Even if the vast majority have never been re-locked? While I understand your concern to a degree, I do not understand your aversion to even trying. The chances of getting locked in the middle of a trip are few and you can always pull out your existing standby or rent a phone.

Exactly.

I don't think there is any evidence that the 'vast majority' have never been relocked. People are talking hypotheticals here. I found plenty of proof online that these unlocks do get relocked at times. There really is no data as to how often. I just know for a fact that it does happen.

I simply don't trust that unlock_fusion or any other cheap unlock program will work in the long term. I simply want to unlock my iPhone 5 and never have to worry about it getting locked in the future. Even going forward with an Ebay service really does not provide me with what I truly want.

I'm going to call AT&T tomorrow. If they unlock my iPhone, awesome. Otherwise I'll purchase something unlocked before my trip. Pretty simple.

In this case the lack of complaints is the evidence. Even you said "at times". The evidence for re-locks is extremely minimal. Although neither is quantifiable, it doesn't take a genius to realize there's a good chance of getting unlocked and staying unlocked. I think the longer you wait, the higher the risk of loosing the opportunity or getting caught in an audit and re-locked.

I guess you must be too poor to risk $8? Only real explanation I can think of. It's not hard to see that the potential benefits far outweigh the risks.

Edit: I do hope you get your AT&T sanctioned unlock though. I just don't understand your unwillingness to consider other options.

You seem to not want to understand that my objection to using eBay is that I don't feel it's a proper solution. Sure it's a nothing to lose situation. That isn't my point. I want a proper solution and I personally don't find the eBay route to be that. Nothing more to it.

I'm really tired of defending my desire to not use eBay. I won't be responding to others who keep bringing it up. If you want to talk iPhone 5 AT&T unlocks, I'm all ears.

yeah and even if it were to hypothetically re-lock, wouldn't you have to do a restore for it to snap into place?

I dunno, maybe it happens and exists. But it seems to be the exception to the rule as previously mentioned.

I'm not worried about it, especially for $6. Plus, what other options do you have besides peoples' unlocking services? If it's subsidized, the only other alternative I can think of is getting another upgrade early (android phone or something) as an exception, then unlocking it. But even then, that's considerably more of a hassle.

Is there an accurate unlock checker site now? dev.mk i think says all of them are. Is iphoneox.com checking accurate/safe?

You dont need to do restore after it gets unlocked. You can just stick in a T-Mobile sim and it should work. The restore is just to confirm for yourself that its really unlocked.

But for $6 I wouldnt worry about it, since it doesnt look like the majority are getting relocked.

So it's a moral objection? If that's the case I can possibly understand.

I thought we were talking AT&T iPhone 5 unlocks? :p

I worry all the time about getting struck by lightning too.
What are the chances though?
Can I take that risk or never get out of the house again? Maybe...

OP asked a fair question and doesn't deserve to be flamed. There are people in this world who do more than play Angry Birds and watch Gangnam Style on Youtube all day. It's about risk mitigation, namely the risk that your iPhone will be re-locked right when you need it, and also the risk that leaking your IMEI code to some random guy on Ebay could come back to haunt you.

I can picture a perfect-storm scenario where I would be out $10K USD+ if my phone failed me in the absolute worst time in a place where I could not quickly replace it. It is a risk I am willing to take. But once the risk increases to $100K USD, I might reconsider.

Something to consider when you use your phone as more than just a toy.

Nobody is flaming and nobody suggested against taking precautions. I would think if your unlocked phone ran the risk of $100k in case of failure, you'd have a backup either way.

Sure, the user above has a risk of losing $10K or even $100K but needs to buy a subsidized locked iphone in order not to spend $649 on an unlocked one. Makes perfect sense to risk it:D
Maybe also save $6 by having AT&T unlock it in order not to risk loosing $100K:rolleyes:
More and more nonsense in this thread.
Its up to you, you want to waste hours and hours arguing with reps trying to get it unlocked when its clearly against their rules go for it. Nobody is stopping you, good luck.
I rather not and save me the aggrevation and spend $6.
I just had AT&T deny to unlock my old iphone 4 that's been out of contract for over a year and Im now in contract with an iphone 5. They make no sense sometimes. I know if I fight it more I will eventually get it unlocked but I got better things to do with my time. So there goes another $6 to unlock_fuzion:)
