Great news! Hopefully Apple continue to undo some of these historical shady allowances they have with the Silicon Valley giants in the name of privacy.

And when I tell people that Facebook are listening to your real life conversations they laugh at me...

And they will still laugh at you. Nothing about this article implies Facebook is listening in. Actually, nothing in this article actually says Facebook is using the run in the background feature of this API to collect anything at all.

When I go to settings and select the (google) voice app, I don’t see a toggle for microphone access or denial. That tells me that the app does not use the mic in a similar way to how Facebook messenger does. I think google voice basically does something different— essentially using the app to direct a call via your regular stock Apple phone app. So no mic access is necessary. If I’m wrong, feel free to correct me.

Good to know, I also hope it doesn't mess up GV.

Well I’m certainly not going to take their word for it.

As far as I’m concerned, Facebook’s main function is to collect and sell data.

Yeah, for Facebook's Pushkit api, Collecting & selling data is probably just a collateral "side effect" of their app.....

Did Apple catch these apps doing something, or are they just closing a loophole in the code? Either way it seems like a welcome update.

Probably Apple just doesn't want to share it's client list (Apple users..i.e.buyers of stuff) with Facebook and Google anymore.

That‘s one reason why I like Apple :)
You like Apple because they make it difficult for third-party apps to compete on an even playing field? There are other chat apps that aren’t owned by Facebook, you know. I can tell you if you were living in Germany you would not only be using WhatsApp but you might even have iMessage disabled.

WhatsApp is essential to anyone who has friends or family overseas, especially if one party is in a developing country. I would imagine that losing WhatsApp would force 100Ks of users to switch to Android. I don't use Facebook Messenger very much, but some people occasionally use it to contact me, and it would certainly be a disruption and inconvenience to them.
WhatsApp is a major loss but FB Messenger not really. Overseas there are people who will solely make calls via WhatsApp. Just get a Data Plan and WhatsApp.

It is an even playing field. Apple owns the field and is allowing others to play in it. It didn't receive Gov't funding to build its ecosystem. Its users are paying to use its ecosystem. This is not a unique system just look at Sony, Microsoft, Nintendo, and all of the US Cellular Service Providers.

Yeah. It's the same here in Argentina and most of Latin America. It sucks because I despise FB, but I have to have installed otherwise I'd be in the dark. Funny thing is, 95% of people are not aware that WhatsApp is owned by FB.

Why you might have iMessage disabled?

Ahh..traveling internationally soon. This could be incredibly inconvenient.

edit: np, should be fine until 2020

Can’t recommend signal enough as a replacement for WhatsApp. If you can convince people to swap, you’ll never go back.

My only issue with Signal is I can’t for the life of me figure out how to migrate chat history from one phone to another when I upgrade. Is this possible?

"To be clear--we are using the PushKit VoIP API to deliver a world-class, private messaging experience, not for the purpose of collecting data."

But like, maybe we collect some data on the side...

Give me a break. Absolutely NOTHING Facebook says in public should be taken as truth, when time and time again, they lie. They and others need to be regulated ASAP.

It’s about flipping time! Remember when Apple first “baked in” the Facebook login into the iOS?
Dude, I totally forgot about that. I now remember being pissed about it. What a time.

The only reason I use WhatsApp is for 20-person group chats I got invited to, so uh...
For the smaller family/friends SMS group chats, we've all been kicking out Android users so we can use iMessage.

Sure it was a mistake, but at least their in a concerted direction toward user privacy now.

Yes this may create compromised experiences for some existing users. Yes Apple may lose users that switch to Android. I’m certain these are all calculated risks for the sake of making the “Apple Brand” all about privacy... for now at least.

Yeah Apple got caught with their pants down allowing third parties to listen to people having sex through Siri.

Spare us the holier than thou :)

my point that your "givie mark the middle finger" and "failbook" is all talk. doesn't matter when you BOUGHT whatsapp before it was free - if it's such a security breach for you, what are you still doing using it?!
Sadly, not everyone lives on this side of the world or use iPhone only. You can go ahead stay on the high horse and try to convince MY pals to switch out of that crap while telling me how to live my life.

Seriously, why would Facebook's messaging apps need to collect data while they're in the background?

(From the user's point of view, I mean - I totally get why Facebook wants to collect data whenever it can, from its own point of view)

Hope so, we don’t need Google harvesting our data

Google's data collection is on a completely different level, technology-wise. They don't need to resort to clumbsy trickery like Facebook does.

Just waiting for the Apple sign in and I can ditch FB forever. WhatsApp is still a tough one to get rid of as it's often the only free and easy way to send pics to people on Android, so it's reassuring to know it'll be harder for them to listen in.

Hmmm, there's also Telegram and Viber and I am sure some other messaging apps...

That's true - with Whatsapp's new AI-supported pre-screening for messages, they have found a way to analyze data from messages before they're encrypted. Which means that both Facebook and law enforcement will have full access to message content, even though it's sent encrypted afterwards. The same goes for phone calls. Apple is simply trying to avoid that. So: hats off for Apple. There's a reason why I'm sticking with Apple products, although they're insanely expensive.

What happened to "Whatsup is end-to-end encryption" ?

It still is - but Facebook has found a way to get all your data while still sending stuff end-to-end encrypted. They're running AI in your WhatsApp and messenger clients to pre-analyze all messages before they're sent.

This. While in reality I'm sure it doesn't happen (but I still think it does - them and Google) I have on more than one occasion had the strangest conversations about things then something has suddenly popped up in my news feed etc. The strangest one was a conversation about getting a goat to keep the weeds down and then in my news feed appears a video about the National Trust using goats on the Isle of Wight to manage the land and keep the weeds down. Kinda freaky.

Well, our very specific app that requires to be woken up to do a sync on request by a manager will be Android only then.

It will make our customer to buy tens of thousands of android tablets just because of Apple who doesn't want us to distribute the app outside the appstore and not allowing us to do very specific pro features. It just cost Apple 50 millions. I do understand the idea, but I don't understand why Apple is more and more preventing the development of very specific professional apps... They could allow us to distribute it directly to our customers (companies) or having a special validation for such apps that have special requirements.
