I currently have a 4S with the 4 gig plan with tethering. If I do this, I understand that the tethering won't be unlimited. But will I lose tethering altogether? Or is the mobile plan somehow unlimited while the tethering remains limited to 4 gig?

I didnt get the pm bruinsrme, & lol ok sounds good micawoli, & Kenkamm, that is a good question. & i had a person ask me that eariler as well. I think that you would lose the tethering option, if you went to unlimited.

You will lose the tethering function. You can't have unlimited and official tethering.
You will have to stick to the 4GB plan or jb and tether unofficially but if AT&T notices you're tethering they will switch your plan to the 4GB with tethering.

new sim required?

I noticed it seems a new sim is required for this. Ideally I'd go to the AT&T store to get this however what do you tell them to get a new SIM? Will they actually believe my SIM is just broken even though I purchased a 4S just a few weeks ago as a new customer?

I did that twice today.
Offcourse I went to 2 different AT&T stores
Hey I got a used iPhone 4 I'd like to upgrade to. Can you activate it on my line? I'm using an iPhone 2G right now so please make sure I don't lose my unlimited data please. I tried cutting my sim from the original iphone to fit in the iphone 4/4S but I ended up ruining it and threw it away.
Sure not a problem, a few minutes later I was out with a new active Microsim and unlimited 3G data on my iphone
