Have you ever used TinyUmbrella on your iPhone 4 in the past
Are you the first owner of the iPhone 4
Was it a replacement iPhone 4

All possibilities

im the first owner, its week 34, it came with 4.0.2, never used tiny umbrella on the i4 before, im going try on my girl friend's i4 this weekend which is week 33, it also came with 4.0.2.

You got lucky. There've been scattered reports of people with phones like yours; the theories I've seen are that someone's entering random ECID's into the system somehow, that you may have gotten a phone that was returned and resold as new, or that Apple employees may be doing stuff like this just for the hell of it. Regardless, you're part of a very tiny minority, congrats!

The same trick didn't work on my husband's phone on the afternoon of the 4.1 release. I tried it when reports started coming out about the proximity sensor getting worse with the upgrade; thought I'd save his blobs just in case he ever wanted to downgrade. No dice, it was already too late by then.

You know waaaay too much on this topic for a girl!!

Well now my iPhone has become pretty much useless as it keeps shutting down and booting to the connect to iTunes screen and then a popup comes up telling me I need to do a restore.

Doing some reading I found people can upgrade their iPhone 4 to 4.1 while retaining their old baseband allowing the phone to remain unlocked but not jailbroken.

Is this something that is possible for my 3GS?

Does anyone have clear instructions on doing this?

No, thats only true on the i4, not 3GS or 3G.

So I was frustrated enough today to restore to 4.1 knowing I would lose the phone function but could use the iPhone as an iPod Touch until a jailbreak is available.

All seemed fine after the initial restore but then it went back to shutting down and booting to the connect to iTunes screen. I did another restore and now during that restore process I get an error in iTunes (error 1603). I followed this article: http://support.apple.com/kb/TA38603?viewlocale=en_US and still get the error on after restore I've done.

I went ahead and requested a box from Apple to send the unit in for a repair as the iPhone is covered until December under the one year warranty.

I have never had a repair from Apple so I am curious about a few things. I understand they send me a box and then I mail it in. But then are they more than likely to repair it or replace it? Does anyone have any experience with this process in Canada? If it is replaced is it usually a refrub? What about the status of it being locked to Rogers (as this phone is when I bought it from eBay) or unlocked until I insert my own SIM card? Finally any idea what the turn around time is?

Sorry for the large number of questions!
