Unlock for iPhone coming out soon, no need, install anyway?

Just following up... I restored and jailbroke, without unlocking, and the battery life is back to normal.

does simply removing the ultrasnow package help put it back to "normal?" or would I have to restore and re-jailbrake?

I think this is all that you would need to do as the ultrasn0w unlock does not permanently change any system files. Just uninstall it from Cydia, no need for a full restore.

i think it makes no sense to unlock if one doesn't need it in any way
