The 12.9 inch one? I don’t think I’ve ever seen in held in portrait.I agree. In this thread you’ll get the “I aLWayS UsE iT In LaNDscaPe.” In my classes, work, and art groups I only ever see it in portrait mode. And if video calls need to be made, we’re grabbing our, lighter and more compact, phones to do the job.
I rarely use my iPad Pro in portrait mode. It doesn’t usually comes off Magic Keyboard.I can’t say I’ve met anyone who regularly uses an ipad in landscape mode. ive always thought of them as primarily portrait devices with the ability to switch to landscape for watching videos slightly larger.
Assuming they could fit it in, the only reason not to do that is that it would then most likely cost (even) more.Rather than move it, they should add another on the long edge therefore allowing users the choice. I’m sure it can be technically achieved. I don’t use the Apple Pencil much but would mind if it was offset to charge.
Two different user paradigms: a) touch screen, and b) keyboard + pointing device.I know the arguments for it's two different devices, but I really think it is time.
Mine is always in landscape mode, screen rotation locked and all. Switched a couple of years back, took a little to get used but now I think the iPad is better to use.I can’t say I’ve met anyone who regularly uses an ipad in landscape mode. ive always thought of them as primarily portrait devices with the ability to switch to landscape for watching videos slightly larger.
You don't have to use touch all the time. My iPad is almost never out of the keyboard case and I have a mouse connected for some uses. it only goes "commando" for things like sketching. It would be the same if Mac OS were running on it.Two different user paradigms: a) touch screen, and b) keyboard + pointing device.
While it is certainly possible to implement macOS on an iPad, users will constantly be faced with curious issues like a program asking one to "right click" for so-and-so option, or to press the command key while selecting something in a menu.
That's just awkward on a touch screen.
Then prepare to be annoyed.I will be so annoyed if the refreshed Pro's get the camera move and the new Air's don't.
Apple's upcoming iPad Pro is likely to include a landscape Face ID camera, according to code in iOS 17.4 discovered by MacRumors contributor Steve Moser.

"During Face ID setup, iPad needs to be in landscape with the camera at the top of the screen," reads the code.
With the 10th-generation iPad, Apple relocated the front-facing camera to the side of the device so that it would be usable in landscape mode rather than portrait mode, and it appears that Apple is making this change with future iPads as well.
The iPad Pro is the only iPad model that has Face ID at the current time, so the code suggests that Apple is relocating the front-facing camera from the top of the device to the side. Apple could, however, be adding Face ID to the iPad Air, so it is also possible that this change applies to that device.
Apple has long positioned the iPad Pro as an alternative to the Mac, and as a Mac replacement, it is often used in a horizontal orientation rather than a vertical orientation, so relocating the camera makes sense.
Rumors suggest that Apple will introduce new iPad Air and iPad Pro models as soon as April.

I can see why people like the webcam on the portrait side. However, since covid, it feels strange to use zoom, teams, meet, FaceTime with the webcam on the side when in landscape. I think it's a great move to move the webcam to landscape view.

Yes. It’s the right move if you have the 11” iPad Pro in sight. I have the 12.9” only because it has much superior display technology with Mini-LED. I will happily switch to the 11” iPad Pro if it has OLED, Mini LED or Micro LED - can’t wait for time to give us MicroLED panels. OLED is great, too. The miniLED in the iPad Pro 12.9” is great but it’s just too big to use for travel and as a reading device.Fingers crossed🤞🏼. I sold my iPad Pro hoping for this, OLED en the M3😊
Strange. In my field there are tons of people toting around iPad pros attached to Magic Keyboards — basically always in landscape. I can’t think of the last time I saw someone using an iPad in portrait orientation. Guess that’s why it’s nice that it works whichever way you prefer.I can’t say I’ve met anyone who regularly uses an ipad in landscape mode. ive always thought of them as primarily portrait devices with the ability to switch to landscape for watching videos slightly larger.
This is not directly about FaceID. It’s mainly about the webcam. The rumored change it to put the front-facing camera on the long edge at the top so that it works better in Zoom/Webex calls. People with the “pro” iPads are more likely to have their iPad in keyboard cases that hold the iPad in landscape mode. With the webcam on the side, you always look like you are distractedly staring to the side in video conference calls. The cam on the side also results on tons of cases where FaceID is blocked by your hand. It’s a natural place to put your hand and do scrolling but FaceID is blocked.I’m confused. My iPad Pro can unlock via Face ID while holding it in landscape position. Am I missing something? 🧐
I bet you anything that’s exactly what’ll happen.I will be so annoyed if the refreshed Pro's get the camera move and the new Air's don't.
