apple can't win either way.

if they leave the design the same, people will complain that they're stuck in the past. if they update the design, people will bitch and whine to no end about how it's not as good as the old design. (ipod shuffle)

New models and revisions of products are often just a reduction in the cost of manufacture, irrelevant of the 'new feature list'.
They 'can win' if they carry on doing what they're doing. They'd do even better if they spent less time with their ridiculous marketing and more on the phones OS.

I'd like a few changes to the currrent design, first: a metall back or at least make the plastic one matte, second: make it smaller, same screen size but have less space around it.

Otherwise I'm pretty okay with the current design

I don't get why people want Apple to go back to the aluminum back. It wasn't good for reception and sure, it looked good for the 2/3rds of the back that it covered, but the need for 1/3rd to be black plastic completely ruined the look. The iPhone 3G is a much better design, at least aesthetically. I strongly doubt we will see an aluminum back on the next iPhone.

i get great reception no matter where i am

Most people would say that the iPhone 3G was "the minor update" and that the next iPhone in at least specs will be the major update.

What happens next year when a lot of 3G contracts are up? I do not think we will see any big changes next month to the 3G. It just makes more sense to do an overhaul with the LTE network and when 3G contracts begin ending. There are more 3Gs currently being used than 2G right?

So...

1,1 = 1st gen iphone
1,2 = iphone 3G
2,1 = new iphone?
2,1white = new iphone...again??

Iphone 3G comes in two colors, but only has one profile, I guess since the hardware is the same for black and white. Could this be a tip-off that the new iphone will come in different colors...and feature set options??

Apple will do a worthy update every year. They'll want new customers to buy the iPhone and they'll want current 3G owners to upgrade.

I think they'll change the design just enough so that people can see if you have a new iPhone; Apple will want to make the current 3G look old hat, and so that people who buy the new one can show that they have the latest and greatest.

yes there are probably threefold more more iphone 3g than iphone 2g

I bet this is what will happen:
-better camera
-enhanced battery
-possibly faster processor

I think they will save the bigger update for when the threefold more 3G users (thanks for the person that said this) are able to upgrade. It just makes more sense to capture the bigger audience of 3G users than the 2G users.

Or is my logic flawed?

I have to agree on that, it seems there are a lot of people who now have a 3G that just don't want there to be a major update now but in a year when there subscr ends, lol.

I was onboard with the 1ste one and was very happy when the 3G came out because there was no reason for me to get it at all compared to the original one.

Now with the rumored increase in memory and computing power i feel compelled to do so even do i'm still very happy with my 1st gen iPhone.

That being said if the computing power does not go up i will stay with my 1st gen iPhone and wait another year ;-).

I could say the reverse. There are a lot of 2G users who skipped the 3G that now what something big to happen in order to justify getting one. It just makes more sense for Apple to wait and bring big changes next year when ATT has more plans for their LTE network and when the majority of current iPhone user's are up for a new 2 year agreement. It would make more sense for Apple to keep all of those people than the much fewer 2G users.

Of course, Apple will announce some minor enhancements in a few weeks, but I highly doubt there will be anything revolutionary.

I think your partly right, but Apple wants to bring in new iPhone customers from other phones, and to do that, the next iPhone will be a large step up from the current 3G, at least in the eyes of the average consumer (although not necessarily to many people here).

If it weren't for the need of 3G to do MMS, I would completely agree with you

The iPhone 3G is just the second gen iPhone. In fact I would expect the next iPhone to be called just iPhone.

if they do redesign I hope they bring back the fact that the iPhone 2G has hardly any bezel around the screen, the 3G does.

They won't be able to. I got my iphone on the very first day that they were available and I'm tied to this contract until January 2010. Anyone that waited will have to wait longer.

To upgrade would cost me the buyout on the existing contract - at least 6 months at £30/month (£180), plus the new phone (~£200 if they keep the same pricing), plus signing a new contract for *another* 18 months. The new iphone would have to be so good it gave free blowjobs to lay out that kind of cash.

The 2G was different.. it wasn't subsidised so they could cut the contracts early. They can't do that with the 3G as it's part of the payment plan for the phone itself (plus mobile phone companies aren't remotely interested in existing customers anyway.. their entire sales model relies on getting new ones.. that's why it's much cheaper to switch companies every year rather than stay with the same one).

I'm hoping apple decide to give up on this carrier centric lockin model and go sim free.. would be nice, but probably not likely.

White iPhone 3G? I've still got my first gen iPhone and I will upgrade, but only of the new one goes back to a metal case. I much prefer it over the 3G looks-wise.

I concur. I don't care if the new iPhone will walk my dog, plastic back means no purchase from me.

My first gen phone is in perfect condition (recently exchanged for a pristine refurb), and I have lived without MMS for a year, so no real urgency to upgrade on my part upgrade. I certainly hope this is not the case, pun intended, and this rumor is false.

But ATT has said it's LTE network won't be up and running until 2011. (See: http://www.electronista.com/articles/09/02/17/att.on.4g.rollout/). I doubt Apple is going to sit out two full product cycles before coming out with another gangbuster iPhone. That would make for one stale iPhone by 2011; kind of like how the Palm Treo 750 is today.

There are plenty of major improvements Apple can make to the non-phone side of the the iPhone. The improvement may only be evolutionary but much needed and will get 2G owners jazzed about trading up and well as siphoning off would-be Pre owners.

They switched to plastic because it's better with reception. I doubt they are going to go back to aluminum unless they can find a way to get better reception.

Agreed...Apple can't update its phone only when AT&T network is ready. They could put 3.5 standard in(I don't think it is yet), and LTE even if AT&T is only taking off with there netwrork when Apple puts it in. There is whole world of people apple needs to sell the iPhone to. Not to mentions storage, screen resolution, battery life, thickness, brightness are always convincing things to get people to buy new devices.

This could be accurate. Apple might just be waiting for the 4G networks to have some major iPhone design changes. It might just be OS 3.0, built-in compass, and and 32GB SSD for this year.

The truth behind the iPhone2,1 icon issue

This is typical. They've done this before.

It allows developers to reference the icon in their code and Apple can update the actual image with a software update once the new icon is released, which would most probably be after it's announced.

They've though this one through. They know that people who will need that file to exist so that a dead image doesn't show up in their code will understand that it's a temporary 'placeholder'.

This is my personal opinion. I believe it to be true as proven historically.
