Apple is rumored to be working on a refreshed version of the 13-inch MacBook Pro following the launch of the new 16-inch MacBook Pro in October, and the new 13-inch machines could adopt Intel's 10th-generation Ice Lake chips.

Over the weekend, a Twitter leaker shared a 3D Mark Time Spy benchmark of a machine said to be an upcoming 13-inch MacBook Pro equipped with Intel's 10th-generation i7-1068NG7 Ice Lake 2.3GHz chip with 4.1GHz turbo boost capabilities (via Wccftech).

The benchmarks compare the new 10th-generation chip to the 8th-generation 2.4GHz Core i5 chip in the high-end 13-inch MacBook Pro from 2019 and suggest the new 13-inch machine Pro will be approximately 12 percent faster than the current 13-inch MacBook Pro when it comes to CPU speeds, and close to 30 percent faster when it comes to GPU performance.

If Apple does release a 13-inch MacBook Pro with the aforementioned Ice Lake chip, it will be the first Apple notebook equipped with a 10th-generation chip. Though not included in the leak, a 16-inch MacBook Pro refresh in 2020 could also feature 10th-generation chips, though 16-inch machines are expected to use Comet Lake chips built on the 14++nm architecture as there are no 10-nanometer Ice Lake chips appropriate for them.

Rumors suggest Apple will release an updated 13-inch MacBook Pro in the first half of 2020, perhaps at its March event, though WWDC is also a possibility. Along with 10th-generation Intel chips, the new machines are expected to feature the improved scissor keyboard that was first introduced in the 16-inch MacBook Pro, along with the option to upgrade to 32GB RAM.

I currently have a 2017 15" MBP with a quad-core i7 and 16 GB RAM. Naturally I've been eyeing the new 16" but I'm wondering if I should just wait to see what Apple does with the 13"/14" first. Because if I can get a quad-core processor and twice the amount of RAM as my current machine, but in a smaller and lighter package, then this might be a better choice.

Ugh but 64 gigs of RAM in the 16" is super appealing. I'm of the opinion that you can never have too much RAM, especially for the kind of intensive workflows and applications I tend to run. So I'm also wondering if I should just wait for that to be refreshed this year with 10th-gen processors.

Have to love the MacRumors headlines: 13-Inch MacBook Pro Models to Use Intel's 10th-Generation Ice Lake Chips

Followed by the actual article: the new 13-inch machines could adopt Intel's 10th-generation Ice Lake chips.

"to use" or "could adopt;" all the same, right?

Lol
I thought that's what you were supposed to do? Offer the declaration of the premise in the headline first, and then in the article explain what could or could not potentially happen regarding it.

I'm not a journalist tho lol. That's just what I've noticed in many news articles over the years. It's always been my understanding that journalists are trained to come up with the most eye-catching headline more than anything else.

Excellent! At least compared to my current system.
-Integrated 802.11ax
-AVX-512 (for those of use that will use it anyway)
-18% IPC increase
-Full 10bit HVEC encode/decode
-LPDDR4X
-Variable Refresh Rate support

Just an all round solid chip, glad to see 802.11ax support which is sorely lacking in the 16". I wonder if this means they'll be a 2020 update for the 16".

For those interested looks like the chip is the 1068G7.

Well, this is a "rumour" site after all, not only news So with that in mind, the headline and article both fit. The headline suggests that Apple is "rumoured to use"... and then the article clarifies that with the use of "could". But you're right.... clickbait headline for sure. ;)

The current 13" MBP lineup is split into two: the low-end models use the 15W Intel processors and the high-end models use the 28W Intel processors with the beefier GPU. If Apple follows the same pattern, the Ice Lake processor mentioned in this article will go into the high-end 13" MBP model and the low-end models will get the 15W Comet Lake processors mentioned in this tweet.

Of course, my 16" MBP came today, just before I read this rumor. I'd love to have the guts of the 16" in the 13" size. But I guess I'll just keep the 64 gb ram and 4 tb ssd in the 16.

Glad I've held off my purchase for a new Mac. If Apple place the 10th gen processors and adopt the same keyboard the 16-inch has, consider me a buyer. with 1TB of space of course.

I’m in search of a new portable device , I wanted to get the Air model but it’s too outdated and expensive. Then I saw SurfaceBook 7 Pro ... I mean WoW ! A perfect touch screen and much more powerful than the current Air and Pro 13 models.

Interesting. I do wonder what they're going to do with their road-maps this year.
Or when (if!) new products are actually going to ship.

With all their contacts in China (I mean, Tim Cook is probably one of the few non-politicians in the West who can get through to Xi without being given the run-around for an hour), Apple's BoD probably knows a lot more about the situation than most other people. Which might also be why they were the first to cancel their guidance.

Great that it will get the updated chips and hopefully a 32gb option, but disappointing it doesn't seem to be getting the 15-16" thinner bezel treatment. Still kinda hoping it does, but they weren't able to make it 14" so are staying with the 13" name even it it is say 13.85" now.
