Oh, I see. What you propose appears consistent with what works with the grandfathered plan.

I'm have that discount also.

I am a bit nervous about my $20 not coming off the 2gb plan i just switch one line to. However I did ask for a supervisor when the first rep had no clue. She stated she checked after the change to 2GB and said she did in fact see it under my promotions section still. I got her ID and name etc, she said she noted my account and if for some reason it falls of she would setup a reoccurring credit. So we shall see. The spare line was just that a spare unlimited data line because it was so cheap but I don't really use it in anything so I figured being able to cycle three upgrades (worth $450 a piece in subsidy on iphones) was worth having a 2gb plan instead of unlimited on that line, so long as my bill doesnt go (if I lost the $20 off)

If you have unlimited, you can get the 6gb plan and then you can upgrade that line without changing to the mobile share plan.

Would I then be paying for a 6GB line? If so, I'm better off moving to family and paying for a larger data pool than 6GB for one line.

I tried to get the 6gb plan they didn't see it anymore in the system when i switched from UDP. Then she said it may be a special something I said ya know what, forget it just give me the 2gb (for my purposes) it was best not to mess with anything that could interrupt my $20 off data line promo. Also the first rep said they would do that 6gb if it went to edge , which would defeat my reason for giving up UDP (subsidized phones)

We have two lines. I have UDP and my wife has a 2bg data plan. My line is eligible for an upgrade now, and my wife's line is eligible for an upgrade in February. Presumably I can switch my upgrade with hers and buy the 6 on her line, activate it and then swap phones. After which her line will be eligible for an upgrade in February, and I still have UDP. I plan to use her iphone 4 for the $200 credit and give her my iphone 5 to use until February (she doesn't care what phone she has, just that the 4 is getting really old and slow). I assume all of this should work based on what I read and she will still be able to use an upgrade in February and use my 5 until then.

Eh I wouldn't be so confident. This is how I've always done it but it seems they've adamantly changed this. How are you going to order the phone with the alternate upgrade? Through Verizon's website?

I apologize in advance if this is a stupid question or has been answered. How can I keep my plan intact with at least 1 unlimited data line based on the family plan below?

2x Smartphones with unlimited data
2x Basic phones with no data

All 4 lines are now eligible for upgrades

You would need to upgrade one of the basic phones AND add AND KEEP data on that line. This is the loophole that has been closed. You can keep UDP on the first two however you will need to add data onto the basic phone line and keep it there.

Might just play it out and wait with my 5S. We'll see at the end of Oct when I'm trotted if its worth keeping ULD.

Thanks for the clarification. So I would upgrade a basic phone to a 2GB plan and buy the iPhone 6 with that plan and then move the device to an unlimited line?

Yes, through the website. This is essentially what I did for the 5 and had no issues. Trying to chat with a rep online but all have been busy all day.

I have done much research , but alas until I try it myself which I will be doing for this pre-order. It appears the loophole closed was the loophole of upgrading a dumb phone then swaping to another line and NOT retaining data on the dumbphone. You can still XFER an upgrade to your 2GB data line and upgrade then do what you please with the phone SINCE that said line STILL has a data plan of $30 or more. Basically they are preventing you form transferring your upgrade to a $9.99 a month line and getting subsidies like many (including myself) were doing. They want the monthly revenue to be maintained, and that same $30 data is being retained plus the $9.99 add a line portion. I get $20 off every data line and supervisor confirmed switching on of my unlimited data plans to a 2gb would still get the discount, hence I did it to be able to keep swapping upgrades. I retained 2 of my lines on unlimited

Can you cycle 3 upgrades to the online that is on the TDP at one time? We have 3 phones that are eligible for upgrades with UDP that we do not want to lose.

Continuing the upgrade transfer talk to keep unlimited data...

Would you even need to "activate" the iPhone 6 on the line that the upgrade was used on or could you just immediately drop in the sim from the line you're actually interested in having the iphone 6 on?

I have 5 iPhones - all unlimited and 5 dumb phones on my account. Upgrades are everywhere...

I want to get one iPhone 6 for my iPhone 5 line and keep my ULD.

Here is what I think will work.
1. Buy the iPhone 6 on an existing iPhone unlimited line - yes, i'll loose ULD, but i will choose a low data consumption iPhone.
2. Once it arrives, I remove the sim, then put in the sim from my current ULD iPhone 5 into the new iPhone 6.
3. Turn on the iPhone 6 and i should be all set with my ULD intact.
4. Then the other iPhone which was used for the upgrade looses their ULD - but should not matter as they are low data consumers.

In this scenario, I don't have to worry about the data charges being applied to a dumb phone line due to the new rules/loophole closure

Any thoughts???

So I wanted to talk to a representative to make sure everything was good to go and this happened:

Please hold for a Support Representative to assist you.
Thank you for contacting Verizon Wireless.

Your Chat Session ID is RT6591XXXXXX.

My name is Loren, how may I assist you?
Loren: Hi there and happy Thursday to you!
Snake201: Hi, I would like to upgrade to the new iPhone 6 and not lose my unlimited plan
Snake201: I will be due for an upgrade soon
Snake201: can I transfer my upgrade to another line in my plan?
Snake201: and have them take the upgrade?
Loren: I totally understand how important that unlimited data can be. I fear that if you do use the upgrade on the line that has the unlimited data plan however, you would indeed lose that unlimited data plan option as it is no longer available. You would then select a plan that is currently offered.
Loren: You can transfer an upgrade from a different phone number to yours and keep that plan but if you use the upgrade from the line that has that unlimited data plan that unlimited data plan will go away.
Loren: Another thought would be purchasing a phone using the Edge agreement. You do make monthly installment payments of about $35.00 a month for the phone but that allows you to keep that data plan as you did not use your upgrade.
Snake201: So if Phone 1 has the unlimited data plan and an upgrade. and Phone 2 has a tiered data plan and no upgrade. And Phone one transfer their update to Phone 2 and Phone 2 then upgrades the phone. Then gives the phone back to phone 1 phone loses the unlimited data?
Loren: Correct, as the contract for phone 1 has been renewed by using that upgrade.
Snake201: Even though Phone 1 never updated their phone? They just swapped sim cards?
Loren: That is correct because Phone 1 actually used the contract that they had available to get that discount to get a new phone for phone 2.
Snake201: So pretty much unless you buy the phone full price you can't keep unlimited?
Loren: Unfortunately that is correct unless again, the other line is the one with the upgrade or, you have some other manner to get the phone whether it is on EBay, or elsewhere that does not require that two year contract.
Snake201: Why is verizon forcing people out of unlimited
Loren: While I would never say that I agree with it as I know that I loved my unlimited data when I had it, basically, it comes down to the fact that more and more people are using data these days. With that being the case, the only way to ensure that customers can get the connection they need when they need it is by trying to streamline this back a bit. That is where the removal of that unlimited data came in.
Snake201: Okay thank you.
Snake201: Have a great night
Loren: You are so very welcome! I know it was not what you were hoping to hear but I certainly will not mislead you and cause you some heartache.

So is she wrong about the upgrading or am I going to have to buy the phones with no contract?

If this has been asked recently please point me to the right place. I tried searching and couldn't find what I was looking for.

My family has 5 iPhones with verizon, four with unlimited Data and one with 2GB cap. In years past, when the unlimited data phones would have an upgrade we would pass said upgrade to the phone with out the unlimited data, sign a new contract for 2 years and get the phone subsidized. Then after receiving the phone and activating it we would swap it back and the unlimited data phones would have the new phone and still keep the plan the same.

Does this still work? I thought I read that they some how closed this loophole? We have a couple of phones due for an upgrade and we do not want to lose unlimited data. What can we do?

Thank you ,

Snake201
Out of curiosity, when you do the upgrade transfer, which line ends up with the new 2-year contract--is it the unlimited line that originally had the upgrade, or is it the non-unlimited line that got the upgrade?

The line that gave the transfer away got the 2 year contract.

hi everyone

would anyone know if this plan works

i have 3 iphones with ULD all 3 are eligible.

my wife doesnt use that much data maybe 1gb i use about 9gb i was planning on upgrading her number to the iphone 6 and then taking it for myself and giving her my 5s.

which is a better option

wait inline at a apple store friday get the phone take the sim card out and replace it with mine and have them give me a new sim card for my 5s. or order the phone online and bring it to verizon ?

I tried upgrading one of my unlimited lines and it doesn't show the 6gb, only the 2gb, etc plans. Any help?

Were you able to figure it out?

We ended up not going through with the upgrade this morning waiting for people to chime in how they kept their unlimited plans

I have an UDP line and a dumb line eligible for upgrade. I upgraded the dumb line to the iPhone last night and added the 2GB data. When the new iPhone arrives I'm going to not activate it on the new 2GB data line. I will take the sim from my UDP line and use on the new phone. I like to see what happens when I don't activate the new 'dumb to smart' line.

I'm assuming they will charge me the full price on the dumb line by not activating. In that case I guess I'm fine with it hearing how a lot of people are having trouble ordering the new VZ iPhone without contract. Stay tune...

I bought the phone outright - thats how i kept my UD

Between the $200 trade in for an old iPhone 4 i have, and selling my iphone 5 for about $200, it makes it a good deal for me - and the money I save over 2 years ($550) sticking with my current plan
