.

PS: IM Im referencing China due to the example of WeChat social media/etc app used here in direct context, this is NO WAY is a view into lie/dislike in a personal level, I’m neutral here and in my personal view of this nation.

just because Google, Facebook and Twitter were FINED doesn’t mean they were forced to comply or did. Notice no specific mention of compliance with those companies was stated?! Specific words and their meanings ppl.

it’s actions NOT taking that would be taken to heart here !
Google, Facebook and Twitter in this report did NOT comply. They were fined according within.. that’s it so if THEY didn’t do it why is this increasing fear towards if Apple will!?.?! Where is the source of this?!
whom is to gain buy pointing to Apple could or would comply, based on just being fined for the co petting companies!?!

NEEDS to paid attention to here.

is a change in how implemented by Apple yes. Should Apple dismantle this or abandoned is up for debate.

however JUST cause researches test solution had zthem worried doesn’t mean Apples IMO,emendation is the EXACT same to be implemented.

lamens terms. Your life long spouse has a huge crush on Jason Momoa or one of the Kardashian girls. They’d love to meet them. Said theyre incredibly attractive. Does it followed theyd cheat on you if giving the chance?! Not likely as attraction is skin deep only. They STILL have a choice to act or not! Regardless of how much they fantasized about the idea which comes to shove that is the key.

Ultimately has it been example add this magnitude for Apple can actually complied and bent??
