All I want is for that cheesy fake chrome border to go the way of the dodo. it has zero appeal in 2009.

It acts as an antenna so it actually has a purpose.

I think the new iPhone will be pretty similar in design to the last, maybe a bit more refined here and there but nothing groundbreaking. Its the tech on the inside is what I'm interested in.

Its obvious that its going to be a good looking phone, I don't understand why people are moaning "omg tiss all plstic on the outsid, thiz wil suc so bad" when what really matters is what it can do on the inside.

As much as I am excited for all the new stuff that "might" be on the inside of the new iPhone. I am certain the outside will at least change a little.

MANY people are vain and want people to know they have the latest and greatest. Changing up the back of the phone or maybe even the chrome strip on the front will cause some people to do what ever they can to get their hands on the new phone.

It is a nerdy detail rumor, but it is nice to know the nerdy details.

Or they've learned their lessen...
This might be just a placeholder icon.

Yeh, because the next gen iPhone will obviously be shaped hexagonal or rhomboid.

With such small icons, all iPhones for the next decade will look the same.

I reckon its a placeholder, as the difference between the original and 3g iPhones are clearly visible (one has the coloured plastic back, the other has the metal and black back) I reckon we will see very little difference in the new iPhone, however we will see some...

So there is no icon for 3,1 I guess?
Does this mean 3,1 is not going to come out until next year
or is it the case of sell as much 2,1 as they can and then release new version
later in the year?

I hope it's not the later..... although I kind of doubt they will

1st Gen iPhone was 1,1.. 2nd Gen iPhone, or the current iPhone 3G, is 1,2. The new one coming out next month is 2,1.

Surely this means nothing. Either it is the new iPhone (with few if any design changes) or they simply haven't designed the icon yet and have used the iPhone 3G one as a placeholder.

Let's move on. This should be page 2!

Has anyone ever considered it might be exactly the same but with a new, larger firmware as the only change? Just trying to peer outside all the cloudy smoke in here... :p

Well I think it was obvious the front would remain the same. I just want to hear more about the back! Hopefully some pictures of the casing will be leaked.

I know that next one should be 2,1 but few weeks ago other codenames were found on the 3.0 beta firmware along with iProd, iPod 2,2 and iFPGA or sth like that.

When you zoom into the 1,1 iPhone it looks like the edge one. Then again that could be obvious... idk

that doesnt make any sense .. why would apple be like oh hey here is a new iphone but its the exact same iphone but with different firmware..

everyone go sell your 3g for a new 3g that is exactly the same...

and i am quoting you cause you said EXACTLY the same

No Changes!! Please!!

I for one hope the outside stays the same, and it's the guts that change. I'd love to see all those rumored specs (600Mhz proc, double ram, video-capable 3.2 Mp camera, 32Gb, etc...) crammed into the same shell.

Then, all my current stuff (cases, bike mount, mophie juicepack air, etc...) will not be wasted!
:D

I think the dimensions will be the same, but the materials could be different, and obviously they'll be that new camera as well.

Haven't heard of this one though? What's it for? When is Apple suppose to release it? Got pics?! ;)

I'm leaning towards the 'placeholder' side of the argument right now.

How do you all know it's plastic from the pics is what I wanna know?

I don't want it to be plastic but if it still is then oh well, I'll be slappin' a case on it anyways. ;)

i'm pretty sure one of the reasons they ditched aluminum for the phone was because aluminum is not the greatest material for wireless signals.

i don't think we'll be seeing an aluminum iphone again.

i do wonder about the carbon fiber rumors that came out some months back. carbon fiber is super sturdy, and could definitely improve the quality and build of the iphone.

Come on, I know rumours are thin on the ground but sorry Macrumours but this should not be a lead story!

I think apple learnt from their mistake and have not decided to put in a mini picture of their new model.

Give them some credit, please.

I suppose its a little more interesting than that story about a server farm, yawn.

News MUST be thin on the ground.

The fact that we know that iPhone 3,1 is close enough in the pipeline to be named in firmware makes me worry about buying 2,1 this summer. Hopefully we'll see multiple models announced, or something.

Case

Perhaps the new case is the same size but made of a different material, say zirconium? Lightweight, practically indestructible, actually a metal.

Couldn't agree more:D

In some ways keeping the size the same would be great for existing cases. Same for the exisiting docks.

That is exactly my concern:(
