"iPhone Xs Plus" is a mouthful and difficult to say, but "iPhone Xs Max" is easier to pronounce.
What the heck does this even mean?
Plus
Max
In what native language is one harder to say than the other?

Seriously, the naming scheme has really gone crazy if this is true. It could have been so simple.
Done. Super simple and nicely mirrors the iPad line with both an entry level and a “Pro” level that comes in multiple screen sizes.

I miss when the naming scheme was more simpleApple's product line is getting as convoluted as HP's. (Slight exaggeration).

Who ever came up with the marketing idea of calling a product XS as in excess or excessive should be fired! My wife already thinks what I'm paying for these damn phones and products is crazy, come on Apple get some creativity !!!!
Yeah I had it in my head that the model year would be included like they do for iPads and Macs. But it didn’t make it to the page for some reason!Just do like cars and use the year of release.

Hey there’s an idea. “iPhone X-Treme”. They might as well go full 90s.Gee, I hope they don't call it that.
Too 1990s X-Treme for my tastes.
You hint is correct. I have owned an X since launch day. I am amazed how many people call it an "X".I'm sure it's premised on Apple pretending that people will actually call it "the ten s" (hint: they won't)
