Supposedly if you are a dev (or pirate) and acquire 4.2b3 IPSW and use redsn0w 0.9.7 b6 (just released), you can have an untethered 4.2.1 jailbreak.

I haven't tested it myself because I am sticking with 4.1 limera1n.

And it's still in beta form, but it might be worth trying for those who are impatient. Mac users only at the moment. No windows version.

Where are you getting this information from? Last time the "BAckup" plan only use the 4.2b3 SHSHs no the IPSW.

Yeah but its in beta form so maybe they wouldnt announce it all the time.

Also, is redsn0w a part of the dev team or its own thing like geohot?

LOL this answer all my questions....

RedSn0w is a Dev team tool.

There is a Beta of RedSnow that allow you to do untethered 4.2.1 JB, this required your 4.2b3 SHSHs saved and the 4.2b3 IPSW, this is call the "backup" since Comex is working on getting a untethered JB without the need for those Beta Shshs.

Note that this JB break the Buetooth functionality* (I stand corrected, as TwoSocEmBoppers mentioned the Bluetooth should be fix as beta 5 and Skype was fix as Beta6)

Here is a How to for the Mac.

Does this still maintain the baseband version? I'm unlocked on 01.59.00, and would really prefer not to lose this on my iPhone 4 4.1 when I upgrade to 4.2.1 untethered.

Why am I upgrading? Because the proximity sensor issue in 4.1 for me is driving me CRAZY.

Once I get clarification/confirmation that the baseband will not get updated when I restore to 4.2.1 CFW untethered, I'll do it... thanks guys.

You will have to wait for pwnage to be updated cause if you go up to official 4.2.1 you will also upgrade the baseband.
Also about the Proximity issue it hasnt been resolved with 4.1 or 4.2.1 either.
I suggest you install Calllock from cydia. Seems like a good workaround, I been using it for some time now and it works great.

Not sure what you're talking about with the proximity sensor not being fixed/addressed in 4.1.

My wife's and my iPhone 4 worked perfectly at 4.0 and 4.0.1. Then 4.1 came out and ruined our proximity sensors while fixing SOME people's sensors. Now 4.2.1 has come out and has again - tweaked the proximity sensor for some people. I'm hoping it fixes mine - like how it worked at launch.

Anyway, here's the thread on Apple where this is stated:

http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2551039&start=0&tstart=0

Again, 4.2.1 doesn't fix it for some people, but does for others, just like 4.1 did. So we'll see, I suppose!

Also, my question is about redsn0w, not the official 4.2.1. I want to know if upgrading to 4.2.1 via redsn0w will upgrade my baseband firmware.

I see.
See mine has been sucky with 4.0 and all the way thru 4.2.1
It has improved some with 4.1 but still annoys the crap out of me:D
CallLock has fixed the issue even though its just a workaround that locks the screen while you're on a call. At least I dont hang up and mute people any more.

About redsnow its just a JB tool. It does not update your iphone or maintain your baseband version.
It just jailbreaks your iphone that has official 4.2.1 installed already thru itunes.

OK, so I think I need to go read up some more...

I'm thoroughly confused. :(

Read up some more on what?:confused:
Maybe you need to learn some basic things about what redsnow is and does and how it works.
Pwnage tool and redsnow are different JB tools that accomplish different things.

I corrected my post above. I meant me, not you. Was distracted. :D

There really are. The only reason I upgraded to 4.1 in the first place was to fix the stupid Bluetooth problem where everyone said I sound like I'm under water. And by doing that, it ruined my proximity sensor.

Without doubt, the iPhone 4 is the worst PHONE I've ever owned, and I've owned a cell phone since 1995 (Motorola DPC650, I think!).

Well, I have to now go figure out if it's even possible to unlocked on 4.2.1...

So to confirm, this is the most stable JB yet for iPhone 4 4.2.1?

Also, I will be untethered, have bluetooth and skype working but will have an upgraded baseband going from 4.1 on an iPhone 4? Is this all correct?

I don't need the unlock so this beta might finally be worth it to me.

You have 4.2.1beta3 SHSH's on file right?

I've had an untethered 4.2.1 jailbroken iphone 4 since beta 4, don't why you think this is news now.

Is it possible to use redsn0w without upgrading the baseband?

No.

Redsn0w REQUIRES you to already be on the firmware you intend to jailbreak. It has ALWAYS been like this.

PwnageTool is the program that does what you want, it (for whatever crazy reason) has yet to be updated to work with 4.2.1.
