I always just tell them "to use on a different carrier." I don't think they care, they probably just have a field to fill out in their system. if you ask them to do the unlock request for you I'm pretty sure they just fill out the online form.

Thinking about it some more, if you lie about it and say something like "to use overseas" when you actually just want to use it on tmobile, that probably hurts us more than anything. If they're collecting the data and they see "Oh, a lot of people want to take their phones to a different carrier" it would probably help in getting better pricing and options. As opposed to "because I want to" which they can't really respond to.

The solution is very simple, by law no locked phone. like some countries do.
you want to move to a deferent company? good pay of your phone or the new company will have to take over the charge of the phone, and it easy to force,
by the IMEI #.

Eh, I hate giving AT&T any info. They've left a sour taste in my mouth. Knowing my luck, one deranged rep would make sure my unlock is denied or delayed if they knew I was unlocking with plans to leave.

It's been more than 2 days and no response to my unlock request through AT&T online.

For those folks who've unlocked online, how long did it take you to receive a reply?

Busy because of the extra requests from this thread maybe haha

Just kidding, maybe the trained monkey that pushes the yes/no button fell asleep?

My unlock request was approved within five minutes of submittal. Maybe they're just busy?

My request was approved in under a minute this morning. Submitted from the portal, clicked the confirm link in the immediately-sent email and then received the "Congratulations! Here are your unlock instructions" email a few seconds later.

Did you make sure to click on the link they sent you in the email when you requested the unlock?

I did click the link and received the confirmation it was now in process. Still nothing. Weird, since a couple of folks in this thread have received a reply in just minutes. Oh well, I'll just wait and hope they get to it. I guess it's kind of frustrating.

Yeah once I requested mine yesterday it was approved almost instantly.

Is your phone still under contract with NEXT? When did you get the phone?

Start over.

Worked for me.

Had one from yesterday in limbo.
Started over this morning, within five minutes I had an approval email

I've never had an unlock request that met the criteria to be unlocked denied.

I thought i had once. But they pointed me to the section of the eligibility requirements that say "If you performed an early upgrade, you must wait the 14-day buyer’s remorse period before you can request to unlock your previous device." I hadn't really paid attention to that rule. Two weeks later I resubmitted and it went through perfectly.

The rules are clearly spelled out. I understand that sometimes you might run in to a clueless rep and that's unfortunate. But it's never prevented me from getting an unlock, provided the eligibility requirements are met.

I, honestly, at this point have no issues with AT&T's locking of devices and the requirements to unlock them. If you sign a two-year contract, fulfill it or pay the ETF to get your phone unlocked. If you're on a EIP plan, pay it off. Those aren't very hard requirements to fulfill.

Success! I just restored in iTunes and received the congratulations your unlocked message! :)

Thank you for contacting AT&T about unlocking your mobile device.

Congratulations! Here are your unlock instructions:

First one came back as denied. Reason: "Your device is currently active on another AT&T customer’s account."

I purchased this phone from someone who paid for it in full. They just had to call AT&T and have the device removed from their account. Re-requested the unlock and it came back approved.

I submitted one request on Wednesday after and still say "in progress" today. I did submit another one yesterday morning and that one also said "in progress". Should I submit another one today?

How does one find out of their phone is locked or not. Where in setting is this found?

Thanks:apple:

It's not in the settings. If it was purchased at full price it is most likely unlocked, depending on where you purchased it from. Also, if you have another carrier's SIM card you could check it that way. My phone was locked because I bought it from AT&T under NEXT. Two days ago, AT&T approved my unlock request despite the fact that the phone is not paid off.

I submitted mine on Monday afternoon and it came back at 7:30 pm last night. I was impatient as well and submitted 2 additional requests. I was thinking there might be something up with the website, since some folks in this thread received their replies in minutes.

Going by my experience, I would suggest you wait.
