Verizon will not activate a phone unless it was sold as a Verizon phone. It isn't a technology thing it is a corporate policy. So if you want to use Verizon you need a Verizon phone. It can be off contract. You can go into Verizon and buy a full price phone and be off contract. And they will even give you a small discount on your bill. But you can't just use any unlocked phone.

But this is just a policy thing. So Verizon could change it at any time or make an exception for all unlocked phones bought through Apple Store.

That has also been my experience, but the ad copy on the iPhone website says otherwise. Still waiting for confirmation, one way or the other.

AT&T needs to be sued for their automatically locking of any device connected to their network.

I bought my iPhone and paid full price for it, and it's now 'locked' to the AT&T network. Seems incredibly abusive and unnecessary...

Mine isn't. I bought it the same way you did.

All AT&T iPhones not purchased through Apple for full price are locked. And AT&T just won't unlock them because people paid full price. Have to wait 60 days then still meet the eligibility terms for each line. But I've never heard of them being able to lock an unlocked phone just because it's on their network. I'm using a VZW iPhone 6 with AT&T right now and I'd be extremely furious if AT&T somehow managed to get it locked.

I just placed an order about an hour ago for the Sim-Free iphone 6 Plus SG 128 GB, and now it's preparing for shipment (let's see how long this will take). I know the website says 3-5 days.

I'm curious about all of this unlock/locked business.
I bought a Sprint iPhone at full price. Technically my phone shouldn't be locked or tied down to Sprint. I should be able to cancel my service on Sprint and take my phone over to T-Mobile, purchase a new sim, pop it into my Sprint Phone and be able to use T-Mobile's service without having to jailbreak my phone or beg Sprint to unlock it for me. Is this correct?

I just purchased a sim free 6+ 128gb from my local Apple store in Manhattan Beach CA and i am pleased to report that it is the A1524 model...same as sprint with 20 lte bands. This phone can be provisioned with any carrier in the US including sprint/verizon. Apple confirmed this and it is clearly mentioned on their website as well. The iPhone 6 is the A1586. My relative purchased the 6.

Therefore all those who were clamoring for the true globally unlocked iPhone 6/6+, well it is out now. Verizon phones are the next most flexible option.

I was on the iPhone 6 wagon when they first dropped. I had the 6 and 6 plus and then traded it for a Note 4 where I have been for months. I have now placed an order for a sim unlocked 64GB 6 Plus that I am picking up when I get off work. No matter how much I go to Android I always revert back to iOS!

Verizon phones are the next most flexible option, whereas the tmob version is now the most limited model as you cannot switch to Verizon at a later stage, unless you already have a verizon connection and even then it is restricted as you are unable to get the "My Verizon" feature.

I guess I will just have to survive with the 3G speed I get now with my unlocked T-Mobile 6 Plus during trips to China. Then trade up to the 6S Plus when the unlocked Sprint version comes out a year or so from now in order to get LTE service. LTE should be fully deployed in China by then.

The "T-Mobile" iPhone 6 purchased at full price at the Apple store (not on a payment plan from TM) was unlocked. You just had to switch out the SIM card. Don't see what the big deal is about having it SIM free...

This time it's a little different since the SIM-free version has the extra TD-LTE bands that Sprint and some international carriers use, and it is also explicitly whitelisted for Sprint and Verizon, unlike the T-Mobile version.

Unlocking is up to the carrier. I'd like to see one global model of iPhone, and no locking at all, but the carriers don't even have to unlock full price phones. My last two iPhones have been paid in full through Apple. I bought a 5S through AT&T full price and they refused to unlock it. Returned it, bought one through Apple, and now have a VZW iPhone 6.

Yeah. Bought mine full price at Apple. It's unlocked. AT&T cannot go lock it. If you buy it full price FROM AT&T, yeah. It's locked then until you have them unlock it.

I was told that I had to wait until my contract period was up before they would consider unlocking it. And that it was AT&T's policy that all devices placed on a contract are locked to AT&T automatically. BOO on them! I don't have any ability to test that, but I have heard it from multiple sources, including people here.

I would have told them to bugger off and cancel my contract.

So if I stick my nano sim from an already activated Verizon phone, everything should work including VoLTE?

I'm glad for the people who wanted or needed a true world phone. This seems like a much better deal than the previous unlocked iPhones.

I'm looking confirmation for the Sim Free Unlocked iPhone 6 and 6+ are Whitelisted on VZW.

I went to my retailer of choice last weekend just to make sure I could buy a 6 off contract and use it with my current plan and the sales rep assured me I could. I'm with Sprint, have a great plan ATM and have found their 3G service in my area tolerable (don't do anything but check Facebook, email and move photos to/from dropbox for the most part). Am not sure whether their 4G quality would make me think about switching (would keep my 4S around just in case), but I would be interested to know which specific model I get here in the next couple weeks.........

Curious to know what week build these phones will be....

I ordered mine today on apple.com and already shipped today as well and delivers tomorrow. Mine's a build 51. On the name it says iPhone 6 Plus (Global/Sprint), so this is truely a world phone.
