Just an Update

Finally got back to the island to I used a sim card cutter, trimmed the regular sim into a micro sim, put the local sim over the gevey tray and put it into my iphone 4S on 5.0.1

It literally took 5 seconds to unlock the phone plug and play

I use iMessage through my email so Ive never actually tried out if the local phone number works on iMessage

ur not having any issue where iMessage continuously tries to activate but can't....I have a Rogers Wireless locked iPhone 4S and when i am using on AT&T it can't activate iMessage since the short code in the carrier.plist is for rogers and I cannot edit it until jailbreak for iOS 5.1 is out......due to that I keep getting a annoying text message saying "please use a standard 10 digit number with a whole bunch of random letters....as you can see I know what the issue is but what my question is are you getting any sort of text message(s) when you have iMessage on? even tho you are using your email address.....if not was your iMessage turned on and caller ID set to the email prior to inserting the DIGICEL SIM? oh and what island you on?

Ok thanks everyone. I will stop my futile attempts :p

This is pretty cheap, can anyone confirm it is legit?

its cheap but I wouldn't trust it....buy it from "Battery-Juice" seller on eBay they selling for $21.xx....they are listed as the official "Distributors" on www.applenberry.com....I called applenberry to confirm it as well and they even provided me with support once I told them I bought it from Battery-Juice after looking at their "Distributors" page on their website....I can confirm that its legit as I have one and its working wonderfully....my first one had a little issue but Battery-Juice immediately sent out a replacement once I shipped the first one without questions.

Indeed, I would like to know if anyone has tried this

Not getting any error messages. Only problem is I am having to use my email address for iMessage. Its not a big deal because my phone is fully functional because of gevey 4s. Its just irritating that I cannot use my digicel number for iMessage. Im on Saint Kitts. I also got their prepaid data plan for $15 a month. I had to jail break my iphone...download tetherme....then set the APN to this islands APN. After Ios5 apple got smart and deleted the change APN option so you MUST jailbreak it and dload tetherme.

anyone that isn't jailbroken can always use http://www.unlockit.co.nz to set/enter APN settings......thats great tho that u aren't getting a error msg....I was with my first chip but now with second I'm not....in order to use your phone number since u are jailbroken you can go into the carrier.plist and change the number iMessage/Facetime uses to active to the +01144xxxxxxxx(i don't know it exactly but u can google it) also I was on St.Kitts & Nevis for school lol...2 years ago n they didn't have iPhone data plans back then only for blackberries.

Hmm.. Well I'll keep trying I guess

Good luck, I was trying the exact same thing for the same reason travel. I have no intentions of leaving AT&T but I travel to Japan often. I have been with AT&T for my personal phone since 1999 and only left for the 2 times I was deployed overseas with the military. I tried about 10 times with customer service and then went back and forth with a board chairman after I emailed the CEO of AT&T.

What I found funny is if I pay the ETF they will then unlock my phone and lose me as a customer....or I can stay on as a customer and they just get an extra $275 from me. Even offered to pay the ETF as a deposit, and when I finish my contract I'd like it back. Sort of a "good faith" unlock especially for a long time customer. They said if they unlocked my phone I would probably then no fulfill my contract (which I stated, then you'd charge me an ETF thus fulfilling the requirement to unlock).

I also asked for a temporary unlock, I don't see why they can't "re-lock" the phone after 30 days or whatever time I give them. Usually it's 2 to 4 weeks I am overseas.

They refused, and it's upsetting that I have to use the grey market (grevey or icanlock.com or hope for another cydia ultrasn0w unlock).

This is was the last email I got from Thomas Gray (board chairman?).
ATT is trying to work towards a solution that benefits everyone, a win, win. Hopefully the issue of unlocking for phones for international travel will be addressed in the coming months. In fact your case has been used as support for unlocking the iPhone for international travel. Although you didn’t benefit personally from the complaint, you suggestion has not fallen on deaf ears and is the basis of a very good solution for the future.

Haha what school did you go to?
Also how do I change the carrier.plist?

the medical school on St.Kitts...*not Ross or UMHS* which one u at?

Also as far as my understanding goes you can possibly copy the settings located in Carrer.plist located within the "Carrierlab.bundle" folder using iFile into your carriers Carrier.plist....or you can go into your original carrier's carrier.plist and change the iMessage/Facetime Activation # to the +011447786205094....that can/could also work

My iPhone 4S thats with Rogers isn't jailbroken yet but as soon as it comes out ill test one of my above mentioned methods...if you happen to solve it do let me know.

here's are a few articles/threads on other forums that talk about the process:

Yeah, I agree it's pretty stupid. Their logic is severely flawed.

IF I was to get AT&T to unlock it and then go to say, TMobile, I would still be bound to my AT&T contract and would probably have to pay the ETF.

Alternately, I could pay the ETF, get it unlocked, go on TMobile - exactly the same amount of money goes to AT&T.

Or AT&T could just unlock it for me and I stay on their service, and guess what - they get exactly the same amount of money from me in the end...

Simplest thing for them to do is maximize customer satisfaction - go with the first option. Seriously, how stupid can they be.

Yes , and most are deployed military . The others just got lucky due to the confusion when they first changed their policy .

So you are encouraging him to harass them until he gets his way ?

Nice .

Its real simple if your phone is no longer under contract , bought at full price or in the military deployed overseas & are a current or former customer your eligible .

The more people attempting to abuse this policy the more they will strictly enforce it .

Some who have posted are even doing it for profit which not only delays legit requests but jeopardizes the policy even being continued .

I'm not sure that AT&T has a choice about phones out of contract, but I'm not sure. I thought there was some legal standing on this point.

In any case, if nobody is going to ask, does it really matter how strictly they enforce the policy? And is it really abusing the policy to ask? Finally, as a paying customer they work for me - and if want to call everyday, that is my business. As long as I am polite and don't abuse the rep I doubt it will make much difference to AT&T.

But then again, what do I know? I'm angry with AT&T right now anyway.
