Hmm, makes me wonder about Burner, the app that you can use to purchase term-limited phone numbers.
For the ones smart enough to have deleted their Facebook accounts years ago, nothing at all! What does it mean for users?
And when I tell people that Facebook are listening to your real life conversations they laugh at me...
When I go to settings and select the (google) voice app, I don’t see a toggle for microphone access or denial. That tells me that the app does not use the mic in a similar way to how Facebook messenger does. I think google voice basically does something different— essentially using the app to direct a call via your regular stock Apple phone app. So no mic access is necessary. If I’m wrong, feel free to correct me.
Well I’m certainly not going to take their word for it.
As far as I’m concerned, Facebook’s main function is to collect and sell data.
Did Apple catch these apps doing something, or are they just closing a loophole in the code? Either way it seems like a welcome update.
You like Apple because they make it difficult for third-party apps to compete on an even playing field? There are other chat apps that aren’t owned by Facebook, you know. I can tell you if you were living in Germany you would not only be using WhatsApp but you might even have iMessage disabled. That‘s one reason why I like Apple![]()
WhatsApp is a major loss but FB Messenger not really. Overseas there are people who will solely make calls via WhatsApp. Just get a Data Plan and WhatsApp.WhatsApp is essential to anyone who has friends or family overseas, especially if one party is in a developing country. I would imagine that losing WhatsApp would force 100Ks of users to switch to Android. I don't use Facebook Messenger very much, but some people occasionally use it to contact me, and it would certainly be a disruption and inconvenience to them.
It is an even playing field. Apple owns the field and is allowing others to play in it. It didn't receive Gov't funding to build its ecosystem. Its users are paying to use its ecosystem. This is not a unique system just look at Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, and all of the US Cellular Service Providers. You like Apple because they make it difficult for third-party apps to compete on an even playing field? They've already been in the sh*thouse, with Apple, for the crap they were distributing outside of the App Store using a Company App Account, even if they distributed outside the App Store.

Can’t recommend signal enough as a replacement for WhatsApp. If you can convince people to swap, you’ll never go back.
Dude, I totally forgot about that. I now remember being pissed about it. What a time. It’s about flipping time! Remember when Apple first “baked in” the Facebook login into the iOS?
The only reason I use WhatsApp is for 20-person group chats I got invited to, so uh...Can’t recommend signal enough as a replacement for WhatsApp. If you can convince people to swap, you’ll never go back.
Sure it was a mistake, but at least their in a concerted direction toward user privacy now.
Yes this may create compromised experiences for some existing users. Yes Apple may lose users that switch to Android. I’m certain these are all calculated risks for the sake of making the “Apple Brand” all about privacy... for now at least.
Sadly, not everyone lives on this side of the world or use iPhone only. You can go ahead stay on the high horse and try to convince MY pals to switch out of that crap while telling me how to live my life.my point that your "givie mark the middle finger" and "failbook" is all talk. doesn't matter when you BOUGHT whatsapp before it was free - if it's such a security breach for you, what are you still doing using it?!
Hope so, we don’t need Google harvesting our data
Just waiting for the Apple sign in and I can ditch FB forever. WhatsApp is still a tough one to get rid of as it's often the only free and easy way to send pics to people on Android, so it's reassuring to know it'll be harder for them to listen in.

What happened to "Whatsup is end-to-end encryption" ?
