The 2019 iPad Air chassis will probably be rebranded as the new 10th Gen with a 10.5” display and possibly updated CPU. I would be surprised if a flash was added to the rear and stereo speakers in landscape orientation.
the same was rumoured in late 2020/early 2021: iPad 9 to be released in spring, recycling the air 3 chassis ..

what happened was that we saw a (minor) spec bump in the fall of 2021 (a13, center stage and storage)

I will not get too excited - until I see it

I wonder if they're ever come out with and EDU, base model version that comes with a keyboard. My wife just got a job with the school system and gave her an iPhone and a Chromebook.

What was reported were the products imported into India. It could very well be there will be other products that will be shipped to India at a later date. One could easily see a new MacBook Air coming at this event that will be available in India at a slightly later date.
MacBook is no where near launch as of yet, that will have M2 and Apple won’t launch their new chip whilst still rolling out M1. We are looking at the fall at the earliest.

I’m excited for the iPad Air. Do I need to replace my 2019 one? Probably not, it does what I need it to do. But when they announced the new ones in 2020, I was already tempted because of the new design, Apple Pencil 2 compatibility… and the colors.
So if they announce a spec bump in nice colors this year then I might just get one. And if not… we might soon see some nice offers for the 2020 model :)

Changing the entry level IPad so soon? Interesting, must be that lighting port going to USB-C
Yeah, it’s possible Apple doesn’t want the entry level iPad to be left behind, especially if they switch to USB-C with the iPhone 14/14 Pro later this year. They may leave the iPhone SE behind with lightning until they introduce a SE next year that’s similar to the iPhone XR or 11 that gets USB-C. Maybe the 10th Gen iPad gets an upgrade to the A14 too.

That would be nice. I tried to buy the base model 10.2 iPad this past weekend. Sold out across the country in Best Buy + Walmart!

I have a 2nd Gen 12.9" Pro (that I plan to list on MR Marketplace soon) that I was looking to replace with a 11" Pro from 2020. I ended up returning the 11", and I plan to sell my older iPad since I don't find much use in iPads personally. iPadOS doesn't have enough worthwhile to keep me from pulling out my iPhone or using my iMac. For portability, a MacBook can do more in similar price tiers.

Nah.. They're going to keep the Gen 1 pencil for the foreseeable future, and that needs Lightning.

Plus, there are millions of base model iPads across the education sector and a heavy investment in Lightning. Unlikely to shift to USB-C for that reason alone.

Keep in mind, Apple has replaced the flagship iPad within 6 months before. I got burned on the 3rd generation iPad and still have not forgiven Apple.

I also bought the 3rd gen iPad upon release. But I feel Apple made it up to me, as bought two iPad Air 2's in late 2014, and they're still supported with iPadOS 15, and the batteries still work!

They certainly weren’t messing around with the iPad Air 2 that's for sure.

They do have a keyboard that works with the edu iPad.. It's just not included. Plenty of third parties also make keyboards for the iPad. Or do you want something like the old eMate??

I don’t think so. When you’re looking at a Chromebook, you’re not just looking at the price of the hardware, you’re looking at the extremely low price that Google offers the supporting software for. You essentially can have a fleet of Chromebooks but not have to pay to increase the size of your staff to administer. Under those conditions, the only EDU systems investing in iPads are the ones that are also able to invest in the people and software required for administration (and costs more than what Google offers).

If the SE starts at $300 in rupees, then maybe a possible lower starting price like $349 USD which translates to $442 CAD in Canada? Maybe the CAD price could be $479! I would jump ship from Android at that price! I know, I know I am dreaming..... ?

Yup. That was when I stopped saying “well, somebody has to be first and be an early adopter of each version”. Now I let my current devices live their course. (Besides, I already exhausted my options to place hand-me-downs. Trying to remember who got the 3….)

Still keepin‘ my fingers crossed for the 27” iMac at the spring event.
Me too. But I’m also slightly worried that Apple is forced to make all new 2022-2023 slightly or noticeably less impressive due to COVID chip and labor shortages.

Crossing fingers I’m wrong.

If any company has the capital to negate Covid then it’s Apple. It’s just a question if they are willing to spend that extra to keep dominating throughout 22-23.

Look at the wording it says a new entry level iPad…

Now that could mean a few things…

All of these are entry level iPads…

The current entry level iPad
A mini entry level iPad
A mini iPad Pro
11” iPad Pro (is an entry level pro device)

We could even see two iPad Airs, one with the basic LCD panel and one with OLED… who knows at this point, but I do think it’s EXTREMELY unlikely they will refresh what is currently the entry level iPad IMO…
Apple are masters at product segmentation and “selling” customers up and this is only possible when products are markedly and obviously different. And they are notorious for holding off on OLED for their non-“Pro” devices.

For this reason, no new product under the standard 10.2” iPad or iPad Air will get displays that are OLED or better. At least not for the foreseeable future.

OLED and mini-LED displays will remain iPad Pro exclusives until iPads Pro get displays that are an obvious step up from the current pro-motion displays.

iPad Air is already 10.9”. Giving it OLED or mini-LED or really anything that’s markedly better than the current LCD would cannibalize a substantial number of 11” iPad Pro sales.

New, markedly better display on iPads Air happens after iPads Pro upgrade to even better displays.

With a few minor exceptions, Apple’s strategy is always giving flagship models new features first and then letting these features slowly trickle down to lesser models once flagships upgrade to even better parts.

Exactly! Apple is still in the honeymoon phase with the new MacBooks Pro -Putting out any kind of desktop or laptop Mac now with a chip that’s named “M2” will instantly make the new MacBooks Pro look less than new and get too many potential buyers to hold off on buying MBP.

It doesn’t even matter if the upgrade from M1 Pro/Max to M2 isn’t actually that impressive, or if a new, 2022 desktop Mac blows out the M1 Max/Pro MBPs out of the water in terms of performance -Apple will see an instant decline in all M1 product sales once they put out any M2 product just because of the name of the chip.

The average Apple buyer cannot differentiate between what’s desktop or mobile processors, nor what benchmarks and real world tests actually show.

But they understand branding and sequential numbers.

And that’s why M2 is not going in any new products until late 2022 or later.
