Problem is AIM messages are charged as text messages on AT&T...
AIM messages sent using an actual AIM messaging app would almost certainly not be charged as SMS's.

I'll agree with you here.
AT&T has no way of tracking whether a third party apps upload/download is for instant messaging. Will they charge you a text message if you upload a picture through Facebook app?
Instant messaging apps will not be charged as texts, even though I know they are on some other phone.
AT&T's Website said:Messaging Unlimited: Now have the freedom of unlimited messaging for one low monthly price. Send and receive unlimited messages - text, picture, video and IM with anyone in the U.S.
what I'm trying to ask is... If I get the 3G iPhone and add the $30 data package, will the unlimited family texting still apply? Any thoughts?
Family messaging counts now... so sure, it should probably count then.
If unlimited texting is still just $20, might as well just pay the extra $5 instead of getting the 1500.
I don't get this.. Where are you guys getting the SMS fees? Everything I'm reading on Ars Technica and Apple Insider says that the plans will be the same, just add $10 for the 3G access. Where do you guys get that there will be no SMS included and that you have to pay $5 a month for 200 messages and $15 for 1500? Please let me know, as I don't see that info anywhere.
Nor do I. Everything I've read says you can expect a $10 bump for 3G access.
And this was posted to Appleinsider
http://www.appleinsider.com/article..._3g_data_plan_at_30_nixes_rev_share_deal.html
and this article/interview which makes it sound like a straight trade from $20 to $30

I got it directly from AT&T rep.. .
Text is no longer included in data plan, it's seperate... the extra 10 gets you 3G access only.. Text is an extra charge starting at $5.00 for 200 texts..
