We dropped my wife down to a tiered plan because she wasn't using enough data to make it worth our while for us to keep her on unlimited. I wish we had it now because I'd sell that bad boy lol.

I would say vote with your wallet but what's the alternative? Super slow LTE with sprint? Now that doesn't sound like an alternative to me. I believe what another said is correct though, soon enough (5-10years?) they will revert back to unlimited plans as the infrastructure improves and the consumer demands it. Right now it's not worth their while (att) to offer them because as I said, the alternatives aren't a viable options IMHO so they know the consumer won't be going anywhere.

That rep was wrong.
The original iPhones activation has been changed years ago.
It won't take you to that screen that added an unlimited data plan.
It will just activate without making any changes to your account.
We have been through many threads with details about this over the years here.
But if you don't believe just try it and see how far you get.

Nah. I don't doubt you. I thought it was odd, him saying that. All but one of our phones here is already unlimited and I don't want unlimited on my 12yo's phone.

I had thought that loophole was closed. At least since 2010 when I used it to get unlimited for my middle kid. :)

I hear you.
I'd actually want unlimited on a teenagers phone cause you know they will use tons of data and when they go over they will just ignore the texts from AT&T and keep using data without saying anything.
Happened to a friend of mine and her son racked up an additional $80 in data overages once he went over his 2GB of data:D
She was heated.

I'll gladly pay, for unlimited data.

Ok. It's $30 for the first 3GB, then $10 for every 1GB after that.

AS MUCH AS YOU WANT! ALL YOU CAN EAT!

Hooray?

You don't wan't to pay for it. You want to be in a program that hasn't been offered for years, at the same price. Or a loophole if you can't. Big difference.

Buy an unlimited account through Verizon. Problem solved.

If not, save $$$ until you can or get over it

that's why you go to t-mobile if you have teenagers. i think AT&T and verizon have kid controls, but they charge for them.

----------

cellular data will never be as cheap as home internet because the cost structure is a lot higher

It's only a matter of time before data becomes unlimited again. With T-Mo and Sprint offering it, AT&T and Verizon can dismiss them right now because "unlimited" is on a sub-par network. TMO and Sprint aren't sitting around, they're aggressively improving their network.

Just like VZW was the dominant force in 2002 and ATT had to be cheaper to compete, the tables will turn and TMO and Sprint will start chipping away at the big guys' customers and they'll have to react.

If you think 2.5gb is going to cut it in 5 years when wifi and LTE become 1, and a video size of a 4k movie is 500GB for an uncompressed movie, you're kidding yourself.

The carriers are just profiting while they can. It'll become as cheap as home internet in the very near future, where $40 buys an unlimited 25mbps connection.

----------

While I agree with you that there's a bit of entitlement, I also have to disagree with your comment. We're customers, meaning we're the ones supporting ATT, VZW, TMO, etc. We have a certain authority to be able to complain or compliment, because we are the customer, and without us, the carriers wouldn't exist. For some reason, Americans have become soft, and many are content with mediocrity, be it from each other, or from a business we pay to support.

It's not absurd to ask that AT&T keep up with current technology, and it's not absurd to expect that they either price based on the product they deliver or improve the product based on current technology.

Imagine buying a hard drive in 2005, $150 for a 250gb hard drive, then in 2009, WD saying they'll sell you a 250gb drive for $150 or a 500gb for $200, and then in 2012 WD saying they'll sell you a 250gb drive for $150, a 500gb for $200, or a 1TB for $150. That's not the way technology evolution goes, and it's not the way I expect to buy bandwidth.

I have paid Comcast about $40 a month for internet now for 5 years. I went from having a 50GB cap to a 200GB cap, to no cap, and from 10mbps to 25mbps and to 50mbps. They did well and increased speed and cap\limits while charging the same. AT&T is not following suit. They're raising the price\gb while the industry's cost per gb has gone down 90%.

True. We are customers. If you don't like the policy/price/cost/offering: LEAVE.

Vote with your wallet. As long as AT&T CAN get $30 for 3GB I don't blame them one bit. I also don't complain about the ridiculous costs, because I have the ability to go elsewhere for a better deal or *gasp* not have service at all if I was really upset about it...

Stop looking for favors just because you're a customer. The customer is NOT always right, and just because you pay for a service by choice it doesn't mean you are owed anything more than what you pay for. If you don't like it, go to a place where you do. It's great having freedom isn't it????

Besides, Obama pays for my phone :p

Well, people are selling unlimited data plans on ebay right now, they're selling for $350-$700 on average.... Pricey but worth it as long as the cellular companies don't do away with the service in a few years.

Exactly. Not even the first gen iPhone has the 2G data unlimited since people where abusing that.

The only way to have unlimited is to already have it or buy the plan from someone.

Enlighten me. How does one do that/how would it work?

Cause I'm sitting here with my grandfathered unlimited AT&T data plan, and I've been thinking about jumping ship to get tethering. I've had it since i bought my iP3g years back. Why just toss it if I can get paid?

people sell it on ebay and then you and the buyer have to go to an AT&T store where you transfer the account responsibility to that person and AT&T checks them out and allows you to do it

Hmm. Thanks. I'll probably just let it slide. I can't be bothered. Lol.

I also have an unlimited att data plan I'm thinking about selling. Pm if interested. Unlimited is definitely nice. You dont have to worry about anything.

You do it all over the phone, actually... They get your phone number, though. AT&T gets much higher price than Verizon so you should sell it and make some easy cash!

yeah... we thought about going ahead and giving it to my daughter when she was 10 and got her first handed down iPhone... I kinda wish I had sometimes.. she's gone over about 4 or 5 times... But... she's learning. No overages this year.

I'll gladly pay, for unlimited data.

Then it's time to switch to another carrier. Or find out how much data you actually use, and just get the plan that covers that.

I used to be a "They can have my unlimited data when they pry it from my cold dead hands" user. Then I looked at three years worth of data usage, and I only exceeded 2 GB three months. Two were just barely over 2 GB, one was way over - but I was doing illicit tethering then on a nearly month-long road trip. (Before there was an option for legitimate tethering on the iPhone.) Even with legitimate tethering, I haven't used more than 2 GB.

That said, my AT&T contract just expired, so I moved to T-Mobile, to make sure I don't go over and have an unexpected bill.

If you can't switch to Tmobile then it sucks but you will just have to deal with it then. I personally am enjoying my unlimited data with TMO (sitting at around 6GB used so far this cycle). Couldn't imagine trying to use iTunes Match on the limited data plans of AT&T or Verizon since it uses quite of bit of data.

This makes me so glad I'm in the UK.

I pay £41/month (roughly $65)

For that I get

All you can eat data (up to 1TB)
2000 minutes between any network (fixed or mobile)
5000 minutes on the same network
5000 texts

And an average 3G speed of 10Mb/second

Oh yes and when they launch 4G, (next month) I'll automatically get it added to my account for free.

Here's a thought: why don't you be a man and have a (smidge) of integrity and pay like the rest of us do, instead of trying to get over on somebody?

Man up.

So if he finds $100 lying on the ground on the street, he shouldnt pick it up because all the other 'men' on the street arent picking it up either?

grow up

I got tired of the constantly trying to figure out the better deal and worrying about unlimited data and everything else. I actually used my upgrade on Verizon this weekend and changed to the share everything. I chose a data plan that's fine. My phone has been broken for months and everything was downloaded over cellular and I still barely reached the data max we have on the new plan. I just don't care anymore.

If you had used bestbuy mobile you could have kept unlimited data

Unlimited texts

And an average 4G speed of 20Mb+/second (over 30mbps at my condo).

Oh yes, I already have 4G LTE, it's 2013.
