Strange situation - definitely not related to any Firmware or anything - thats complete BS what you experienced is/can be due to a glitch in the system. [I would accept firmware related things if it was a Android phone so many things are changed during a flash/update/restore but with Apple its only going up and no going down for the past almost 2 years]

I remember not too long ago Apple Servers were down - its possible when Apple restores the servers from a previous backup that the IMEI's get reversed.

Remember iPhones are tied 100% to Apple's ecosystem along with their IMEI etc, the only control carrier has is the "yes" and "no" when it comes to unlocking that they can tell apple. At the end of the day the IMEI's are tagged on Apple's servers and if those IMEI's were on a server that crashed but perhaps the backup used to restore did not have the IMEI tagged as "unlockable" then its possible one can experienced a re-locked phone.....makes sense? -- Sorry I'm trying to put it into simple words of what really is the only thing that makes sense.

Very well put.
Out of millions unlocked iphones without any issues that would be the only logical thing that would explain how a few incidents of iphones get relocked again.

explanation makes sense....

i just hope the unlock service comes back up soon...

want to unload the 4s and start looking for a 5s :)

The unlocks are stored on apples servers.

When unlocks used to be more expensive, there were a few people who tried to chargeback/scam Chronic's service. I'm pretty sure that Chronic mentioned on his twitter that he relock those scammers.

Also for a company like Apple, I would be surprised if they keep losing data after every crash. It's not just the recently that people have been relocked after using an unlock service; it actually has been happening for a while now. I really doubt Apple is losing that much data for a long period of time. I'm pretty sure if they did, they would have looked into solutions by now.

I wont comment on chronics claim [Not because he's right] - At the end of the day no one is direct - they all claim - ever try putting pressure on the supplier your ordering your unlocks from and have them come back and say "we are working with our supplier or our supplier is down" despite claiming "direct" lol anyway I still think the issue remains with a glitch in the system and I do agree that if apple was loosing data at that high rate we would see more issues but a unlock reversing is a minor issue and its entirely possible that it only occurs due to a glitch in the system every now and then affecting extremely small # of phones [PS Macrumors members do not represent majority]

Technology at the end of the day will have its flaws no matter how much we try to perfect it, so long as its continued to be made by mankind [lol that sounds like something optimus prime would say]

Well add mine to the list of iPhones previously unlocked that have now been re-locked. I'm starting to get the impression this is an issue with more than just a few iPhones.

Swiftunlocks never guaranteed the unlock would be permanent as far as I can remember (and it was cheap), so I'm not really frustrated--but it does illustrate to me that:

1. IMEI unlocks are not necessarily permanent
2. Your iPhone can be re-locked at any time without notice
3. If you want a reliable, unlocked iPhone you'll have to spring for the full price of a true factory unlocked iPhone.

Boooo! It was fun while it lasted.

Was your iPhone ever blacklisted?

I had an iPhone 4 that I paid full price for in canada. I was bought from an apple store and never was locked. It worked fine with my att sim until I did a restore and the phone locked to Rogers. I never used the phone on their network. The apple store couldn't do much to help me even though they saw full priced invoice. Finally had to call apple direct CS and they were able to unlock it.

Phones can relock, even legit unlocked phones.

I'm not sure either but a few glitches with millions of iPhones unlocked and for a $2 price tag.
Still not bad IMO.
It's not just a particular unlockers issue, it could happen with any grey market unlock provider;)

You're absolutely correct. It is probably still worth it if you get unlocked just before a big trip overseas -- since it seems to take quite an effort to reset a lock. $2 sure beats a $2,000 roaming bill.

AT&T Call

After reading through a lot of information about this subject, and one post in particular, I gave AT&T a call - and I'm in New Zealand. I said I had an iPhone 4 that was bought overseas and I need it unlocked. He asked if I ever had an account with them to which I replied "No". He then told me they do not unlock phones from non-customers.
So now I have just paid $50NZD to try http://atfdl.com/ and see if they can do it, I'll post a reply when any progress is made.

question about using unlockfusion.com

I have done 2 AT&T iphone unlocks in 3 weeks for $2 each. I get an email for each one within a few hours saying its unlocked. I don't know why people have issues with them.

I entered Unlockfusion.com and Swiftunlock.com but it says it costs $39.99 to unlock an at&t iphone 5. How does everyone else get it for only $2? Can someone please include the exact link?

That post was months ago. Market prices have gone back up recently.

Him and his brother are both arrogant f * cks. I would know this after supplying unlocks for one of them. They don't want to pay upfront and their orders must be priority.

So much for that.

Hello, I have an iphone 4s from ATT, need to unlock it ASAP. Anyone knows any good servises?

"ATFDL is a huge player not only in the Apple ecosystem, but also the unlock business and if we have to fix the market and destroy other business by charging a cheaper price, then we will. And it will happen soon."

Yawn.

SWIFTUNLOCKS: "You act like one.... Cheap, dumb, ignorant and probably smell like ****. "

ME: "Let's start in this order...
1) Cheap - I told you to refund purely out of principle.
2) Ignorant - If you were American you'd know that you are the idiot: You can't speak English to save your life.
3) Smell like **** - Your accent makes you smell like **** by default."
